Traction removal of percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy devices in children.

BACKGROUND: There are few published data on non-endoscopic removal of percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy devices in children. AIMS: To describe prospective data acquired for traction removal of percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy devices at a single pediatric center over a 5-year period. METHODS: Data were obtained from endoscopy records, computerized hospital patient information systems and case note analysis. The device that could be removed by traction was the Corflo (Merck) 12-Fr percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy tube with a collapsible internal retention dome. All procedures were per

[Potentialities of traction therapy for diskogenic compressive radicular syndromes].

This study included 78 patients with lumbar subligamentary herniation. Based on their clinical and functional examination, several variants of diskogenic radiculopathies were distinguished. Special emphasis was laid on the evaluation of efficiency of underwater vertical traction in these patients. The proposed method was shown to produce better effect than underwater horizontal traction when used for the treatment of both axonopathies and axonomyelinopathies. The efficiency of underwater vertical traction applied to the treatment of axonopathies appears to be higher than in patients with axono

Mechanical traction for mechanical neck disorders: a systematic review.

OBJECTIVE: To assess whether mechanical traction, either alone or in combination with other treatments, improves pain, function/disability, patient satisfaction and global perceived effect in adults with mechanical neck disorders. METHODS: We conducted a systematic review up to September 2004 of randomized controlled trials and used pre-defined levels of evidence for qualitative analysis. Two independent reviewers conducted study selection, data abstraction and methodological quality assessment. Using a random effects model, relative risk and standardized mean differences were calculated. The

Superior labral anteroposterior lesions: MR arthrography with arm traction.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the efficacy of arm traction combined with MR arthrography in the evaluation of superior labral anteroposterior (SLAP) lesions. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Cadaveric shoulders were studied with a 1.5-T MR imaging unit with the arm externally rotated. Fifteen milliliters of a gadolinium-containing contrast agent were injected into the glenohumeral joint. Twenty-four sets of images of cadaveric joints were evaluated independently by two observers. These sets consisted of MR arthrographic images obtained with traction (applied to the wrist using

Whiplash-associated chronic headache treated with home cervical traction.

The subject of this case report was a 56-year-old woman who sustained a whiplash-associated disorder as a result of a motor vehicle accident. Within a few hours after the accident, she developed a headache, which became chronic, creating disability and hindering the quality of her life. In the following year, a variety of diagnostic tests, medications, and physical therapy were unsuccessful in determining the cause of her complaints or in relieving them. After this year, she expressed anger, frustration, and a reluctance to undergo additional physical therapy. By listening to her explain how s

Management of severe facial injuries by local tissue traction.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the technique of tissue traction for the management of severe facial injuries. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Twenty patients, 15 adults and five children, with severe soft tissue facial disfigurement resulting from war injuries were treated by the tissue traction technique. RESULTS: This procedure provides a cosmetically acceptable appearance when used as an immediate measure. A few complications were encountered in delayed cases such as areas of skin breakdown and some stiffness. CONCLUSION: The described technique proved to have several advantages over other more commonly use

Intermittent cervical traction: a progenitor of lumbar radicular pain.

Twelve patients treated with cervical traction for complaints of cervical radicular pain subsequently developed lumbar radicular discomfort. Intermittent cervical traction therapy had been initiated at 15 pounds and increased to 30 pounds. Lumbar spine roentgenographs in four patients demonstrated a transitional lumbar vertebrae and ten patients had evidence of spinal osteoarthritis with associated degenerative changes. Abnormal electroneuromyographs were found in four patients. In two additional patients with normal electromyographs, the spinal evoked potentials were asymmetrically slowed sug

Vitrectomy for macular traction caused by incomplete vitreous separation.

Pars plana vitrectomy was performed in 16 eyes to release vitreomacular traction. All patients had a symptomatic preoperative decrease in visual acuity, most often to 20/200. Partial detachment of the posterior vitreous surface was associated with vitreoretinal attachment remaining in the area of the macula and sometimes to the optic nerve head. The posterior vitreous traction on the macula was released by tangential traction on the posterior vitreous surface, causing it to separate from the retina. The postoperative vision was the same or improved in each case. No operative complications occu

Traction osteophytes of the lumbar spine: radiographic-pathologic correlation.

Previous reports have emphasized two types of osteophytes on the anterior aspects of the lumbar vertebral bodies: the common claw osteophyte and the less common but more significant traction osteophyte, which is indicative of spinal instability. To delineate the importance of the traction osteophyte, a radiographic-pathologic study was conducted. The results indicate that claw osteophytes are more frequent than traction osteophytes, that both may coexist in a single vertebral body, and that, in most cases, these osteophytes appear to represent different stages of the same pathologic process.

Lumbar instability: a dynamic approach by traction-compression radiography.

Translatory segmental instability was provoked by successive axial traction and compression of the lumbar spine in 117 patients with a known spondyl- or retro-olisthetic displacement. Lateral spot radiography showed an anteroposterior translatory movement of 5 mm or more in 24 of 45 patients with lytic spondylolisthesis of L5, in all of 7 patients with degenerative spondylolisthesis of L4, and in 37 of 65 patients with a retro-olisthetic displacement of L3, L4, or L5. In cases of spondyl- and retro-olisthetic instability the upper vertebra moved posteriorly during traction and anteriorly durin

Comparison Between Computed Tomography Arthrography (CTA) Without Traction, CTA With Traction, and Magnetic Resonance Arthrography in Hip Impingement: What Is the Best Method?

PURPOSE: Femoro-acetabular impingement (FAI) is a possible mechanism for the development of early osteoarthritis. FAI occurs when there is a conflict between the rim of the acetabulum and the femoral neck, usually due to irregularities of the proximal femur or acetabulum. Our aims were to compare the diagnostic efficacy of computed tomography arthrography (CTA) without traction, CTA with traction, and magnetic resonance arthrography (MRA) for the detection and grading of chondral and labral lesions in patients with a clinically positive impingement test and to determine the correlation between

Beyond axial length: posterior segment curvature determining vitreoretinal traction.

PURPOSE: To create an algorithm to calculate the posterior radius of curvature of Bruch´s membrane (rBM) on regular optical coherence tomography (OCT) and determine the association between posterior segment shape and vitreoretinal disease. METHODS: Retrospective cross-sectional study that included patients with macular hole (MH) or rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD). RRD eyes were matched with MH eyes based on age and axial length (AL), resulting in a final analysis of 43 eyes in each group. OCT B-scans were processed using a custom but open algorithm to calculate the rBM. RESULTS: rBM

Direct traction MR imaging of the wrist: practical experience.

OBJECTIVE: To study the effect of direct wrist traction on patient pain and joint distraction on MRI. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 291 patients (109 males, 182 females; mean age, 45.8 years) who underwent wrist MRI between November 2019 and September 2024 were studied (152 patients with traction, 139 patients without traction). All patients completed a questionnaire assessing wrist pain scores before, during, and ten minutes after MRI examination. Joint space width and cartilage visibility of the radiocarpal and intercarpal joints were assessed. For patients with arthroscopy within one year after M
