This is the first report on a localized pigmented villo-nodular synovitis (PVNS or TSGCT) occurring in the trochanteric bursa. Bursal involvement in PVNS is extremely rare. Most often PVNS occurs either as a localized or diffuse lesion in a major synovial joint, such as the knee, ankle joint or hip joint. In principle, all synovial structures can be involved. The case reported here is remarkable regarding the long period between the occurrence of the first symptoms and the final diagnosis as well as the age of the female patient (75 yrs). Therapeutically a complete resection was performed in o

Pigmented villonodular synovitis (PVNS) is a non-neoplastic proliferative process that involves synovial tissue in the joints, tendon sheaths and bursae. It usually occurs in young adults, aged 20-50 years, is characteristically monoarticular and of slow progression. Clinical symptoms are nonspecific, and joint stiffness and pain are common in long-term cases. Shoulder PVNS is known to be extremely rare, especially when affecting the subacromial bursal region without joint involvement. Magnetic resonance is the imaging modality of choice in PVNS and is useful for diagnosis, surgical planning a

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Giant cell tumor of tendon sheath and pigmented villonodular synovitis are synovial-based diseases that are generally treated by surgery. For aggressive and recurrent tumors, treatment alternatives are needed. This review explores a targeted therapeutic strategy.
RECENT FINDINGS: Imatinib, a tyrosine kinase inhibitor, blocks expression of colony stimulating factor 1 (CSF1) by a small subpopulation of tumor cells that recruit CSF1-bearing nonneoplastic cells. Limited clinical data support the efficacy and side effect profile of imatinib in stabilizing disease in most patient

Pigmentous villonodular synovitis (P.V.N.S.) is a rare arthropathy consisting in a hypertrophic-hyperplastic reaction of the synovial membrane in circumscribed or diffused form. Involvement of the bond, found very rarely during the course of this arthropathy, seems to be due to compressive-erosive action of diffusely hyperplastic pathologic tissue and not neoplastic invasion. In this note there is a report on the cases of the "G. Pini" Orthopaedic Institute in Milan: 33 cases of P.V.N.S., of which 5 with bone involvement.

INTRODUCTION: Hemosiderotic synovitis (HS) is a rare proliferative disease of the synovium, which is mainly associated with hemophilia and hemarthrosis. The non-hemophilic, post-traumatic form of HS is not common and tends to resemble pigmented villonodular synovitis (PVNS) both in clinical aspects and radiographic evaluations. Though HS is reported in adults, literature covering the condition in younger patients is limited, and this may be one of the factors that lead to delays in the diagnosis and consequent inappropriate therapeutic procedures.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate the characteristics of power Doppler (PD) subclinical synovitis in patients with RA who achieve clinical remission free from physical synovitis.
METHODS: Twenty-nine RA patients were consecutively enrolled. All of the patients had achieved clinical remission [simplified disease activity index (SDAI) 3.3] for at least 6 months at the musculoskeletal ultrasound (MSKUS) examination. Additionally, none of the patients exhibited tender joints at 68 sites or swollen joints at 66 sites. MSKUS of bilateral wrist and finger joints, including the firs

Pigmented villonodular synovitis (PVNS) is a rare proliferative disorder affecting the synovial membranes of joints, bursae, and tendons. The knee joint is one of the most common locations for an intra-articular type of PVNS and this is usually of the diffuse type of PVNS or diffuse pigmented villonodular synovitis (DPVNS). DPVNS tends to be more associated with affectation of contiguous structures. We report a case of a localized form of the disease affecting the knee joint coexisting with an extra-articular lesion of the same nature involving the popliteus tendon sheath of the same knee. The

OBJECTIVE: To validate a semi-automated software method of quantifying knee osteoarthritis (KOA) related effusion-synovitis (ES) and Hoffa-synovitis (HS) on MRI.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: 301 subjects were randomly selected from the FNIH sub cohort, a nested case control study within the Osteoarthritis Initiative (OAI), and distributed into 4 groups based on pain and radiographic progression. Measurements of ES and HS volume were made by 2 readers. Criterion validation was assessed through comparison with the MRI Osteoarthritis Knee Score (MOAKS) and the Spearman correlation coefficient r value.

BACKGROUND Hemosiderotic synovitis (HS) is a rare proliferative synovial disorder with incompletely understood pathophysiology. It mainly affects the knee joint. It can be confused with pigmented villonodular synovitis (PVNS), both clinically and radiologically. HS has not been previously reported in children, and this rare incidence may lead to difficulties in early clinical and radiological diagnosis, possibly affecting the patient's outcome. CASE REPORT A 13-year-old boy presented with progressive right knee pain, swelling, and limitation of movement 2 months after a traumatic injury in a s

BACKGROUND: CT-detected intra-articular (IA) calcification from calcium crystal deposition is associated with worsening cartilage damage and knee pain in osteoarthritis (OA); whether there is associated joint inflammation is unclear. We studied the relation of CT-detected IA calcification to imaging evidence of inflammation (i.e., effusion-synovitis and/or Hoffa-synovitis) on knee MRI in middle-aged and older adults, focusing on tissue-specific relationships.
METHODS: Participants from the Multicenter Osteoarthritis study with knee CTs and MRIs were included. Presence of IA calcification on C

BACKGROUND: Inflammation is increasingly recognised as a treatment target in hand osteoarthritis, and therefore correct measurement of local inflammation is essential. This study aimed to assess ultrasound scoring of synovitis and the additional value of the Global OMERACT/EULAR Ultrasound Synovitis Score (GLOESS) in hand osteoarthritis.
METHODS: Data from the randomised, double-blinded Hand Osteoarthritis Prednisolone Efficacy (HOPE) trial were used. The HOPE trial included patients with painful, inflammatory hand OA, treated with prednisolone or placebo (1:1). Ultrasound was performed in 30

This study aims to investigate the role of parvovirus B19 infection in the pathogenesis of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). B19-NS1 DNA was cloned into the LentiORF pLEX-MCS vector, then co-transfected with the pLEX-MCS-NS1 vector and packaging system to produce LEX-NS1 lentiviral stock. LEX was also prepared as the control. Transduction of LEX-NS1 or LEX lentivirus into the SW982 cell line then proceeded, and total RNA was extracted for RNA-seq. Pathway analysis and comparison of pathway status between this study and GEO datasets were performed, demonstrating that acute phase response signaling, NR

A 1-year-old American Quarter horse was presented with acute onset of right hind lameness. On physical examination, there was synovial effusion of the right tarsocrural joint. Synovial fluid cytology revealed a marked eosinophilic synovitis. Serology indicated evidence of acute and chronic infection with Borrelia burgdorferi, although PCR of the synovial fluid was negative. The filly was treated with phenylbutazone and oxytetracycline, and repeated synovial cytology indicated improvement. The filly was discharged with a prescription of minocycline for 30 days. Despite initial improvement, recu

Rice body synovitis (RBS) is a rare disease, especially in children. Rheumatoid disorders and tuberculosis are the first two reasons for the formation of the RB. The diagnosis is mainly based on imaging and histopathological features. Herein, we report three cases of RBS in children diagnosed with congenital synovial chondromatosis, tuberculosis (unconfirmed), and ANA -positive juvenile idiopathic arthritis. Clinical features, radiographic findings, pathophysiology, treatment process, and prognosis were reviewed and documented meticulously to enhance cognition in this population and provide so
