Global output of research on epidermal parasitic skin diseases from 1967 to 2017.

BACKGROUND: Epidermal parasitic skin diseases (EPSD) occur in most countries and cause a considerable health and economic burden, particular … ed to retrieve documents about EPSD for the study period (1967-2017). The study focused on scabies, tungiasis, pediculosis, hookworm-related cutaneous larva migrans (HrCLM), myiasis, and cutaneous strongyloidiasis. Documents that specifically and explicitly discuss EPSD in animals, aquatic organisms, and birds were excluded. RESULTS: In total, 4186 documen …

[Ecoparasitoses and public health in Brazil: challenges for control].

Parasitic skin diseases such as scabies, pediculosis, tungiasis, and cutaneous larva migrans are hyperendemic in the numerous poor communities in Brazil and are commonly associated with considerable morbidity. However, programs to control ectoparasites are non-existent in the country's public health system. Due to neglect of these diseases by the population itself and health care professionals, the diseases' highly contagious characteristics, and lack of effective treatment and/or presence of animal reservoirs together with a complex life cycle, effective control of ectoparasites is an enormou…

Better floors, better health: a theory of change for an improved household flooring intervention in rural communities in Kwale and Bungoma counties, Kenya.

BACKGROUND: Household flooring is increasingly being investigated as a determinant of health, however the pathways through which flooring may impact health and wellbeing are not yet well understood. The SABABU study is a cluster-randomised controlled trial evaluating the impact of an improved flooring intervention on soil-transmitted helminthiasis, tungiasis, and enteric infections in Bungoma and Kwale counties, Kenya. This paper presents the findings from a theory of change development process that was undertaken as part of the formative research phase of the SABABU project. METHODS: A co-cr…

Tunga penetrans and further parasites in the giant anteater (Myrmecophaga tridactyla) from Minas Gerais, Brazil.

The Brazilian savannah-like area, the Cerrado region, covers large areas of the country and provides a habitat for a multitude of different animal species. The giant anteater (Myrmecophaga tridactyla) is geographically widespread and one of the typical inhabitants of the Cerrado. They are listed as vulnerable by the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources. A population loss of at least 30 % over the past 10 years has been estimated based on local extinctions, habitat loss and deaths caused by fires, roadkills and hunting. Little is known about ecological and in par

Operationalising One Health for epidermal parasitic skin diseases: threshold-triggered mass drug administration and a minimal indicator set.

Epidermal parasitic skin diseases (EPSDs)-including scabies, pediculosis, cutaneous leishmaniasis, tungiasis and cutaneous larva migrans-affect millions worldwide yet remain neglected within global health programmes. Control is hindered by delayed diagnosis, fragmented service delivery, weak surveillance and limited integration of human, animal and environmental interventions. This review operationalises a One Health approach for EPSDs by proposing a pragmatic, threshold-triggered control pathway supported by a minimal indicator set suitable for district-level implementation. Evidence publishe…

[Vacation and tropical dermatoses].

Besides fever and diarrhea, skin diseases are the third most common cause of morbidity in returning travelers after a stay in a tropical country. Approximately one- quarter of these dermatological symptoms can be referred to a classical tropical disease. The majority are of infectious origin. Often only the clinical appearance leads to the diagnosis of a tropical disease as myiasis, cutaneous larva migrans, tungiasis or cutaneous leishmaniasis. Not infrequently the dermatological symptoms lead to the diagnosis of a primarily systemic tropical disease. For example, an eschar with or without a r…

As such, dermo … erns have been described for viral warts, molluscum contagiosum, scabies, pediculosis, tinea nigra, tungiasis, cutaneous larva migrans, ticks and reactions to spider leg spines. Besides the diagnostic role of dermoscopy, there is increasing evidence that it can also assist in the monitoring of treatment efficacy for some of these conditions. CONCLUSION: Al …

Tunga penetrans causing a rapidly progressing foot ulcer in a patient with uncontrolled type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Tungiasis is a parasitic disease resulting from infestation by a female flea Tunga penetrans. The parasites are endemic in the tropics and can infect patients with diabetes mellitus (DM). Augmented by uncontrolled hyperglycemia and pre-existing neuropathy, the parasite may trigger a locally spreading inflammation, which may aggravate the trauma introduced during its extraction, leading into a rapidly progressing foot ulcer. To the best of our knowledge, no such cases in patients with type 2 diabetes have ever been published from Tanzania and likely none worldwide. This case report shows that, …

Arthropod-borne diseases associated with political and social disorder.

The living conditions and the crowded situations of the homeless, war refugees, or victims of a natural disaster provide ideal conditions for the spread of lice, fleas, ticks, flies and mites. The consequence of arthropod infestation in these situations is underestimated. Along with louse-borne infections such as typhus, trench fever, and relapsing fever, the relationship between Acinetobacter spp.-infected lice and bacteremia in the homeless is not clear. Murine typhus, tungiasis, and myiasis are likely underestimated, and there has been a reemergence of bed bugs. Attempted eradication of the…

Tunga penetrans: molecular identification of Wolbachia endobacteria and their recognition by antibodies against proteins of endobacteria from filarial parasites.

In search of Wolbachia in human parasites, Wolbachia were identified in the sand flea Tunga penetrans. PCR and DNA sequencing of the bacteri … against hsp 60 from Yersinia enterocolitica. These results show that as in filariasis, humans with tungiasis are exposed to Wolbachia. Furthermore, antisera raised against proteins of Wolbachia from arthropods or from filarial parasites can be immunologically cross-reactive.

[Ectoparasites. Part 2: Bed bugs, Demodex, sand fleas and cutaneous larva migrans].

Ectoparasites or epidermal parasites include a very heterogenous group of infections of the outer layers of the skin. Worldwide the most common are scabies, lice, tungiasis, and hookworm-induced cutaneous larva migrans. In recent years, bed bug infestations in hotels or vacation homes seem to have become more frequent. Demodex folliculorum and Demodex brevis are found in the facial and scalp hair follicles in 95% of individuals. Classic Demodex folliculitis is often overlooked in differential diagnostic considerations. This inflammatory sebaceous gland disease as well as Demodex blepharitis bo…
