Epidemiological and etiological characterization of superficial mycoses in a general hospital in Buenos Aires.

Superficial mycoses are prevalent worldwide. This study analyzed their epidemiology and etiological agents in a general hospital in Buenos Aires. A descriptive, retrospective, and observational study was conducted, including 1584 patients and 1726 samples processed between September 2021 and June 2024. Overall, 57.5% of the samples were positive. Dermatophytosis accounted for 91.3% of the isolates, mainly affecting adult women and pediatric patients. The most frequent clinical manifestations were onychomycosis (66%), tinea corporis (17%), and tinea capitis (14.5%). The predominant species were…

Nannizzia polymorpha as Rare Cause of Skin Dermatophytosis.

Nannizzia polymorpha is a dermatophyte that rarely infects humans. We describe 2 case-patients from Asia who had an inflammatory type of tinea capitis and tinea manuum caused by infection with this fungus. The diagnosis was confirmed on the basis of the morphologic and molecular characteristics of the microorganism.

Case reports. Six cases of infection due to Trichophyton verrucosum.

Dermatophyte infections due to Trichopkyton verrucosum are not frequent in Europe. Six cases observed in Italy in the period 1995-99 are reported. Two were cases of tinea barbae, two of tinea corporis and two of tinea capitis, one of which had been preceded by tinea faciei. In three cases the source of contagion was horses, in two it was cattle and in one case it was another person. The two cases of tinea barbae were initially interpreted and treated as bacterial infections, a diagnostic error reported with increasing frequency in the literature regarding dermatophytosis due to T. verrucosum.

Photodynamic therapy combined with antifungal drugs against kerion: A report of six cases and literature review.

Kerion, a severe manifestation of tinea capitis caused by dermatophytes, is a fungal skin disease primarily affecting children. This report discusses six cases of pediatric kerion that were successfully treated with a combination of photodynamic therapy (PDT) and antifungal agents. Additionally, we conducted a literature review, identifying and analyzing six published reports on kerion and tinea capitis. The characteristics and efficacies of these cases are summarized. In summary, early combination therapy and proactive pre-treatment interventions proved effective in maximizing therapeutic out…

Superficial fungal infections. Getting rid of lesions that don't want to go away.

Systematic analysis of possible dermatophyte and candidal skin infections leads to an accurate diagnosis and prompt treatment with a specific regimen. The first steps are thorough skin examination and evaluation with a potassium hydroxide preparation. Tinea corporis, tinea cruris, tinea pedis, cutaneous candidiasis, and tinea versicolor can be treated with many topical antifungal agents, whereas tinea capitis requires oral griseofulvin therapy. Frequently used topical medications for tinea and candidal infections include clotrimazole (Lotrimin, Mycelex), econazole nitrate (Spectazole), ketocon…

Superficial fungal infections. Topical and oral treatment of common types.

Superficial fungal infections are common dermatologic conditions, and patients often visit primary care physicians for evaluation. Diagnosis can be established with direct microscopic examination, fungal culture, and Wood's light examination. Some infections (eg, tinea corporis, tinea cruris, tinea pedis, pityriasis versicolor) are often successfully treated with a topical antifungal alone. Others (eg, tinea capitis, onychomycosis) require use of a systemic antifungal. Physicians should be familiar with available agents and their adverse effects and closely follow patients receiving long-term …

Cutaneous fungal and viral infections in athletes.

Fungal and viral cutaneous infections are common among athletes and can develop quickly into widespread outbreaks. To prevent such outbreaks, the team physician must be familiar with common cutaneous infections including tinea corporis, tinea capitis, tinea pedis, herpes simplex, molluscum contagiosum, and human papillomaviruses. Appropriate treatment and management of these infections allows the athlete to safely return to play and safeguards teammates and opponents against the spread of these diseases.

Surgery of Kerion, a Nightmare for Nondermatologists.

Kerion is an inflammatory type of tinea capitis characterized by swelling and alopecia of the scalp, which could be mistaken as bacterial infection. It occurs most frequently in children. We report a 10-year-old child whose kerion was misdiagnosed as bacterial abscess and unnecessarily incised. Later, her condition was rediagnosed as kerion based on clinical appearance and potassium hydroxide wet mount. The lesions resolved completely with systemic antifungal treatment, griseofulvin, leaving residual scarring alopecia. The delay in the proper diagnosis and inappropriate treatment of this patie…

Dermatophytosis in northern Greece during the decade 1981-1990.

Dermatophytic infections are very common in Greece. In the Mycological Laboratory of the Venereal and Skin Diseases Hospital in Thessaloniki, 6572 isolates of different dermatophytes were obtained from 17,120 patients examined. It is suggested that 5% of the people who present with skin problems in Greece suffer from dermatophyte infections. They are frequent causative agents of tinea pedis, tinea cruris, tinea corporis, tinea capitis and tinea unguium. In this paper, the species, the number and the prevalence of the dermatophytes were studied according to location and sex of the patients. The…
