Vaccination against tuberculosis, polio and hepatitis B at birth in Podor health district, Northern Senegal: cross-sectional study of vaccination coverage and its associated factors.

BACKGROUND: In Senegal, studies focusing specifically on vaccination coverage with the Bacille de Calmette et Guérin (BCG) vaccine, the birth dose of oral polio vaccine (OPV zero dose) and the birth dose of hepatitis B (HepB-BD) vaccine are insufficient. This study aimed to highlight vaccination coverages with birth doses and factors associated with timely vaccination in Podor health district. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was carried out from June 19 to 22, 2020. The study population consisted of children aged 12 to 23 months of which 832 were included. A stratified two-stage cluster surv

Do selective immunisation against tuberculosis and hepatitis B reach the targeted populations? A nationwide register-based study evaluating the recommendations in the Norwegian Childhood Immunisation Programme.

BACKGROUND: Selective immunisation is an alternative to universal vaccination if children at increased risk of disease can be identified. Within the Norwegian Childhood Immunisation Programme, BCG vaccine against tuberculosis and vaccine against hepatitis B virus (HBV) are offered only to children with parents from countries with high burden of the respective disease. We wanted to study whether this selective immunisation policy reaches the targeted groups. METHODS: The study population was identified through the Norwegian Central Population Registry and consisted of all children born in Norw

Predictive value of systemic immune-inflammatory biomarkers for drug-induced liver injury in hepatitis B virus surface antigen positive tuberculosis patients: A retrospective observational study.

Drug-induced liver injury (DILI) is a major concern in tuberculosis (TB) treatment. For early detection of DILI, immune-inflammatory biomarkers are needed for better management. To explore the predictive effect of systemic immune-inflammation index (SII) combined with neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), monocyte-to-lymphocyte ratio (MLR), eosinophil (EOS%), and CD4/CD8 on DILI occurrence in TB patients with HBsAg positive. This is a retrospective study enrolling patients who were treated with anti-tuberculosis drugs and infected with hepatitis B virus (HBV

Prevalence of HIV, viral hepatitis B/C and tuberculosis and treatment outcomes among people who use drugs: Results from the implementation of the first drop-in-center in Mozambique.

BACKGROUND: People who use drugs (PWUD) which includes both people who inject drugs (PWID) and non-injection drug users (NIDU) are marginalized, experience high levels of stigma and discrimination, and are likely to have challenges with accessing health services. Mozambique implemented the first drop-in center (DIC) for PWUD in Maputo City in 2018. This analysis aims to assess the prevalence of HIV, viral hepatitis B (HBV) and C (HCV) and tuberculosis (TB) among PWUD, and assess their linkage to care and associated correlates. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional retrospective analysis of

Summary of CDC consultation to address social determinants of health for prevention of disparities in HIV/AIDS, viral hepatitis, sexually transmitted diseases, and tuberculosis. December 9-10, 2008.

In December 2008, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) convened a meeting of national public health partners to identify priorities for addressing social determinants of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), viral hepatitis, sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), and tuberculosis (TB). The consultants were divided into four working groups: (1) public health policy, (2) data systems, (3) agency partnerships and prevention capacity building, and (4) prevention research and evaluation. Groups focused on identifying top priorities; describing

Prevalence of hepatitis B virus (HBV) and latent tuberculosis co-infection and risk of drug-induced liver injury across two large HBV cohorts in the United States.

The epidemiology of latent tuberculosis and hepatitis B virus (HBV-LTBI) co-infection among U.S. populations is not well studied. We aim to evaluate LTBI testing patterns and LTBI prevalence among two large U.S. cohorts of adults with chronic HBV (CHB). Adults with CHB in the Chronic Hepatitis Cohort Study (CHeCS) and Veterans Affairs national cohort were included in the analyses. Prevalence of HBV-LTBI co-infection was defined as the number of HBV patients with LTBI divided by the number of HBV patients in a cohort. Multivariable logistic regression evaluated odds of HBV-LTBI co-infection amo

Hepatitis B and C virus infections and associated factors among HIV-positive and HIV-negative tuberculosis patients in public health facilities, Northeast Ethiopia: A comparative cross-sectional study.

OBJECTIVE: Viral hepatitis, particularly hepatitis B virus and hepatitis C virus, is the leading cause of global liver-related morbidity and mortality. Concomitant infections of hepatitis B virus, hepatitis C virus, and tuberculosis are risks of hepatotoxicity and death due to antituberculosis therapy. Hepatitis and human immunodeficiency virus coinfection poses challenges in treating hepatotoxic patients and leads to mortality during antituberculosis treatment. Thus, this study aimed to determine the prevalence of hepatitis B virus and hepatitis C virus infections, and associated factors amon

Detection of substantial numbers of latent tuberculosis and positive hepatitis B serology results in rheumatology patients preparing to receive intensified immunosuppressive therapy in a low-prevalence country: why screening still matters.

INTRODUCTION /OBJECTIVES: International guidelines recommend screening for latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) and chronic viral hepatitis infections before initiating intensified immunosuppressive therapy. We assessed the prevalence of positive screening tests for LTBI, hepatitis B virus (HBV), and hepatitis C virus (HCV) in patients screened at a large rheumatology outpatient center in Germany. METHOD: This retrospective cohort study used electronic health records from adult rheumatology patients. The presence of LTBI was evaluated by chest X-rays, patient medical history/self-report, and

Hepatic lesions in an elderly woman - cancer isn't always the answer.

Multiple hepatic lesions in an elderly woman usually suggest metastatic malignant disease, in most situations already beyond cure. However, we present the case of an 81-year-old female in whom histopathology verified granulomas and PCR proved hepatic tuberculosis. Tuberculostatic quadruple therapy resulted in complete remission. Isolated hepatic tuberculosis is rare, especially in HIV-negative subjects living in areas of low tuberculosis prevalence. This case highlights the need to histopathologically confirm malignancy as withholding therapy would have been deleterious in this curable patient

Multiloculated thoracoabdominal tuberculosis: A radiological presentation of disseminated tuberculosis.

Tuberculosis is more frequently found among high-risk populations in the United States. It has a challenging diagnosis since it can present with diverse organ involvement that may delay the diagnosis. This is especially true regarding hepatic tuberculosis, with prevalence varying in each study but highly suggestive of underdiagnosis. An 18-year-old male with high-risk exposure to multidrug-resistant tuberculosis presented with fever, night sweats, weight loss, and cough. Imaging revealed a right lung cavitary mass with bilateral pulmonary nodules, right pleural nodular thickening traversing di

Hepatosplenic tuberculosis simulating secondary malignant lesions with cholangitis.

BACKGROUND: Hepatic and/or splenic tuberculosis may simulate much pathology including malignancies, which can roam the diagnosis. Biopsy is necessary for diagnosis. The treatment allows healing and a cleaning of radiological lesions. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case of a 48-old-black Senegalese woman, immunocompetent, hospitalized for febrile jaundice and poor general condition. Imaging and hepatic biopsy showed hepatosplenic tuberculosis with cholangitis, simulating secondary malignancies lesions. The outcome was favorable under treatment. CONCLUSION: In front of hepatic nodular lesions

Tubercular hepatic abscess--a rare presentation.

Hepatic tuberculosis is one of the rare forms of extra-pulmonary tuberculosis. The focal or nodular form presenting as tuberculoma or abscess is uncommon. Hepatic tuberculosis without involvement of lungs or other organs is even rarer. We report a rare case of primary tubercular liver abscess without involvement of any other organ of body.

Primary hepaticobiliary tuberculosis mimicking gall bladder carcinoma with liver invasion: a case report.

Primary hepatic tuberculosis is a rare presentation and sporadically reported in the literature, mostly from our part of the world. Sometimes the presentation can be atypical and mimics hepatic tumor and poses diagnostic challenge. We, herein, present a case of a 58-year-old man who presented to us with abdominal pain and weight loss. Raised serum alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and imaging raised a suspicion of gall bladder carcinoma with hepatic invasion. Peroperative frozen section revealed hepatic chronic granulomatous inflammation with caseous necrosis consistent with the diagnosis of hepatic
