Calcific aortic stenosis is the most common form of aortic stenosis, and offers a poor prognosis in affected patients. Current treatment methods for aortic stenosis, including open surgical aortic valve repair and transcatheter aortic valve replacement, are invasive, and require the patient to undergo open-heart surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass. Ultrasound therapy offers a potential solution for patients ineligible for traditional surgical treatment. Noninvasive ultrasound therapy allows for decalcification of aortic valves without open sternotomy or cardiopulmonary bypass. This article rev

BACKGROUND: Mechanical-based therapies are not yet recommended to manage osteoarthritis (OA). This systematic review and meta-analysis aim to assess the effects of passive mechanical-based therapies (isolated or combined with other therapies) on patients with knee OA compared to placebo, other isolated or combined interventions.
METHODS: Pubmed, Cochrane, Web of Science and EMBASE were searched up to December 2020. We included randomized and non-randomized trials using therapeutic ultrasound, phonophoresis, extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT) and vibration (single or combined with other t

The ultrasonic bone aspirator (UBA) allows for precision and provides ease of use in multiple steps of cosmetic and functional rhinoplasties. Its use has previously been described; however, since the publication of many studies the UBA has been improved and its applications for rhinoplasty have been modified and expanded. Both bony and cartilaginous modifications to the nose can be aided with the use of the UBA. From our experience, patient results have subjectively been found to be more acceptable, if not better, than with the use of other rhinoplasty instruments.

This article is the presentation I gave at the D'Arsonval Award Ceremony on June 14, 2011 at the Bioelectromagnetics Society Annual Meeting in Halifax, Nova Scotia. It summarizes my research activities in acoustic and electromagnetic millimeter waves over the past 47 years. My earliest research involved acoustic millimeter waves, with a special interest in diagnostic ultrasound imaging and its safety. For the last 21 years my research expanded to include electromagnetic millimeter waves, with a special interest in the mechanisms underlying millimeter wave therapy. Millimeter wave therapy has b

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the efficacy of multi-frequency focused ultrasound (MfFU) in the treatment of alveolar hydatid disease in mice.
METHODS: Thirty Kunming mice infected subcutaneously with alveolar protoscoleces were divided into 3 groups randomly of 10 mice each and irradiated with different intensity of MfFU. Mice in the experiment groups B and C were irradiated only once for 5 min and group A served as control. The irradiation power of the 3 transducers in the low-power group (group B) was 4 W + 4 W + 5 W; that in the high-power group (group C) was 10 W + 11 W + 10 W. After the irra

As an emerging therapeutic option for erectile dysfunction (ED), low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS) has attracted increasing attention. The therapeutic effect of LIPUS is comparable to low-intensity extracorporeal shockwave therapy. However, the underlying mechanism of LIPUS remains unclear. We summarized the current literature to assess the efficacy of LIPUS for ED and elucidate the biological effects caused by LIPUS in different ED models. Preliminary clinical studies demonstrate that LIPUS is beneficial for ED with varying degrees of severity, and its therapeutic effect can be enhanced

Diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN), as one of the most prevalent complications of diabetes, leads to significant pain and financial burden to patients. Currently, there was no effective treatment for DPN since the glucose control was just a prevention and the drug therapy only relieved the DPN pain. As a non-invasive physical therapy, low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS) is utilized in the musculoskeletal and nerve injuries therapy. Studies revealed that LIPUS could regenerate nerves by the mechanical stimulation via oxidative stress pathway, which was thought as the important factor for

Accelerating orthodontic tooth movement (OTM) is increasingly important for shorter treatment times, which reduces periodontal risks, root resorption and dental caries. Techniques to accelerate OTM focus on stimulating bone remodelling by enhancing osteoclast and osteoblast activity and include both surgical and non-surgical methods. The therapeutic potential of ultrasounds is highly recognized among many medical areas and has shown promising results in modulating bone remodelling and inflammation phenomena. This systematic review aims to collect and analyse the current scientific in vitro and

Aortic stenosis (AS) - a constantly progressing disease characterized by thickening and calcification of leaflets of the valve, which leads to obstruction of the blood outflow from the left ventricular (LV), inadequate cardiac output, heart failure, and even sudden death. Prevalence of stenosis consistently increases with age, 0.2% incidence observes in the 50-59 year cohort of patients and almost 10% in patients from the 80-89 year cohort. We report the case of a 78-year-old man who presented with severe aortic valve stenosis. Since conventional valve replacement was problematic because of a

The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS) in preventing joint stiffness. Unilateral knee joints were immobilized in two groups of rats (n = 6/period/group). Under general anesthesia, the immobilized knee joints were exposed to LIPUS for 20 min/d, 5 d/wk, using an existing LIPUS device (LIPUS group, 1.5-MHz frequency, 1.0-kHz repetition cycle, 200-µs burst width and 30-mW/cm2 power output) until endpoints (2, 4 or 6 wk). In the control group, general anesthesia alone was administered in the same manner as in the other group. The variables com

Low-intensity focused ultrasound (LIFU) is emerging as a promising non-invasive tool for neuromodulation, with the potential to reach deep brain structures implicated in psychiatric and neurodegenerative disorders. Despite its rapid development, the translation of LIFU into reliable clinical applications remains limited by incomplete understanding of its mechanisms, variability in outcomes, and technical constraints. This review integrates neurobiological and engineering perspectives to clarify how LIFU interacts with neural and glial systems and how physical factors shape its efficacy. Eviden

INTRODUCTION: Deep brain stimulation (DBS) and focused ultrasound (FUS) are established interventions for medically refractory essential tremor (ET), traditionally targeting the ventral intermediate (Vim) nucleus of the thalamus. Emerging targets such as the dentato-rubro-thalamic tract (DRTT), cerebello-thalamic tract (CTT), and posterior subthalamic (PSA) area offer potential therapeutic advantages.
AREAS COVERED: DBS, with decades of use, offers adjustable, reversible, and often bilateral tremor control through implanted electrodes. FUS is a newer, incisionless MRI-guided technique deliver

BACKGROUND: Transcranial ultrasound stimulation (TUS) enables non-invasive neuromodulation of cortical and subcortical brain regions. Technological advances have facilitated rapid expansion of the field in recent years. However, the overall scope, methodological trends, and reporting practices of human TUS research remain unclear.
OBJECTIVE: To characterize the global landscape of registered clinical trials using TUS for neuromodulation, including their design features, indications, targets, device platforms, and dissemination.
METHODS: A systematic search of major international registries (

BACKGROUND: Neuropathic pain is a complex condition that can be challenging to manage, despite the availability of a variety of pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic treatment approaches. This narrative review aimed to synthesize preclinical evidence on the therapeutic effects and underlying mechanisms of focused ultrasound (FUS) in neuropathic pain models.
METHODS: We conducted a narrative literature search using PubMed to identify preclinical studies investigating the use of FUS in the context of neuropathic pain. Studies were retrieved from PubMed using keyword combinations "focused ultrasou
