Effects of exposure to large sharks on the abundance and behavior of mobile prey fishes along a temperate coastal gradient.

Top predators can exert strong influences on community structure and function, both via direct, consumptive effects, as well as through non-consumptive, fear-based effects (i.e. predation risk). However, these effects are challenging to quantify, particularly for mobile predators in marine ecosystems. To advance this field of research, here we used baited remote underwater video stations (BRUVs) to assess how the behavior of mobile fish species off Cape Cod, Massachusetts, was affected by exposure to large sharks. We categorized sites into three levels of differential shark predation exposure

Thin ferrihydrite sediment capping sequestrates phosphorus experiencing redox conditions in a shallow temperate lacustrine wetland.

Synthesized ferrihydrite (Fh) with the dosages of 0.3, 0.6 and 0.9 cm thickness (labeled as Fh, 2Fh and 3Fh respectively, equivalent to 248-774 g/m2) were deployed to serve as the reactive capping layer covering the Ornamental Lake sediments, the Royal Botanic Garden of Melbourne. The sediments were exposed to an alternating regime of oxic/anoxic conditions using laboratory reactors for 45 days. Dynamics of dissolved oxygen (DO), pH, filterable reactive phosphorus (FRP), filterable ammonium (NH4+), nitrate and nitrite (NOx), total dissolved nitrogen (TDN) and dissolved iron (Fe) of overlying w

Which is the best phenotypic trait for use in a targeted selective treatment strategy for growing lambs in temperate climates?

Targeted selective treatment (TST) requires the ability to identify the animals for which anthelmintic treatment will result in the greatest benefit to the entire flock. Various phenotypic traits have previously been suggested as determinant criteria for TST; however, the weight gain benefit and impact on anthelmintic efficacy for each determinant criterion is expected to be dependent upon the level of nematode challenge and the timing of anthelmintic treatment. A mathematical model was used to simulate a population of 10,000 parasitologically naïve Scottish Blackface lambs (with heritable var

Photosynthetic Light Responses May Explain Vertical Distribution of Hymenophyllaceae Species in a Temperate Rainforest of Southern Chile.

Some epiphytic Hymenophyllaceae are restricted to lower parts of the host (< 60 cm; 10-100 μmol photons m(-2) s(-1)) in a secondary forest of Southern Chile; other species occupy the whole host height (≥ 10 m; max PPFD > 1000 μmol photons m(-2) s(-1)). Our aim was to study the photosynthetic light responses of two Hymenophyllaceae species in relation to their contrasting distribution. We determined light tolerance of Hymenoglossum cruentum and Hymenophyllum dentatum by measuring gas exchange, PSI and PSII light energy partitioning, NPQ components, and pigment contents. H. dentatum showed lower

Oviposition strategies of temporary pool mosquitoes in relation to weather, tidal regime and land use in a temperate wetland.

Wetlands have traditionally been associated with harbouring mosquitoes, a well-known nuisance and vectors of diseases. Within mosquito life cycle, oviposition is a determinant event by shaping their individual fitness and vectorial capacity. The study was conducted in one of the main temperate wetlands in South America. We used Generalized Linear Models to study the relation between temperature, precipitation, tidal regime, land use, microenvironment, and the occurrence of floodwater (Ochlerotatus and Psorophora spp.) and raft-laying (Culex and Uranotaenia spp.) mosquitoes using temporary pool

The impact of winter and spring temperatures on temperate tree budburst dates: results from an experimental climate manipulation.

Budburst phenology is a key driver of ecosystem structure and functioning, and it is sensitive to global change. Both cold winter temperatures (chilling) and spring warming (forcing) are important for budburst. Future climate warming is expected to have a contrasting effect on chilling and forcing, and subsequently to have a non-linear effect on budburst timing. To clarify the different effects of warming during chilling and forcing phases of budburst phenology in deciduous trees, (i) we conducted a temperature manipulation experiment, with separate winter and spring warming treatments on well

Resurgence of field fever in a temperate country: an epidemic of leptospirosis among seasonal strawberry harvesters in Germany in 2007.

BACKGROUND: Although leptospirosis is a reemerging zoonosis of global importance, outbreaks related to agricultural exposures are primarily situated in tropical countries. In July 2007, a suspected leptospirosis outbreak was recognized among strawberry harvesters from Eastern Europe who were working in Germany. An investigation was initiated to identify the outbreak source and the risk factors for infection. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study with use of a questionnaire administered to harvesters by health authorities in Romania, Slovakia, and Poland. Collected serum samples w

Source profiles of organic compounds emitted upon combustion of green vegetation from temperate climate forests.

Biomass burning is an important primary source of particles containing biomarker compounds, which are introduced into smoke primarily by direct volatilization/steam stripping and by thermal alteration based on combustion conditions. This study presents comprehensive organic compound source profiles for smoke from controlled burning of green vegetation native to the predominant temperate and semiarid forests of the western United States. Smoke particles were extracted with dichloromethane/methanol (2:1, v/v), and the extracts were analyzed as their TMS derivatives by gas chromatography-mass spe

Phosphatase activity in temperate pasture soils: Potential regulation of labile organic phosphorus turnover by phosphodiesterase activity.

Phosphatase enzymes regulate organic phosphorus (P) turnover in soil, but a clear understanding remains elusive. To investigate this, phosphomonoesterase and phosphodiesterase activities were determined by using para-nitrophenol (pNP) analogue substrates in a range of temperate pasture soils from England and Wales. Substrate-induced phosphatase activity ranged between 2.62 and 12.19 micromol pNP g-1 soil h-1 for phosphomonoesterase and between 0.25 and 2.24 micromol pNP g-1 soil h-1 for phosphodiesterase. Activities were correlated strongly with soil pH and labile organic P extracted in sodium

Divalproex treatment for youth with explosive temper and mood lability: a double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover design.

OBJECTIVE: The authors sought to replicate open-label findings showing that specific criteria for explosive temper and mood lability identify disruptive youth who improve while receiving the anticonvulsant divalproex sodium. METHOD: Twenty outpatient children and adolescents (ages 10-18) with a disruptive behavior disorder (oppositional defiant disorder or conduct disorder) met the specific criteria for explosive temper and mood lability. They received 6 weeks of divalproex treatment and 6 weeks of placebo by random assignment. Independent evaluators blind to group assignment assessed respons

Hippobosca equina as an emerging threat in northern temperate zones: Species distribution modelling under climate change.

Climate change poses significant threats to arthropod vectors of veterinary importance. Hippobosca equina, the forest fly, is an obligate ectoparasite of ungulates with demonstrated capacity for pathogen transmission. We employed maximum entropy modelling to predict current and future global distribution patterns of H. equina under climate change scenarios. Using 1195 occurrence records and five bioclimatic variables, we generated models for present conditions and future projections (2050s and 2070s) under SSP 3-7.0 and SSP 5-8.5 scenarios. Model performance was robust (AUC = 0.954, TSS valida

Characterising Ecosystem Composition, Structure and Function of Alternative Stable States in Temperate Forests of South-Eastern Australia.

Increasingly frequent and intense wildfires threaten to push ecosystems beyond their ecological thresholds. Fire-adapted forests can be vulnerable to ecosystem conversion under shortening fire-return intervals. To evaluate the impacts of fire regime change, we contrasted Eucalyptus forests that retained canopy cover under tolerable regimes (reference forests) with alternative states of markedly reduced canopy. These alternative states established following short-interval wildfires and have persisted through subsequent fires. Alternative states were dominated by more uniform distributions of sm

Epichloë-the obligate mutualist protecting some commercially important temperate grasses from biotic and abiotic stresses.

The relationship between Epichloë fungal endophytes found in some temperate grasses spans the continuum from antagonistic to mutualistic. The predominant focus here is on those that form mutualistic associations with those temperate grasses of the New World due to their substantial economic impact. This review describes the evolutionary origin, discovery, lifestyle and life cycle of Epichloë as background to understand the close association between plant host and fungal endophyte. Many asexual Epichloë fungal endophytes are unique in being obligate mutualists, lacking a free-living stage in na

Ontogenetic and spatial variation in the trophic ecology of the shortfin mako shark (Isurus oxyrinchus) in temperate eastern Australia.

The shortfin mako (Isurus oxyrinchus) is a fast-swimming pelagic shark of global ecological and socioeconomic importance, yet it is relatively understudied in temperate eastern Australian waters. This study investigated the trophic ecology of mako sharks using stable isotope analysis (SIA) of nitrogen (δ15N), carbon (δ13C) and sulphur (δ34S). White muscle tissue samples were obtained from captured during game fishing tournaments along the New South Wales coast between 2005 and 2025. Ontogenetic shifts in isotopic composition were observed across individuals. δ15N values decreased with increasi

Increasing photosynthetic benefit with decreasing irrigation frequency in an Australian temperate pasture exposed to elevated carbon dioxide.

Elevated atmospheric CO2 (e[CO2]) often enhances plant photosynthesis and improves water status. However, the effects of e[CO2] vary significantly and are believed to be influenced by water availability. With a future warmer climate expected to increase the frequency and severity of extreme rainfall, the response of plants to e[CO2] under changing precipitation patterns remains uncertain. We examined the effects of e[CO2] and different irrigation regimes on perennial ryegrass in a free-air CO2 enrichment (FACE) experiment. Immediately after irrigation, the mean net photosynthetic rate was 21.2

Temperate phage-antibiotic synergy is widespread-extending to Pseudomonas-but varies by phage, host strain, and antibiotic pairing.

UNLABELLED: Bacteriophages (phages) are bacterial-specific viruses that can be used alone or with antibiotics to reduce bacterial load. Most phages are unsuitable for therapy because they are "temperate" and can integrate into the host genome, forming a lysogen that is protected from subsequent phage infections. However, integrated phages can be awakened by stressors such as antibiotics. Supported by this interaction, here we explore the potential use of combined temperate phage and antibiotic against the multi-drug-resistant pathogen, Pseudomonas aeruginosa. In all, thirty-nine temperate phag

Assessment of seasonal changes in groundwater quality of waste rock dump in temperate continental climate, northern Japan.

Understanding seasonal groundwater quality changes in temperate continental climate waste rock dumps (WRDs) is necessary for sustainable environmental risk prevention and legacy mine contamination management. Therefore, we conducted a field investigation of a WRD to determine the mechanisms controlling its groundwater quality dynamics. The research aimed to understand the impact of seasonal changes on heavy metals released from the WRD. Three monitoring wells were installed in the WRD to investigate the pH, electrical conductivity (EC), and groundwater level (GL). The mineral composition of th
