BACKGROUND: Understanding how fauna translocation and antiparasitic drug treatment impact parasite community structure within a host is vital for optimising translocation outcomes. Trypanosoma spp. and piroplasms (Babesia and Theileria spp.) are known to infect Australian marsupials, including the woylie (Bettongia penicillata). However relatively little is known about these haemoparasites, or how they respond to management practices such as translocation. We monitored haemoparasites infecting woylies for up to 12 months during two fauna translocations to supplement existing woylie populations

Bovine piroplasmosis is a tick-borne disease caused by apicomplexan hemoparasites of the genera Theileria and Babesia. This study was carried out to assess the presence and frequency of piroplasm parasites in apparently healthy cattle in Kyrgyzstan. A total of 454 blood samples were collected from animals of various ages in eight villages located in the Chu valley and around the Lake Issyk Kul. The hypervariable V4 region of the 18S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) gene was amplified with a set of primers specific targeting members of the genera Theileria and Babesia. Amplified PCR products were hybridize

A PCR-based survey of hemoprotozoa parasites detected Babesia bigemina, Theileria orientalis and Trypanosoma theileri among cattle and water buffalo in Vietnam, and a new Babesia sp. closely related to Babesia ovata was detected in cattle only. In addition, Theileria annulata and Trypanosoma evansi were not detected in both cattle and water buffalo. Phylogenetic analysis detected T. orientalis MPSP genotypes 3, 5, 7 and N3 in cattle and 5, 7, N1 and N2 in water buffalo. Additionally, water buffalo-derived T. theileri CATL sequences clustered together with a previously reported cattle-derived s

Babesia spp., Theileria spp. and Anaplasma spp. are significant tick-borne pathogens of livestock globally. In this study, we investigated the presence and distribution of Babesia ovis, Theileria ovis and Anaplasma ovis in 343 small ruminants (249 sheep and 94 goats) from 13 towns in the Central Anatolia region of Turkey using species-specific PCR assays. The PCR were conducted using the primers based on the B. ovis ssu rRNA (BoSSUrRNA), T. ovis ssu rRNA (ToSSUrRNA) and A. ovis major surface protein 4 (AoMSP4) genes, respectively. Fragments of these genes were sequenced for phylogenetic analys

The performance of reverse line blot (RLB) in detecting DNA of Theileria parva, Theileria mutans and Babesia bigemina was assessed in comparison with specific antibody detection using indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA) for the same parasites. Among 90 field samples from Central Equatoria state, Southern Sudan, ELISA reported more positive samples than RLB did. The concordance of RLB showed 66.7%, 81.1% and 48.9% relative to the results of ELISA for T. parva, T. mutans and B. bigemina respectively. It has to be borne in mind that the results of ELISA might represent previous in

The prevalence of Theileria equi and Babesia caballi was determined in equid blood samples in five provinces of the Black Sea region of Turkey by using the indirect fluorescent antibody test (IFAT). Of 153 samples, 53 (34.6%) and 33 (21.5%) were seropositive to B. caballi and T. equi, respectively. In addition, 8 (5.2%) of samples were seropositive to both T. equi and B. caballi. Anti T. equi and B. caballi antibodies were detected in all five regions. The prevalence of B. caballi was higher than T. equi in all counties. Antibodies to T. equi and B. caballi were detected in horses of all ages,

An apparatus for artificial feeding of Rhipicephalus appendiculatus nymphae was modified to improve feeding performance. Heparinized blood was supplied above a treated artificial membrane while the ticks attached below on its undersurface. The feeding apparatus was incubated at 37 degrees C in an atmosphere of 3% CO2 concentration and a relative humidity of 75-80%. Under these conditions, 91% of the engorged nymphae attained a mean weight of 6-11 mg, and an average of 93% of those nymphae moulted into adults. When this system was used to feed nymphal ticks on blood infected with Theileria parv

A few specialized tick-transmitted protozoa cause fatal infectious diseases in cattle through a unique cell biological mechanism, the transformation of host leukocytes into cancer-like cells. These 'transformative' parasites, such as Theileria annulata, hijack host signaling pathways and, during the schizont stage of their complex life cycle, cause uncontrolled proliferation and immortalization of infected cells, likely through a broad repertoire of fine-tuned effector proteins. This review summarizes recent advancements on the parasite-host interactions proposed to underlie this remarkable tr

IMPORTANCE: Protozoan blood parasites, including Trypanosoma evansi, Theileria annulata, and Babesia spp., remain major constraints to livestock health and productivity across the Middle East and North Africa (MENA). Disease control relies heavily on a limited number of chemotherapeutic agents that have been used for decades, raising concern about declining efficacy and emerging drug resistance.
OBSERVATIONS: This review synthesized and critically evaluated field, experimental, and molecular evidence of antiparasitic drug resistance in major protozoan blood parasites of livestock in the MENA

Theileria spp. are a group of hemoprotozoal parasites pose a significant threat to small ruminants in tropical and subtropical regions of the world. Because of that and due to the limited data on the genetic diversity of Theileria species in Erbil Governorate, northern Iraq, this study was conducted to assess the prevalence of Theileria spp. in sheep and goats using both Giemsa-stained blood smears and PCR methods as a diagnostic criterion. The overall infection rate detected by blood smears was 26.2% in sheep and 18.3% in goats, while PCR showed higher infection rates, 47.7% in sheep and 38.3

Theileriosis is one of the most frequently reported tick borne diseases in tropical and subtropical regions and leads to annual economic losses, such as the reduced dairy products and increased casualties. Tropical theileriosis is caused by Theileria annulata and the present study was designed to improve our knowledge of Theileria annulata infection in Pakistani cattle. In order to assess the prevalence of Theileria annulata on cattle from Multan district in the Punjab province (Pakistan) according to seasons and other risk factors, a total of 1020 blood samples (340 samples each from cross, H

As per 20th livestock census, India possessing 193.46 million cattle and 109.85 million buffaloes in organized and unorganized sectors. These animals are suffering from tick infestation almost throughout the year causing both direct and indirect losses. Repeated use of chemical acaricides for tick management resulted in the establishment of acaricide resistant tick populations, insecticide residues in livestock products and environmental pollution. In the present study, analysis of the data generated during 1990-2021 revealed pooled prevalence of infestations in cattle and buffaloes was 53% [9

In Sudan, donkeys are important animals, providing transportation and income possibilities. However, the prevalence of parasites in donkeys in Sudan has not been thoroughly characterized. Accordingly, in this study, we aimed to detect selected hemoprotozoan parasites in donkeys in West Omdurman, Khartoum State, Sudan, wherein people depend mainly on donkeys for their daily life. In total, 198 blood samples collected from donkeys in a local market in West Omdurman, were screened using serological and molecular diagnostic techniques. Serologically, 52 (26.3%), 56 (28.3%), and 19 (9.6%) samples w

Drug resistance is one of the emerging and re-emerging epidemics affecting both veterinary and public health sectors. Buparvaquone provides the most satisfactory means in the treatment of bovine tropical theileriosis. However, recently there has been widespread reports of development of resistance of Theileria annulata to buparvaquone. To investigate the situation in Sudan where bovine tropical theileriosis is endemic, fifty blood samples from T. annulata-positive cattle. were used for DNA extraction, PCR and cytochrome b gene nucleotide sequencing. Analysis of the two buparvaquone binding sit

BACKGROUND: The African buffalo (Syncerus caffer) is a host for many pathogens known to cause economically important diseases and is often considered an important reservoir for livestock diseases. Theileriosis, heartwater, babesiosis and anaplasmosis are considered the most important tick-borne diseases of livestock in sub-Saharan Africa, resulting in extensive economic losses to livestock farmers in endemic areas. Information on the distribution of tick-borne diseases and ticks is scarce in Northern Botswana. Nevertheless, this data is necessary for targeting surveillance and control measures

A reverse line blot (RLB) assay was developed for detection and specific identification of the different ovine Theileria and Babesia parasites. In a polymerase chain reaction (PCR), the hypervariable region 4 (V4 region) of the 18S ribosomal DNA gene was amplified with a set of general primers specific for members of the genera Theileria and Babesia. Meanwhile, specific oligonucleotide probes were designed and bound on membrane. After one single-PCR amplification, the amplified fragment was hybridized against different generic and species-specific probes. It was able to detect four species, i.

The donkey population has remained unchanged in the last two decades despite a decrease in the overall population of equids, emphasizing the usefulness of the donkey as a draught and pack animal. Piroplasmosis in donkeys, caused by Theileria equi and Babesia caballi, has been recognized as a serious problem of major economic importance as the affected animals manifest decreased working capacity, loss of appetite, etc. In tropical countries, T. equi infections are more wide-spread and pathogenic than those caused by B. caballi. Donkeys usually remain asymptomatic carriers with positive antibody

Protozoa Babesia and Theileria are a group of parasites transmitted by ticks and invading mammals' blood cells. Infections by these protozoa cause heavy losses among farm animals. Since human babesiosis was described forty years ago, the number of reported cases has been increasing. Conventional methods of parasitological diagnostics are unreliable in these diseases, especially in stages with low parasitemia. Methods of nucleic acids detection have been developing fast in recent years and are more and more specific and sensitive. Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) enables detection of DNA of Babe
