Possible role of sweating in the pathophysiology of panic attacks.

In recent years the role of hyperventilation in the generation of panic attacks has attracted a considerable amount of interest. According to these studies hyperventilation can elicit the somatic symptoms of panic due to systemic alkalosis. We suggest that since in the case of panic, sweating might cause alkalosis, it could also contribute to the generation of panic attacks. In light of this hypothesis we made a statistical analysis of the panic symptoms of 111 panic patients diagnosed according to DSM-III criteria. The analysis revealed that: (1) there was a well identified group of panic pat

Mechanisms of physiological gustatory sweating and flushing in the face.

Mechanisms of physiological gustatory sweating and flushing were investigated in 21 patients with a facial nerve lesion compromising parasympathetic outflow to the lacrimal gland, and in 13 patients undergoing diagnostic blockade of the stellate ganglion. Vascular responses and electrodermal activity (which reflects sweating) were monitored on each side of the forehead before and during gustatory stimulation with chillies or Tabasco sauce (derived from chillies). Vascular responses in the cheeks were also monitored in 14 patients with a facial nerve lesion. Sympathetic blockade increased gusta

A wearable nanofluidic sensor for determining the sweat nicotine.

The escalating prevalence of electronic cigarettes has intensified public health discourse regarding the implications of nicotine exposure. Consequently, the development of rigorous, non-invasive diagnostic methodologies to evaluate secondhand smoke exposure is imperative. Precise quantification of nicotine levels provides a critical evidence base for designing interventions aimed at smoking cessation and the prophylaxis of smoking-related pathologies. In this study, we introduce a novel biosensing paradigm that leverages the I-V characteristics of asymmetric nanochannel arrays, synergized wit

Wearable sweat chloride sensors: materials, fabrication and their applications.

Chloride is a crucial anion required for multiple functions in the human body including maintaining acid-base balance, fluid balance, electrical neutrality and supporting muscles and nerve cells. Low-chloride levels can cause nausea, diarrhoea, etc. Chloride levels are measured in different body fluids such as urine, serum, sweat and saliva. Sweat chloride measurements are used for multiple applications including disease diagnosis, sports monitoring, and geriatric care. For instance, a sweat chloride test is performed for cystic fibrosis screening. Further, sweat also offers continuous non-inv

Cyclophosphamide exposure via sweat of patients receiving CHOP therapy.

INTRODUCTION: "Secondary exposure to anticancer drugs" refers to exposure to anticancer drugs after chemotherapy via the patient's urine and other excretions. The necessity of countermeasures against secondary exposure to anticancer drugs has been recently highlighted. Although anticancer drugs are also excreted through sweat, few studies have reported exposure to drug residues via this route. We investigated the amount of cyclophosphamide (CPA) excreted in the sweat of patients receiving CHOP therapy (cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, vincristine, and prednisone). METHODS: The study population

Endocrine mucin-producing sweat gland carcinoma of the cheek.

Endocrine mucin-producing sweat gland carcinoma (EMPSGC) is a low-grade adnexal malignant neoplasm. We report a 90-year-old man who had a hard, dome-shaped tumor approximately 9 mm in diameter on the left cheek. Dermoscopy showed an overall, non-uniformly light-pink tumor with crust. The diagnosis of EMPSGC is made histologically from excisional biopsy. No signs of recurrent disease were evident at 42 months postoperatively.

Elevated sweat chloride test: is it always cystic fibrosis?

BACKGROUND: The sweat chloride test (ST) is the gold standard for cystic fibrosis (CF) diagnosis in symptomatic patients, within the newborn screening and in the follow-up of CF patients during molecular therapies. However, false positives have been reported in patients with different diseases. We describe and discuss 4 cases due to different clinical conditions in which we recorded false positive ST, and the test remained altered for a period of varying length. CASES PRESENTATION: Case 1: Eight months old female child suffering from constipation, recurrent vomiting and failure to thrive, fam

Eccrine Sweat as a Biofluid for Profiling Immune Biomarkers.

PURPOSE: Sweat is a relatively unexplored biofluid for diagnosis and monitoring of disease states. In this study, the proteomic profiling of immune-related biomarkers from healthy individuals are presented. EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN: Eccrine sweat samples are collected from 50 healthy individuals. LC-MS/MS is performed on two pools of sweat samples from five male and female participants. Individual sweat samples are analyzed by antibody isotyping microarrays (n = 49), human cytokine arrays (n = 30), and quantitative ELISAs for interleukin-1α (n = 16), epidermal growth factor (n = 6), and angiogenin

Dermoscopic features of endocrine mucin-producing sweat gland carcinoma.

Endocrine mucin-producing sweat gland carcinoma (EMPSGC) is very rare, with only 61 cases reported to date. EMPSGC is considered to be a low-grade carcinoma of sweat gland origin. Dermoscopic findings of EMPSGC have not been previously reported. We report the first case of a man with EMPSGC, featuring dermoscopic findings. Dermoscopic examinations of the present EMPSGC lesion revealed tumor cell proliferation that appeared as pink ovoid nests and elongated epidermis that resembled a whitish-pink network. Another characteristic finding of the present lesion was the large red/blue globules in pi

Metabolomics analysis of human sweat collected after moderate exercise.

Sweat is a promising biofluid scarcely used in clinical analysis despite its non-invasive sampling. A more frequent clinical use of sweat requires to know its whole composition, especially concerning to non-polar compounds, and the development of analytical strategies for its characterization. The aim of the present study was to compare different sample preparation strategies to maximize the detection of metabolites in sweat from humans collected after practicing moderate exercise. Special emphasis was put on non-polar compounds as they have received scant attention in previous studies dealing

Topics in histopathology of sweat gland and sebaceous neoplasms.

This article reviews several topics regarding sweat gland and sebaceous neoplasms. First, the clinicopathological characteristics of poroid neoplasms are summarized. It was recently reported that one-fourth of poroid neoplasms are composite tumors and one-fourth are apocrine type lesions. Recent progress in the immunohistochemical diagnosis of sweat gland neoplasms is also reviewed. CD117 can help to distinguish sweat gland or sebaceous tumors from other non-Merkel cell epithelial tumors of the skin. For immunohistochemical differential diagnosis between sweat gland carcinoma (SGC) other than

Sweat chloride concentrations in children with Idiopathic Nephrotic Syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Idiopathic Nephrotic Syndrome (INS) has been believed to cause a false positive elevation of sweat chloride concentrations, as measured by the sweat test. METHODS: Sweat tests were done for 11 children with acute onset INS at admission and again while they were in remission, with results being compared to normal historical controls. RESULTS: The initial sweat chloride concentration for 10 patients was normal (mean16.7 ± 11.02 mmol/L) and 1 patient had inadequate collection. This latter patient and two others were excluded during follow-up because of diagnoses other than INS. Swea

Sweat gland progenitors in development, homeostasis, and wound repair.

The human body is covered with several million sweat glands. These tiny coiled tubular skin appendages produce the sweat that is our primary source of cooling and hydration of the skin. Numerous studies have been published on their morphology and physiology. Until recently, however, little was known about how glandular skin maintains homeostasis and repairs itself after tissue injury. Here, we provide a brief overview of sweat gland biology, including newly identified reservoirs of stem cells in glandular skin and their activation in response to different types of injuries. Finally, we discuss

A case of endocrine mucin-producing sweat gland carcinoma.

Endocrine mucin-producing sweat gland carcinoma (EMPSGC), which is an uncommon sweat gland tumor with a predilection for the eyelids, is morphologically analogous to solid papillary carcinoma of the breast. We report the case of a 55-year-old man with a subcutaneous tumor of the upper cheek. The pathological findings for this patient were compatible with those of reported cases of EMPSGC, and p63 staining revealed partial microinvasion into the dermis. On the basis of these findings, the patient was diagnosed with EMPSGC. It is reported that EMPSGC is a precursor of invasive mucinous carcinoma

Sweat and tears: treating the patient with primary hyperhidrosis.

Hyperhidrosis is a distressing disorder characterised by excessive sweating. Whereas some cases are secondary to underlying conditions, primary hyperhidrosis is the more common form affecting around 3% of the population. Typically starting in childhood or adolescence, primary hyperhidrosis has a significant impact on an individual's quality of life and self-esteem, which is similar to that of more well recognised skin conditions, such as psoriasis, severe pruritus and acne. Treatment options for primary hyperhidrosis are varied, including topical treatments, Botulinum toxin A, systemic medicat
