Trends in RM with 2 TU PPD-L were analysed in 71 children at the time of detection of tuberculosis of intrathoracic lymph nodes (TITLN). The disease is often diagnosed in children getting infected with tuberculosis infection. Monotonous tuberculin tests represent the most frequent variant of tuberculin allergy at the time of TITLN diagnosis in children. Careful follow-up of children with monotonous RM (2 TU) may improve TITLN outcomes.

To clarify whether the size of tuberculin reaction could be used as an useful index of the severity of tuberculosis, we analyzed the sizes of tuberculin reaction (TR) of 60 children below 4 years of age with active tuberculosis at the time of diagnosis. Of 60 patients, 53 (88.9%) had positive reactions to tuberculin. The mean size of TR of 60 patients was 24.0 +/- 13.9 mm and maximum size was 60 mm. Cytochemical tuberculin-associated shifts along with their prognostic evaluation were studied in 30 patients with silicosis and silicotuberculosis with intrathoracic adenopathy. The study revealed that a decrease of alkaline phosphatase activity of neutrophils, alpha-glycerophosphate dehydrogenase and succinate dehydrogenase lymphocytes could serve as an early indicator of tuberculosis process in the pulmonary tissue and intrathoracic lymph nodes.

Efficiency of the clinical use of a new procedure for estimating the host focal response to subcutaneous administration of 50 TU of OT was studied in 121 patients. The procedure is based on measuring conductivity in the zones of lowered resistance on the scrotum skin and over the prostate at the background of a provocative tuberculin test performed with apparatus Elektronika-Elita-4M. The procedure provided positive effects in 85 per cent of the patients with tuberculosis of the external genitalia and in 50 per cent of the patients with specific inflammation of the prostate.

A new tuberculin-active substance, designated TAS-1D3, has been purified from the extract of Mycobacterium bovis BCG by precipitation at pH 4.2, ethanol fractionation, and column chromatography involving CM-cellulose, QAE-Sephadex A-25, Sephadex G-100, and Sephadex G-75. TAS-1D3 was homogeneous in polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and positive in both Coomassie brilliant blue and periodic acid-Shiff staining, suggesting that TAS-1D3 is a glycoprotein. A tuberculin carbohydrate fraction, GAE, in sensitized animals induced a delayed type of skin reactivity and inhibited the migration of macrophages but failed to stimulate lymphocyte transformation in vitro. Tuberculin protein-containing fractions were active in each test. These results show that in vitro lymphocyte transformation is not necessarily a corollary of delayed type hypersensitivity.
