Dentifrices for preventing erosive tooth wear: An in vitro comparative study.

Erosive tooth wear is a progressive condition that compromises enamel structure and requires preventive strategies. This in vitro study aimed to compare the protective effects of fluoride-based dentifrices containing various bioactive agents on sound enamel subjected to simulated erosive-abrasive challenges. Sixty bovine enamel blocks were randomly assigned to five dentifrices containing: bioactive silica + 1100 ppm F- from sodium fluoride (BAS/NaF), 0.454% stannous fluoride (SnF), sodium-calcium phosphosilicate + 1426 ppm F- from sodium fluoride (SCP/NaF), 1100 ppm F- from sodium fluoride (Na

Comparative Evaluation of Alumina, Hydroxyapatite, and Their Combination for Dental Enamel Cavity Cutting in an Air Abrasion System: An In Vitro SEM Study.

Dental air abrasion is a minimally invasive technique using abrasive particles to remove carious tooth structure. Alumina particles, commonly preferred due to their cutting efficiency, pose toxicity risks if inhaled. This study evaluated hydroxyapatite (HA) and an alumina + HA combination as alternatives to alumina for enamel cutting efficiency. Extracted human third molars with sound enamel (N = 30) were divided into three groups: (1) alumina 29 μm (control), (2) HA, and (3) alumina + HA. Morphological analysis of powders and cavity cutting performance were assessed using scanning electron mi

Effect of air abrasive polishing on nickel release, stainless steel corrosion, and nickel-titanium archwires.

BACKGROUND: Orthodontic treatment is becoming more and more popular. However, using fixed orthodontic devices for treatment affects oral hygiene and raises the risk of corrosion, plaque-related illnesses, and dental discoloration-related issues. Air abrasive polishing has a superior effect over the conventional method in removing dental deposits. Using fixed orthodontic appliances affects oral hygiene and raises the risk of diseases caused by plaque, tooth discoloration, and corrosion, as well as corrosion by ions. This study evaluated the impact of air polishing on nickel ion release and corr

The use of fluoride for the prevention of dental erosion and erosive tooth wear in children and adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Erosive tooth wear (ETW) has gained increasing clinical relevance. It is estimated that worldwide 30-50% of deciduous and 20-45% of permanent teeth are affected. One of the most important nutritional factors causing ETW is the overconsumption of soft drinks, but also patient-related factors like reflux or eating disorders can lead to erosive lesions. Whether acids lead to erosive demineralisation depends on their degree of saturation with respect to tooth mineral at their actual pH. REVIEW: Fluoride compounds like sodium or amine fluoride seem to be of limited efficacy against ero

Fluoride and magnesium concentrations in human dental calculus obtained from Japanese and Chinese patients.

Calculus deposited on a total of 68 permanent teeth from patients 30-60 years old from Nagoya in Japan and Beijing in China was investigated. An abrasive microsampling method was used to examine the fluoride (F) and magnesium (Mg) distribution, using a fluoride ion-specific electrode and atomic absorption spectrophotometry, respectively. F concentrations decreased from the surface towards the interior of the calculus. Mg concentrations, however, gradually rose towards the innermost surface adjacent to the tooth. In all parts of the depth profiles, the average concentrations of both magnesium a

United by chewing: Hunter-Schreger band-like pattern and wavy enamel in a fossil crocodile suggest functional convergence with mammals and dinosaurs.

Tooth enamel of most mammals shows alternating light and dark bands, called Hunter-Schreger bands (HSB), in longitudinal sections caused by decussating bundles of prisms, the unit building blocks of mammalian enamel. HSB are thought to increase resistance to abrasive food and mitigate crack propagation and hence are considered a mammalian adaptation to high-efficiency mastication. Using traditional microscopy techniques as well as X-ray diffraction computed tomography (XRD-CT), here we report for the first time the presence of HSB-like features in the tooth enamel of a non-mammalian amniote, I

Minimally Invasive Endodontic Treatment through the Labial/Buccal Cervical Approach - Protocol and Case Series.

INTRODUCTION: Traditional access cavity preparation involves removing the roof of the pulp chamber and smoothing the dentin bulges at the root canal orifice, thereby creating straight-line access. However, this may damage more healthy dental tissue and reduce the tooth's fracture resistance. This case series presents a novel minimally invasive endodontic protocol for 1 maxillary canine and 4 mandibular premolars, which required root canal therapy, due to labial/buccal cervical decay that caused pulpitis or periapical periodontitis. METHODS: Our treatment protocol includes the following steps:

Tobacco-associated lesions of the oral cavity: Part I. Nonmalignant lesions.

The excessive use of tobacco products has been associated with various lesions in the oral cavity. Tobacco-associated lesions include tooth stains, abrasions, smoker's melanosis, acute necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis and other periodontal conditions, burns and keratotic patches, black hairy tongue, nicotinic stomatitis, palatal erosions, leukoplakia, epithelial dysplasia and squamous-cell carcinoma. A routine intraoral examination by a dental health professional can reveal most of these lesions at an early stage, and early intervention may prevent serious sequelae. Thus, detection of tobacco

Bleaching a devital primary tooth using sodium perborate with walking bleach technique: a case report.

Nowadays, both children and parents place a greater value on appearance and aesthetics than has previously been the case. Primary teeth with intrinsic discoloration may be treated by a number of methods, including facings and abrasion. However, dental bleaching may offer a safer alternative that can be completed with less chair time and without harming dental structures. This case report describes the treatment of a darkened primary tooth of a 4-year-old boy with sodium perborate using the walking bleach technique and its 1-year clinical and radiographical follow-up. During this 1-year follow-

A novel approach to treat gingival recession and non-caries cervical lesion combined defects: Restoration guided creeping attachment (RGCA) technique. A case report.

Gingival recessions have multifactorial etiology and are often associated with non-caries cervical lesions. Different surgical techniques have been proposed over the years for their treatment, according to the severity of the recession. A novel technique, called restoration guided creeping attachment (RGCA), for the treatment of combined gingival recession and non-caries cervical lesion is presented. RGCA aims at treating Miller class I and II recessions using a specifically designed composite restoration and a minimally invasive approach. A clinical case describing the technique and forming t

Dental microwear evidence for a dietary shift between two nonmaize-reliant prehistoric human populations from Indiana.

Several recent studies have demonstrated the efficacy of dental microwear analysis (DMA) for dietary reconstruction among nonhuman primates, early hominids, and prehistoric humans. The current study seeks microwear evidence for a paleobotanically suggested change in the types of foods that were consumed by two temporally distinct populations of the North American eastern woodlands. This particular dietary shift between the Late Archaic and the Early/Middle Woodland periods did not include the introduction of maize or any other tropical cultigen. In contrast, most dietary reconstructions from t

Dentin hypersensitivity. Occlusion of dentinal tubules by brushing with and without an abrasive dentifrice.

Daily toothbrushing with and without an abrasive dentifrice was performed on the ground surfaces of human cervical dentin attached to resin plates, which had been exposed to the oral cavities of 4 subjects for 8 weeks. Brushing with a dentifrice containing calcium hydrogen phosphate as an abrasive caused most of the dentinal tubules to open. The patency of dentinal tubules is thought to induce dentin hypersensitivity. Brushing without a dentifrice, on the other hand, resulted in occlusion of the dentinal tubules with organic pellicle-containing minerals. Furthermore, abrasion did not occur; ho

A comparison of medieval and modern dentitions.

The dentitions of 23 skulls, mostly excavated from a 'plague pit' dating from 1348, were investigated using a Reflex Metrograph. The measurements obtained were compared with those from a modern control sample. It was found that in the medieval dentitions the arch widths were significantly wider, arch lengths and tooth lengths smaller, and the degree of irregularity of the teeth was greater than a modern group.
