The effect of repeated instillations of antiseptics on catheter-associated urinary tract infections: a study in a physical model of the catheterized bladder.

The activity of three antiseptic bladder washout solutions was examined in a physical model of the catheterized bladder. Tests were performed against cultures of four common urinary tract pathogens that had established themselves in the model and colonized the surfaces with biofilm. Double instillations of chlorhexidine (0.02% w/v) at 6-h intervals failed to eliminate Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Proteus mirabilis, and Providencia stuartii from the bladder model. Escherichia coli, however, was susceptible to a second instillation provided that it was performed within 12 h. Supplementing chlorhexidi

Effect of Nurse-Led Clean Intermittent Catheterization Synchronous Health Education on Patients with Urinary Dysfunction after Spinal Cord Injury.

OBJECTIVE: Spinal cord injury (SCI) severely affects motor, sensory, reflex, and other functions, impacting 250,000 to 500,000 individuals globally each year. Bladder voiding dysfunction, a prevalent and serious complication of SCI, results in significant morbidity and reduced quality of life. This study examines the impact of nurse-led clean intermittent catheterization combined with synchronous health education for family members on improving compliance in patients with SCI and bladder voiding dysfunction. METHODS: Eighty-four patients with urinary dysfunction post-SCI treated in our hospit

A prospective randomized trial comparing transurethral prostatic resection and clean intermittent self-catheterization in men with chronic urinary retention.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether a preliminary period of clean intermittent self-catheterization (CISC) before transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) improves bladder contractility and surgical outcome in men with chronic urinary retention (CUR), and whether pressure-flow studies (PFS) before TURP predict the outcome. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The study was a two-centre, pragmatic and randomized trial. Included were 41 men scheduled for TURP with lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS), an International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS) of > 7, benign prostatic enlargement and a persistent postvoi

Urinary catheterization in care homes for older people: self-reported questionnaire audit of catheter management by care home staff.

A self-administered questionnaire was used to determine care home staff's reported knowledge of the urinary catheter care standards published by the National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) and the Association of Continence Care, and to see whether this differed in homes with higher catheterization rates. Seven hundred and fifty out of 1438 (52%) nursing and care staff from 37 randomly selected care homes with high, medium and low catheterization rates responded. There was no difference in reported practice in care homes in the three health districts sampled or those with differing ca

A Comparison of Bladder Catheterization and Suprapubic Aspiration Methods for Urine Sample Collection From Infants With a Suspected Urinary Tract Infection.

This study compares 2 sampling methods for urine cultures in young infants. We analyzed data on urine samples obtained from 83 infants using 2 sources of urine: suprapubic bladder aspiration (SPA) and bladder catheterization. All specimens were subjected to both urinalysis and culture, and the results compared. Eighty-three infants with positive urine culture results obtained by bladder catheterization were subjected to SPA. Of these, only 24 (28.9%) and 20 (24%) yielded positive urine culture and abnormal urinalysis data, respectively. Samples obtained via catheterization had a high false-pos

[Decrease of urinary tract infections following catheterization after the education of health care workers, introduction of protocols and surveillance lists].

Urinary tract infections (UTI) following catheterization are the most common hospital-acquired infections, with their frequency amounting to 30-40% of all hospital infections. Major percentage of this kind of infectious episodes can be prevented via active and continual education of health care workers (HCW), implementation of transparent protocols concerning installation and attendance of urinary catheters and regular control of catheterized patients through surveillance lists. This research shows the importance of a fore-mentioned activities, demonstrating a significant decrease of UTI follo

Urinary Tract Infection in Neurologic Patients Undergoing Intermittent Catheterization: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Catheter Type and Technique.

Intermittent urinary catheterization (IUC) is one of the recommended methods for bladder emptying in patients with bladder disorders. To our knowledge, no meta-analysis has yet evaluated the risk of urinary tract infections (UTIs) in adult neurological patients according to the type of catheter and IUC method. To address this knowledge gap, a systematic review of the literature was conducted using the PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Trials CENTRAL databases, according to Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) recommendations. We included randomized clinical tr

A less invasive catheterization protocol for managing urinary retention in patients undergoing hip and knee arthroplasty: A prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Postoperative urinary retention is a frequently seen serious complication after surgery. After orthopaedic hip or knee arthroplasty the incidence is relatively high, between 30 and 50% in previous studies. Currently, there is no consensus on the indication for urinary catheterization and a uniform guideline is lacking. This prospective cohort study examined the safety of a modified catheterization protocol with a catheterization threshold of 800 ml instead of 400 ml (usual care) after elective joint arthroplasty using ultrasound bladder scans. The hypothesis was that the incidence
