BACKGROUND: Congenital talipes equinovarus (CTEV) is one of the common congenital disorders in pediatric orthopedic practice that affects a large group of children. It is a combination of four parts of deformity that affect either a single foot or both feet. Our aim in this study is to estimate the prevalence and incidence of CTEV and to evaluate the risk factors that lead to relapse in some children to avoid relapse in future and complex surgical interventions, as well as to improve the final outcome.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective cohort study for the cases of CTEV was conducted to e…

BACKGROUND: With the advancement of molecular technology, fetal talipes equinovarus (TE) is believed to be not only associated with chromosome aneuploidy, but also related to chromosomal microdeletion and microduplication. The study aimed to explore the molecular etiology of fetal TE and provide more information for the clinical screening and genetic counseling of TE by Chromosomal Microarray Analysis (CMA).
METHODS: This retrospectively study included 131 fetuses with TE identified by ultrasonography. Conventional karyotyping and SNP array analysis were performed for all the subjects. They w…

Variations in pedal circulation in congenital talipes equinovarus (CTEV) are well documented. There is a reported risk of vascular injury to the posterior tibial artery (PTA) during operative procedures for CTEV, potentially leading to necrosis and amputation. The aim of this systematic review was to identify the most common anomalies in arterial pedal circulation in CTEV and to determine the relevance of these to clinical practice. The systematic review was registered on PROSPERO and was carried out according to Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta Analyses guidelines by …

UNLABELLED: Long-term results of surgical treatment for congenital talipes equinovarus are documented in the literature but mainly in correlation with clinical and radiographic objective criteria. We present a retrospective study of 48 patients who underwent surgical correction (extended Cincinnati type "a la carte" approach) in our department with an average of 17 years' follow-up. Patients were interviewed and completed a validated disease specific instrument, which evaluates foot function as well as patients' satisfaction, the use of orthotics, shoe size, and the impact of this operation in…

Reports in the literature have suggested a high incidence of congenital deformities, including congenital talipes equinovarus (CTEV), in many Pacific Islands. This study performed a retrospective analysis of cases of CTEV in an isolated region of Papua New Guinea over a 2-year period. Data was collected on the incidence of CTEV, together with an analysis of initial treatment and outcome. The incidence of CTEV was 2.7 per 1,000 live births per year. A peak incidence of CTEV births in September suggested that maternal anaemia secondary to malaria was a significant risk factor. Good functional ou…

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to investigate the utility of chromosomal microarray analysis (CMA) and whole exome sequencing (WES) in fetuses diagnosed with talipes equinovarus (TE), as well as to explore the genetic factors contributing to TE.
METHODS: The study reviewed a total of 241 fetuses with TE between January 2015 and December 2023, categorizing them into two groups based on the absence or presence of additional ultrasound anomalies: 163 cases (67.6%) in the isolated TE group and 78 cases (32.4%) in the syndromic TE group. Karyotyping and CMA were performed for all cases, with WES being…

Talipes equinovarus (TEV) can be an isolated idiopathic deformity or associated with various syndromes. The purpose of our study was to examine the demographics of TEV in Indiana. All TEV patients from 2010 to 2019 from our institution were reviewed, recording standard demographic variables. The socioeconomic level of the family was determined using the 2018 Area Deprivation Index (ADI). There were 568 patients; 456 had idiopathic TEV and 112 syndromic. Within the idiopathic group, 69.1% were male, 92.1% were typical and 7.9% were atypical. Medical issues during the pregnancy occurred in 19.5%…

AIMS: The Ponseti method is the benchmark treatment for the correction of clubfoot. The primary rate of correction is very high, but outcome further down the treatment pathway is less predictable. Several methods of assessing severity at presentation have been reported. Classification later in the course of treatment is more challenging. This systematic review considers the outcome of the Ponseti method in terms of relapse and determines how clubfoot is assessed at presentation, correction, and relapse.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: A prospectively registered systematic review was carried out accordi

Talipes equinovarus is a common congenital deformity. COL9A1 polymorphisms are associated with the development of articular cartilage-related diseases. In the current study, we evaluated the relationship between COL9A1 rs1135056, rs35470562, and rs592121 genetic polymorphisms and risk of congenital talipes equinovarus. Between January 2013 and July 2015, 87 children with congenital talipes equinovarus and 174 control subjects were recruited from the Fourth People's Hospital of Shaanxi and the First Hospital of Yulin. Genotyping of COL9A1 rs1135056, rs35470562, and rs592121 was performed using …

Congenital talipes equino varus (CTEV) is a common complex congenital anomaly affecting approximately 1 per 900 live births in Bangladesh. Current trends in the treatment of idiopathic clubfoot have shifted from extensive surgical release to more conservative techniques. The Ponseti method that includes manipulation, serial casting, percutaneous tenotomy and bracing has recently become very popular for the management of CTEV with reported excellent outcomes. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the outcomes of Percutaneous Tenotomy in the treatment of equinus deformity of idiopathic clubf…

OBJECTIVE: COL9A1 gene is located in the susceptibility region of idiopathic congenital talipes equinovarus (ICTEV) (6q12-13). This study aimed to investigate the expression of the COL9A1 gene and the distribution of single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) of COL9A1 gene in patients with ICTEV and normal controls.
METHODS: Immunohistochemistry was used to detect the expression of COL9A1 in 25 children with ICTEV and 5 normal controls. The frequencies of genotypes and allele of two SNPs in COL9A1 gene rs35470562 and rs1135056 were investigated by PCR-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-…

Amniocentesis for advanced maternal age resulted in the demonstration of a supernumerary microchromosome in the amniotic fluid cells. Cytogenetic analysis of peripheral blood from the female infant revealed a mosaic karyotype 46,XX/47,XX, + marker. The only anomaly noted in the infant was talipes equinovarus.

Tibialis anterior tendon transfer (TATT) is a recognised procedure for the treatment of recurrent congenital talipes equinovarus. The most common technique in use requires three skin incisions and breaching of the plantar tissues, risking pressure areas and damage to neurovascular structures. There have been no studies showing the clinical results of the use of a bone anchor to secure the tendon without drilling through the lateral cuneiform. This study presents the largest series of outcomes for such a procedure. Retrospective case series. Electronic records for all children under 18 undergoi…

INTRODUCTION: Congenital talipes equino varus (club foot) is a frequent congenital deformity of the foot. The Ponseti method is the gold standard for treatment. It consists of foot manipulation with weekly serial cast, minimally invasive surgery and Dennis-Brown bar up to five years.
OBJECTIVE: To describe the follow-up of patients with PEVAC treated using the Ponseti method.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Descriptive, longitudinal study, during 2013-2019, in patients with PEVAC managed with Ponseti method. We included patients with uni- or bilateral club foot, under two years of age, without prior s…
