[Blepharospasm caused by bilateral paramedian thalamic infarction].

A 67 year-old woman developed a small infarct in the superficial anterior territory of the left middle cerebral artery, then 2 other successive infarcts in the left then right thalamic paramedian territories. Left thalamic infarct was associated with right hemiparesis and speech disorders of the subcortical type. The occurrence of the additional right thalamic infarct was associated with stupor, left hemiparesis and oppositional behavior. A severe blepharospasm and paralysis of convergence and vertical eye movements were also noted. Blepharospasm has been rarely reported with structural centra

Substance P innervation of the rat and cat thalamus. I. Distribution and relation to ascending spinal pathways.

An antiserum for substance P (SP) with minimal cross-reactivity for other tachykinins was employed to map the distribution of SP-positive ne … vation of VPL is similar to that of spinothalamic tract fibers. The SP innervation of somatosensory thalamic nuclei may be supplied, at least in part, by spinothalamic afferent as suggested by the depletion of SP after anterolateral chordotomy but not after ablation of the dorsal column nuclei. The presence of SP-positive spinothalamic neurons in the spinal cord …

Thalamo-cortical projections to the macaque superior parietal lobule areas PEc and PE.

The exposed surface of the superior parietal lobule in macaque brain contains two architectonically defined areas named PEc and PE. The aim of the present study is the characterization of thalamic afferents of these two areas. For this purpose, retrograde neuronal tracers were injected, or placed in crystal form, in areas PEc and PE. We found that the two areas show a similar pattern of thalamic inputs, mainly originating from Lateral Posterior (LP), Pulvinar (Pul), Ventral Posterior Lateral (VPL), and Ventral Lateral (VL) nuclei, all structures known to be involved in visual, somatosensory, a

The thalamostriatal system in normal and diseased states.

Because of our limited knowledge of the functional role of the thalamostriatal system, this massive network is often ignored in models of th … m the caudal intralaminar nuclear group, the center median/parafascicular (CM/Pf) complex, or other thalamic nuclei. The recent use of optogenetic methods supports this model of the organization of the thalamostriatal systems, showing differences in functionality and glutamate receptor localization at thalamostriatal synapses from Pf and other thalamic nuclei. Discrete thalamic lesions attenuate winter adaptations and increase body weight.

The midline thalamus (e.g., the paraventricular thalamic nuclei and the reuniens nucleus) of Siberian hamsters and other mammals has been reported to contain specific binding sites for melatonin, a hormone that is essential for photoperiodically induced winter adaptations such as reproductive quiescence, loss of body weight, daily torpor, and the winter molt. The first experiment investigated whether the midline thalamus is necessary for these winter adaptations. Adult Siberian hamsters received discrete neurotoxic lesions of the paraventricular thalamic nuclei or the reuniens nucleus while un…

How crocodiles lost a forebrain circuit.

Why do brain circuits differ among species of the same or different classes of vertebrates? Answers to this question are critical in determi … eptiles, pallial regions in receipt of dorsal thalamic input do not project directly back to dorsal thalamic nuclei. Instead, pallial areas in reptiles project to the basal nuclei, similar, in part, to the striatum of mammals. The basal nuclei then project back to the dorsal thalamus. This suggested the possibility that this circuit might have been lost in reptil …

Visuomotor signals for reaching movements in the rostro-dorsal sector of the monkey thalamic reticular nucleus.

The thalamic reticular nucleus (TRN) collects inputs from the cerebral cortex and thalamus and, in turn, sends inhibitory outputs to the tha … ns was similar in TRNrd and PMv neurons. Overall, our data suggest that TRNrd neurons provide motor thalamic nuclei with inhibitory inputs that are predominantly devoid of spatial selectivity, and that these signals modulate how these nuclei engage in both sensory processing and motor output during visually guided reaching behavior.

Target identification for stereotactic thalamotomy using diffusion tractography.

BACKGROUND: Stereotactic targets for thalamotomy are usually derived from population-based coordinates. Individual anatomy is used only to scale the coordinates based on the location of some internal guide points. While on conventional MR imaging the thalamic nuclei are indistinguishable, recently it has become possible to identify individual thalamic nuclei using different connectivity profiles, as defined by MR diffusion tractography. METHODOLOGY AND PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Here we investigated the inter-individual variation of the location of target nuclei for thalamotomy: the putative ventral…

Thalamic projections to fields A, AI, P, and VP in the cat auditory cortex.

Thalamocortical projections to four tonotopic fields (A, AI, P, and VP) of the cat auditory cortex were studied by using combined microelectrode mapping and retrograde axonal transport techniques. Horseradish peroxidase (HRP) or HRP combined with either tritiated bovine serum albumin or nuclear yellow was injected into identified best-frequency sites of one or two different fields in the same brain. Arrays of labeled neurons were related to thalamic nuclei defined on the basis of their cytoarchitecture and physiology. In some cases, patterns of labeling were directly compared with thalamic bes…

[Senile subcortical neurofibrillary degeneration with the presence of twisted tubules and straight filaments. Atypical form of progressive supranuclear paralysis].

A case with wide-spread subcortical neurofibrillary changes, cell loss and gliosis in a 81 year old man is described. The most affected areas were both pallida, Luys subthalamic bodies, the substantia nigra and the denate nuclei of the cerebellum. The cerebral cortex contained only a few senile plaques. We interpreted this case as a variety of progressive supranuclear palsy despite the lack of the typical supranuclear ophtalmoplegia and of superior colliculi involvement. In the subthalamic body and in the substantia nigra fibrillary tangles were investigated ultrastructurally and found to cons

Cortico-thalamic hypo- and hyperconnectivity extend consistently to basal ganglia in schizophrenia.

Schizophrenia is characterized by hypoconnectivity or decreased intrinsic functional connectivity (iFC) between prefrontal-limbic cortices and thalamic nuclei, as well as hyperconnectivity or increased iFC between primary-sensorimotor cortices and thalamic nuclei. However, cortico-thalamic iFC overlaps with larger, structurally defined cortico-striato-pallido-thalamo-cortical (CSPTC) circuits. If such an overlap is relevant for intrinsic hypo-/hyperconnectivity, it suggests (i) that patterns of cortico-subcortical hypo-/hyperconnectivity extend consistently from thalamus to basal ganglia nucle…

Neuronal connections of the central amygdalar nucleus with refeeding-activated brain areas in rats.

Following fasting, satiety is accompanied by neuronal activation in brain areas including the central amygdalar nucleus (CEA). Since CEA is known to inhibit food intake, we hypothesized that CEA contributes to the termination of meal during refeeding. To better understand the organization of this satiety-related circuit, the interconnections of the CEA with refeeding-activated neuronal groups were elucidated using retrograde (cholera toxin-β subunit, CTB) and anterograde (phaseolus vulgaris leucoagglutinin, PHA-L) tracers in male rats. C-Fos-immunoreactivity was used as marker of neuronal acti

Anatomical identification of a telencephalic somatosensory area in a reptile, Caiman crocodilus.

Telencephalic projections of a thalamic somatosensory area were investigated in a reptilian species, Caiman crocodilus, by means of horserad … e location of the DVR projection areas of auditory (nucleus reuniens) and visual (nucleus rotundus) thalamic nuclei. This analysis suggested two features. First, telencephalic terminal zones of dorsal thalamic nuclei were largely separate and non-overlapping. Second, the locus of termination in the DVR of each thalamic nucleus reflected each nucleus's topography …

Schizophrenia-like psychosis associated with right lacunar thalamic infarct.

Thalamic dysfunction has been associated with schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders. We describe an adult patient with a lacunar infarct in the posterior region of the right thalamus exhibiting a paranoid schizophrenia-like psychosis as the only clinical manifestation. Neuropsychological assessment showed alterations in visuospatial memory and executive functions at follow up. This case highlights the role of information processing by the thalamus in the development of delusions. We suggest that dysfunction of the right mediodorsal and pulvinar thalamic nuclei disrupts both thalamic sens…

The ascending projections of the nuclei of the descending trigeminal tract (nTTD) in the zebra finch (Taeniopygia guttata).

In our traditional view of the avian somatosensory system, input from the beak and head reaches the telencephalon via a disynaptic pathway, involving projections from the principal sensory nucleus (PrV) directly to nucleus basorostralis (previously called nucleus basalis), whereas input from the rest of the body follows a trisynatic pathway similar to that in mammals, involving projections from the dorsal column nuclei to the thalamus, and thence to somatosensory wulst. However, the role of the nuclei of the descending trigeminal tract (nTTD) in this scenario is unclear, partly because their a

Local cerebral glucose utilization in the symptomatic thiamine-deficient rat: increases in fornix and pyramidal tract.

Local cerebral glucose utilization (LCGU) was measured in asymptomatic rats on a thiamine (B1)-deficient diet for 70 days and in symptomatic rats on a B1-deficient diet for 98 days. LCGU increased in postcommissural fornix (F), pyramidal tracts (P), and inferior internal capsule (CAI) of symptomatic, compared with asymptomatic B1-deficient rats but decreased in thalamic nuclei, auditory structures, and lesioned vestibular nuclei. B1 administration to symptomatic rats improved symptoms; decreased LCGU in F. P, and CAI; increased LCGU in the lesioned vestibular nuclei; but decreased LCGU in mamm…
