Comparison of ultrasonography and intravenous urography in the screening and diagnosis of hematuria causes.

INTRODUCTION: Our aim was to compare transabdominal ultrasonography (US) and intravenous urography (IVU) in the evaluation of patients with hematuria. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Two hundred patients with hematuria were assessed by US and IVU, and if needed, by cystoscopy, ureteroscopy, and CT scan, to determine the definite cause of hematuria. The results of US and IVU were compared according to the definite diagnoses. RESULTS: Of 97 patients with microscopic hematuria, 44 (45%) had a documented cause for hematuria, and of 103 patients with gross hematuria, 76 (74%) had a definite disorder (P <

Pediatric urinary tract reconstruction using intestine.

OBJECTIVE: To analyse the outcome of urinary tract reconstruction in children. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Fifteen children with bladder exstrophy or neurogenic bladder, 4-18 years old, were followed in accordance with a predetermined program for bladder augmentation (13 pat) or continent urinary reservoir (2 pat). The follow-up time was 1.7-6.3 years, median 3.7 years. RESULTS: All were dry, though one case had occasional leaks. Three bladder neck reconstructions, two artificial sphincters, one sling plasty and one fistula closure with subsequent bladder neck injection were required. Bladder volu

Bladder multilithiasis across different clinical scenarios: Multimodality imaging findings, differential diagnosis, and complication assessment in 4 patients.

Bladder calculi are an uncommon form of urolithiasis in developed countries and are usually associated with urinary stasis, bladder outlet obstruction, chronic catheterization, recurrent urinary tract infections, and neurogenic bladder dysfunction. Although their diagnosis is often straightforward, bladder multilithiasis may present across heterogeneous clinical scenarios, ranging from uncomplicated intravesical stones to advanced neglected disease with obstructive complications. Imaging may also be relevant for differential diagnosis when intravesical calcified lesions or bladder wall calcifi

Laparoscopic augmentation cystoplasty using the novel biomaterial Surgisis: small-intestinal submucosa.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Urinary bladder augmentation is indicated for diverse conditions, including neurogenic bladder, cancer resection, spinal cord injury, and congenital anomalies. The ideal cystoplasty material is yet to be described. Native gastrointestinal segments commonly used are limited by leakage and small-bowel obstruction, metabolic/nutritional abnormalities, calculi, and malignancy. This study assessed laparoscopic bladder augmentation with porcine small intestinal submucosa (SIS). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Five female pigs (<25 kg) were prepared for surgery under general anesthesi

Additional surgery in patients with bladder augmentation.

INTRODUCTION: Bladder augmentation is an option to protect kidneys and treat incontinence in frequent neurogenic and congenital non-neurogenic disorders. However, patients may need also other procedures to treat incontinence or to aid catheterizations. In addition, the patients are prone to complications. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate complications or additional surgeries in augmentation cystoplasty according to the etiology of the bladder dysfunction. STUDY DESIGN: Data on additional surgical procedures related to bladder augmentation were collected from 128 patients who had undergone enterocystop

Renal, vesical, and prostatic calculi associated with ochronosis.

A case report of a patient with ochronosis and simultaneously occurring renal, vesical, and prostatic calculi is presented. Literature review suggests an increased incidence of urinary calculi in this syndrome, yet stone composition in such cases is not remarkable.

Clinics in diagnostic imaging (136). Chronic Schistosoma japonica infection of the liver.

A 37-year-old man from China was initially seen at the urology clinic for symptoms of urinary colic. Plain computed tomography (CT) imaging of the kidneys, ureters and bladder was performed, which (in addition to demonstrating renal calculi) revealed incidental findings of 'turtleback' septal and capsular calcifications, features pathognomonic for schistosomiasis japonica. Other classical features were demonstrated on the triphasic hepatic CT imaging that was subsequently performed. The clinical course, radiological features and complications of schistosomiasis japonica are discussed.

The history of kidney stone dissolution therapy: 50 years of optimism and frustration with renacidin.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Over the last 50 years, chemolysis as a primary or adjuvant treatment for urinary stones has fallen in and out of favor. We review the literature for a historical perspective on the origins and chronology of Renacidin therapy, focusing on landmark studies and impracticalities that have seemingly condemned it to history. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A MEDLINE search was performed on the topic of chemolysis of urinary calculi. Historical literature was reviewed with regard to stone composition, treatment modalities, outcomes, and complications. RESULTS: A total of 61 articles

Uroliths composed of antiviral compound GS-441524 in 2 cats undergoing treatment for feline infectious peritonitis.

Feline infectious peritonitis (FIP) historically has been a fatal disease in cats. Recent unlicensed use of antiviral medication has been shown to markedly improve survival of this infection. An 8-month-old female spayed domestic short-haired cat undergoing treatment for presumptive FIP with the antiviral nucleoside analog GS-441524 developed acute progressive azotemia. Abdominal ultrasound examination identified multifocal urolithiasis including renal, ureteral, and cystic calculi. Unilateral ureteral obstruction progressed to suspected bilateral ureteral obstruction and subcutaneous ureteral

Delayed ileal neobladder fistula caused by bladder stones: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Ileal neobladder fistula is a rare complication after radical cystectomy, with an incidence of approximately 0.7%. At present, there are scattered reports of vesicoileal fistula, but there are no reports of ileal neobladder fistula (INF) caused by bladder stones. In this paper, a case of ileal neobladder fistula caused by chronic stimulation of bladder stones was successfully diagnosed and treated. CASE PRESENTATION: A 68-year-old man who had undergone radical cystectomy and an orthotopic ileal neobladder procedure 10 years prior presented with refractory diarrhoea and oliguria an

Catheter-less suprapubic cystolithotomy in children.

Bladder stones in children are common in developing countries and the procedure of choice for their removal is suprapubic cystolithotomy. It is standard practice to drain the bladder for a few days post-operatively to prevent urinary leakage. We have observed that, if the bladder is closed meticulously in 2 layers, bladder drainage by means of a catheter is not required. We have analysed 86 children treated by suprapubic cystolithotomy without a catheter. Size of the stones and intra-operative findings were noted and it was found that 85% of the patients had an excellent result; 10% had a sati
