Renal calculi and biochemical abnormalities. In children with myelomeningocele and heoconduit diversion.

Of 38 pediatric cases of ileoconduit urinary diversion of myelomeningocele, 4 with renal calculi are presented. An increased risk of renal calculus formation may be imposed on children with myelomeningocele with ileoconduit urinary diversion especially so in functionally and anatomically abnormal kidneys and in chronic renal infection with urea-splitting bacteria. It is not clear why the ileoconduit procedure should increase the incidence of renal calculi in such children.

Extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy in childhood.

Extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy is the treatment of choice for the majority of upper urinary calculi in adults. Technical limitations, including patient size and concerns over post-treatment stone fragment passage, have made the application of extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy in children less clearly defined. We report the successful application of the Dornier lithotriptor in the management of 18 children (22 kidneys) with upper urinary calculi.

Symptomatic multiple prostatic calculi: A case report and literature review.

Prostatic calculi are often found incidentally during a clinical and radiological examination. However, in some instances, large or multiple calculi may cause severe lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS). Its current significance concerning urological diseases and symptoms remains obscure. Minimal awareness regarding the disease among physicians could lead to improper assessment and treatment. In Indonesia, reports regarding prostatic calculi are still limited. We report a 50-year-old male with symptomatic multiple prostatic calculi.

Recurrence of infected calculi following postoperative renal irrigation with stone solvent.

Renacidin has been shown to dissolve small fragments of infected renal calculi in vitro. 34 patients with infected calculi have undergone pyelolithotomy and postoperative renal irrigation with Renacidin. 30 patients were women and Proteus was the commonest infecting organism. Renal irrigation appears to be safe if closely monitored and covered by antibiotic therapy. 24.4% of calculi had recurred at a mean follow-up of 42 months. The rate of recurrence or unilateral calculi was much less than that of bilateral calculi (15% vs. 40%). Persistent postoperative urinary tract infections later led to

A clinical study of percutaneous nephroureterolithotripsy.

Percutaneous nephroureterolithotripsy was performed a total of 309 times in 225 renal units of 209 patients with upper urinary tract calculi, a mean of 1.37 times per kidney. Residual calculi, 5 mm or greater in diameter, were observed in 3 of 100 kidneys (3%) with single calculi, 12 of 102 kidneys (11.8%) with multiple calculi, and 8 of 23 kidneys (34.8%) with staghorn calculi. The number of sessions, duration of nephrostomy, and the frequency of residual calculi were significantly higher in problem calculi, such as multiple, large and staghorn calculi, than in other calculus types. A combina

Hanging bladder stone due to misplaced surgical suture several years after hysterectomy: A case report.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Urinary bladder calculi are rarely seen in women and any history of previous pelvic surgery must, therefore, raise suspicion of an iatrogenic etiology. The incidence of iatrogenic foreign bodies rise recently due to increasing number of surgical procedure. According to the literature, fewer than 2% of all bladder calculi occur in female subjects and, thus, their presence should provoke careful assessment of the etiology. There have been a number of reports on bladder calculi in women with a history of gynecologic procedures. We report a case of bladder calculus aft

Struvite Urolithiasis in Long-Evans Rats.

Struvite urinary calculi, which are composed of magnesium, ammonium, and phosphate, can cause complications including sepsis and renal failure. Struvite calculi were identified within the urinary bladder and renal pelvis of 2 Long-Evans rats that died within days after arrival from a commercial vendor. The remaining rats in the shipment were screened by physical examination, radiography, and ultrasonography, revealing an additional 2 animals that were clinically affected. These rats were euthanized, necropsied, and yielded similar findings to those from the first 2 rats. In addition, urine sam…

Recurrent bilateral renal calculi in a tetraplegic patient.

An 18-year-old male developed C-5 complete tetraplegia following a motor-cycle accident in May 1975. The neuropathic bladder was managed by an indwelling urethral catheter. He developed recurrent episodes of urinary infection with Proteus species. In September 1975, an X-ray of the abdomen revealed small calculi in both the kidneys. In July 1976, he underwent transurethral resection of the bladder neck and division of the external urethral sphincter; subsequently, he was put on a penile sheath drainage. He continued to suffer from repeated episodes of urinary tract infection with Proteus, Prov

Evolution of post-ESWL residual lithiasis depending on the type of calculus and urine composition.

OBJECTIVES: Extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) is one of the most commonly used procedures for removal of renal calculi from the upper urinary tract, but complete expulsion of the fragments generated is not always achieved. This can lead to new lithiasic episodes, and it is considered that 10-26% of fragmented calculi can undergo regrowth. This in vitro study investigated the influence of fragment and urinary composition on post-ESWL growth of fragments, with the aims of establishing the effect and importance of these parameters, and identifying effective prophylactic measures. Cystinuria in a cat.

A 10-month-old male Siamese cat with dysuria was determined to have cystine crystalluria. Many small calculi composed entirely of cystine were found in the urinary bladder. Measurement of serum and urine amino acids and calculation of fractional reabsorption of amino acids indicated reabsorption defects for cystine, ornithine, lysine, and arginine. Urinary acidification, fractional reabsorption of glucose, and fractional reabsorption of electrolytes were normal. Diagnoses of cystinuria and cystine urolithiasis were made on the basis of low fractional reabsorption of cystine and dibasic amino a

[Minimally invasive endourological management of urinay tract calculi in children].

BACKGROUND: The urinary tract calculi in children is a very unfrequent problem in the pediatric age group. Endourology plays a major role in pediatric surgery. We reported our experience in endoscopic management of pediatric calculi. METHODS: Eighteen children (age range: 2 year-19 years) underwent endourology procedures for extraction of urinary tract lithiasis in the period from 1992 until 2006. We reviewed retrospectively the following features: calculi size, location, procedures, surgical complications, recurrent, results and time of follow-up. RESULTS: Twenty-one endourolgy procedures w

Urethral Steinstrasse following Laser Lithotripsy of Prostatic Urethral Calculi.

Symptomatic prostatic calculi are rare occurrences with several management options, the most popular of which is currently transurethral laser lithotripsy. This is a generally well-tolerated procedure with minimal complications. To date, no reported episodes of steinstrasse at the urethral level following prostatic calculi lithotripsy have been documented to our knowledge. We report a unique case of acute urinary retention secondary to obstructive calculi fragments following a transurethral laser lithotripsy of large prostatic calculi, further complicated by stricture at the fossa navicularis.

An overlooked complication of the clean intermittent catheters: prostate calculi.

OBJECTIVE: Although the clinical importance of prostate calculi has been understood over time, it is a urinary system disease that can cause different symptoms and can be ignored by urologists sometime. Clean intermittent catheter (CIC) is the gold standard method for bladder rehabilitation and urinary drainage in patients with neurogenic bladder. The aim of this study was to compare the incidence of prostate calculi and related pathologies between patients using CIC and not using CIC. MATERIAL-METHOD: A total of 314 neurogenic bladder patients who were followed up and treated in our urology

Abnormal calcifications in the urinary tract.

A wide variety of calcifications may develop in the urinary tract. Calculi, the most common form of urinary tract calcification, are usually radiopaque due to their calcium content, whereas cystine stones tend to be less opaque. In cortical nephrocalcinosis, calcification may be spotty or may appear as a thin rim outlining the cortex. Intracystic calcification is usually thin and peripheral and is often described as having an "eggshell" appearance. In renal masses, pure central calcification usually indicates malignancy, although malignancy may also be present with pure peripheral calcificatio

[Obstructive uropathy in adults].

Urinary tract obstruction is a common clinical problem. The obstruction of the urinary flow may be acute or chronic, partial or complete, unilateral or bilateral, and may occur at any site of the urinary tract. The major causes of urinary tract obstruction vary with the age of the patient. Anatomic abnormalities, e. g. ureteropelvic junction obstruction, account for the majority of cases in children. In comparison, calculi are most common in young adults, while prostatic hyperplasia or carcinoma, retroperitoneal or pelvic neoplasms, and calculi are the primary causes in older patients. Urinary

Drug-Induced Kidney Stones and Crystalline Nephropathy: Pathophysiology, Prevention and Treatment.

Drug-induced calculi represent 1-2% of all renal calculi. The drugs reported to produce calculi may be divided into two groups. The first on … biopsy is of major diagnostic value. The second group includes drugs that provoke the formation of urinary calculi as a consequence of their metabolic effects on urinary pH and/or the excretion of calcium, phosphate, oxalate, citrate, uric acid or other purines. Among such metabolically induced calculi are those formed in patients taking uncontrolled calcium/vit …
