A first nation-wide assessment of soil-transmitted helminthiasis in Fijian primary schools, and factors associated with the infection, using a lymphatic filariasis transmission assessment survey as surveillance platform.

BACKGROUND: Soil-transmitted helminthiasis (STH) is endemic in Fiji but its prevalence is not known and likely to have changed after a decad … prevalence levels for ascariasis were 8.7% (95% CI: 4.3-16.6), hookworm 3.9% (95% CI: 2.3-6.6) and trichuriasis 0%. In the Eastern Division, ascariasis prevalence was 13.3% (95% CI: 6.4-25.6), and hookworm 0.7% (95% CI: 0.2-2.5), with one case of trichuriasis. Among class 3-8 students, ascariasis prevalence was lower. Lower risk of any STH was associated with …

Intestinal helminthiasis in ex-patriates returning to Britain from the tropics. A controlled study.

A retrospective study was performed of clinical features in expatriates attending the Hospital for Tropical Diseases, London, with a sole diagnosis of ascariasis (100), trichuriasis (100), hookworm (75), and strongyloidiasis (36). Results were compared with a control group of 100 ex-patriates attending the same hospital in whom no diagnosis was made and in whom stool microscopy and peripheral blood eosinophil counts were normal. Almost one half of all patients with intestinal helminthiasis were asymptomatic. Of those with symptoms specific clinical features were no different from controls with…

Anthelmintics. Current concepts in the treatment of helminthic infections.

This article discusses the anthelmintics now in common use and describes their mode of action and toxic side effects. The drugs reviewed include: pyrantel pamoate, mebendazole, piperazine, thiabendazole, niclosamide, praziquantel, niridazole, oxamniquine and diethylcarbamazine. Most of the common roundworm intestinal infections respond to treatment with pyrantel pamoate, which has the advantage of single-dose therapy. Trichuriasis requires therapy with mebendazole, while the filariases are treated with diethylcarbamazine. There is no specific therapy for trichinellosis, but its symptoms can be…

Biological role of excretory-secretory proteins in endemic parasites of Latin America and the Caribbean.

Neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) share certain traits: they are parasitic infections, prevailing in tropical environments and affecting marginalized sectors of the population. Six NTDs - ascariasis, cysticercosis, echinococcosis, hookworm infection, onchocerciasis and trichuriasis - all of them endemic in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC), are analysed in this work. This review aims to discuss key information on the function of excretory/secretory (E/S) proteins from these parasites in their infectivity, pathogeny and diagnosis. The modulation of the host immune system to favour the perm…

Significant changes in gastrointestinal tract parasitic infections in children of St. Kitts over the 9-year period 1982-1991.

When 239 (1982) and 361 (1991) five- and nine-year-old children in St. Kitts were assessed for the presence of parasitic infections, there were significant reductions in the prevalence of trichuriasis from 83% to 58%, of ascariasis from 24% to 8.6% and of giardiasis from 15% to 9.4%. Anthelminthic use, which appeared to be the most important responsible intervention tool, remained roughly at the same level at 59-51%. However, the types of anthelminthics used changed over the period. Piperazine citrate, which was used by 66% in 1982, only had 35% usage in 1991. Albendazole which was not used at…

Intestinal and blood parasites of man on Alor Island Southeast Indonesia.

A survey of blood and intestinal parasites in a coastal and a mountainous area of the remote island of Alor, southeastern Indonesia revealed widespread infection with pathogenic intestinal protozoa and helminths, malaria and filaria. Amoebiasis (31.2%), ascariasis (35.3%) and hookworm infections (28.6%) were common, reflecting primitive sanitation and hygiene. Trichuriasis rates (6.8%) were less than expected perhaps due to the prolonged dry season and soil factors in the area. Timor filariasis was found in coastal villagers (10.5%), but not in persons living at an elevation of 500 meters; a l…
