Sudden cardiac death (SCD) in adolescents is rare and often attributed to previously undiagnosed cardiac conditions, including genetic cardiomyopathies, congenital anomalies, conduction disorders, or thrombotic events. In atypical cases, intracardiac or vascular thromboembolism may resemble vegetations, posing a diagnostic challenge during postmortem evaluation. Syphilis is a re-emerging disease, and suspicion of syphilis infection should be considered in all cases with atypical skin manifestations, mainly when there is a history of unprotected sexual intercourse. Here, we describe a case of secondary syphilis in a woman aged 42 years, who presented with an atypical, painful and itchy skin rash with vegetative cerebriform lesions, which resolved after the administration of penicillin. Multiplex PCR targeting Treponema pallidum on vaginal and lesion swabs, along with syphilis serology, confirmed the diagnosis.

Cannabis-fruit and vegetable syndrome is of recent discovery and linked to lipid transfer protein (LTP) sensitization. It is thought that the primary sensitization originates from the cannabis LTP (Can s 3). Sensitized patients can cross-react to others LTP homologs such as peach LTP (Pru p 3). Diagnosis may be challenging, as consumption of cannabis is often omitted by the patient and needs to be specifically addressed during the interview. Thus, meticulous history taking is mandatory. Laboratory workup includes LTP-specific IgE and skin testing. Management relies on allergen eviction.

The purpose of the present study was to analyze the microbiological profile of cases of keratitis following trauma with vegetative matter in a tertiary care center. A retrospective review of the medical records of 49 patients with keratitis following vegetative matter injury over a 3-month period was performed. Cunninghamella bertholletiae is a rare Mucor species that is seldom the cause for endocarditis of prosthetic heart valves. It is even a more uncommon cause of endocarditis of native heart valves. We present a case of Cunninghamella endocarditis of a native aortic valve in an immuno-compromised patient, diagnosed from tissue culture obtained at the time of surgery. There have only been two other reported cases of native valve endocarditis with a Mucor species, and in those cases, the diagnoses were made post-mortem.

To evaluate perinatal factors of risk to develop adenoid vegetations in childhood, 600 children were examined. Their perinatal period and health in the first year of life were investigated. 400 examinees aged 2-12 years had adenoids of the second-third degree. 200 children aged 13-14 had no history of the lymphadenoid pharyngeal ring. The degree of the studied factors impact on development of pharyngeal tonsil affection was estimated using the unifactor dispersion analysis.
