Radical cystectomy in bladder cancer patients previously treated for prostate cancer: Insights from a large European multicentric series.

INTRODUCTION: Previous radical prostatectomy (RP) for prostate cancer (PCa) might impair feasibility of radical cystectomy (RC) for bladder cancer (BCa). The current study addressed morbidity, operative time (OT), and length of stay (LOS) of RC, within the largest available series of patients with history of previous RP. MATERIALS AND METHODS: All patients previously submitted to RP for PCa and subsequently submitted to RC for BCa, at six high-volume European institutions between 2010 and 2019, were identified. Presence of either PCa or BCa metastases, RT as primary treatment for PCa, and pal

Exploring the Relationship between CLPTM1L-MS2 Variants and Susceptibility to Bladder Cancer.

CLPTM1L (Cleft Lip and Palate Transmembrane Protein 1-Like) has previously been implicated in tumorigenesis and drug resistance in cancer. However, the genetic link between CLPTM1L and bladder cancer remains uncertain. In this study, we investigated the genetic association of variable number of tandem repeats (VNTR; minisatellites, MS) regions within CLPTM1L with bladder cancer. We identified four CLPTM1L-MS regions (MS1~MS4) located in intron regions. To evaluate the VNTR polymorphic alleles, we analyzed 441 cancer-free controls and 181 bladder cancer patients. Our analysis revealed a higher

Successful laparoscopic transabdominal preperitoneal repair of recurrent inguinal hernia of the bladder following bilayer mesh use: A case report.

INTRODUCTION: The effectiveness of laparoscopic repair for recurrent inguinal hernias has been previously reported; however, recurrence following bilayer mesh use has rarely been reported. We report a case of successful total laparoscopic repair of a recurrent inguinal hernia of the bladder in which a bilayer mesh was used for the initial direct inguinal hernia. PRESENTATION OF CASE: An 80-year-old man underwent hernia repair using a bilayer mesh for a right direct hernia 12 years ago. Computed tomography revealed a malignant neoplasm of the pancreas and an asymptomatic recurrence of a right

Listening to the bladder field: Urine liquid biopsies reveal differential treatment responses in NMIBC.

In this issue of Cell, Shi and colleagues introduce a urine-based liquid biopsy approach that reshapes how treatment response in NMIBC is assessed. They use urine tumor DNA to detect minimal residual disease and disentangle the contributions of surgery and immunotherapy to disease control, with implications extending beyond bladder cancer.

Novel Therapies for High-Risk Non-Muscle Invasive Bladder Cancer.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The treatment options for high-risk non-muscle invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC), particularly following BCG, remain limited. We highlight recent, promising therapies for high-risk NMIBC. RECENT FINDINGS: Several therapies utilizing different mechanisms of action have demonstrated favorable results in the BCG-naïve and BCG-unresponsive settings. These treatments include intravenous and intravesical immunotherapy, viral- and bacterial-based intravesical therapies, combination intravesical chemotherapy regimens, and novel intravesical chemotherapy administration. Overall, the e

Cystectomy for Benign Indications.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This article evaluates the historical influences, current use, surgical techniques, and recent evidence on outcomes for cystectomy performed for benign indications. RECENT FINDINGS: At the population level, cystectomy for benign indications has similar perioperative morbidity to radical cystectomy for cancer. Postoperative patient satisfaction is high and functional outcomes appear good, including sexual function. Patient regret about diversion choice is low provided decisions are well informed. Cystectomy is important both as a primary procedure for benign disease and as a

Bladder papilloma: A rare benign tumor - Case report and literature review.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Bladder papilloma, a rare benign tumor of the urinary tract, accounts for 1-4 % of bladder tumors. Its distinct features, diagnosed through light microscopy, include architectural and cytological characteristics. Despite its rarity, bladder papilloma is clinically significant due to its distinct traits, low recurrence risk, and potential progression to other urothelial neoplasms. Understanding this condition is crucial for early diagnosis and optimal patient care. CASE PRESENTATION: A 66-year-old male with benign prostatic hyperplasia presented with one month of i

[Interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome (IC/BPS)].

BACKGROUND: In this review, aspects of interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome (IC/BPS) are presented against the background of the German S2k guideline on this disease. OBJECTIVE: Quite often this disease, characterized by bladder or lower abdominal pain (permanent or intermittent) and pollakisuria without pathogenic bacteria in the urine culture, is diagnosed much too late. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The debate on disease definition, aspects on pathophysiology and epidemiology are presented. For diagnosis, disease severity must be determined and relevant differential diagnoses like bladder

Ileal neobladder adenocarcinoma occurring twenty-five years post ileocystoplasty: a case report.

De-tubularised ileum is one of the most common segments used for augmentation cystoplasty. It is associated with complications such as metabolic disturbances, recurrent urinary tract infections, and stone formation. However, adenocarcinoma arising in an augmented bladder is a rare occurrence. We report a 37-year-old female, case of ileocystoplasty 25 years ago due to a thimble bladder (genitourinary tuberculosis) who presented with hematuria for one month. Cystoscopy showed bladder mass in the transposed ileal segments. The patient underwent transurethral resection of the bladder lesion, and t

Bladder triangle amyloidosis: A case report and literature review.

RATIONALE: Amyloidosis is a group of benign lesions characterized by extracellular deposition of amyloid proteins. Amyloidosis lesions can occur in various organs of the body, but rarely in the urinary system. Amyloidosis in the bladder trigone is extremely rare. PATIENT CONCERNS: An 80-year-old female patient presented with painless whole-course gross hematuria with reddish urine and no blood clots, accompanied by right lumbar discomfort. DIAGNOSIS: Based on the patient's medical history and cystoscopy findings, the relevant literature was reviewed and a preoperative diagnosis of bladder tu

Unusual presentation of a dermoid cyst that derived from the bladder dome presenting as subserosal leiomyoma uteri.

BACKGROUND: Dermoid cysts are benign neoplasms deriving from ectoderm and mesoderm and can be found in a variety of locations. Uterine leiomyomas are benign tumors that grow within the muscle tissue of the uterus. Only a few cases have been reported and cited in the literature on dermoid cysts of the urinary bladder, and can be confused with urogenital masses. This paper reports the first case of a dermoid cyst deriving from the bladder dome presenting as subserosal uterine leiomyoma. CASE: A 44-year-old woman was admitted with a history of chronic pelvic pain. After gynecological examination

Intrabiliary growth of metastatic colonic adenocarcinoma: a pattern of intrahepatic spread easily confused with primary neoplasia of the biliary tract.

Because of its propensity to spread along epithelial surfaces, colonic adenocarcinoma can mimic other neoplasms. For example, colonic adenocarcinoma can grow along the surface of the urinary bladder and can simulate primary bladder neoplasia, and metastatic colonic adenocarcinoma can grow along alveolar walls and can mimic primary lung neoplasia. Intraepithelial spread along bile ducts, however, is not a well-recognized behavior of hepatic metastases. Indeed, dysplastic change in the epithelium lining the biliary tract is sometimes used to discriminate primary biliary neoplasms from metastatic

Ultrasound Findings in Endosalpingiosis: A Closer Look at an Overlooked Condition.

Endosalpingiosis is a rare, benign condition characterized by ectopic cystic glands lined with ciliated cuboidal epithelium, histologically resembling the fallopian tube. Its etiology remains uncertain but is hypothesized to result from either ectopic implantation of fallopian tube tissue or metaplastic transformation of multipotential peritoneal cells. While frequently misdiagnosed as endometriosis, endosalpingiosis coexists with endometriosis in ~35% to 40% of cases. The condition can affect both women of reproductive age and postmenopausal individuals, with a median age of diagnosis between

Successful management of a high-output urinary fistula following radical cystectomy and ileal conduit: a conservative approach.

Urinary leak following ileal conduit after a radical cystectomy is a rare yet serious complication which presents early in the postoperative period. We herein present a case of a 38-year-old man diagnosed with recurrent high-grade non-muscle invasive bladder carcinoma. He underwent robot-assisted radical cystectomy and bilateral pelvic lymph node dissection. Postoperatively, the patient developed a high output urinary fistula (800-1000 mL/day) which was confirmed by fluid creatinine levels and a contrast study. He was managed successfully with a conservative approach. The leak subsided in 6 we

Successful treatment of rare case of rhabdomyosarcoma of urinary bladder in adult, experience from tertiary hospital. Case report.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Rhabdomyosarcoma [RMS] is a malignant soft-tissue neoplasm characterized by skeletal muscle differentiation. It accounts for 7 % of childhood malignancies and is, by a wide margin, the most common sarcoma of childhood (Pappo, 1996). Approximately 20 % of cases of childhood rhabdomyosarcoma occur in the genitourinary tract (vagina, urinary bladder, prostate, paratestis, and uterus), and they are most commonly observed in the head and neck region. CASE PRESENTATION: We reviewed the case of a 42-year-old male who presented with a 2-week history of blood in the urine,
