The original and second editions of the California Verbal Learning Test (CVLT) used nonparametric and parametric methods, respectively, to assess Total Recognition Discriminability (RD). In a previous study, we found evidence that the nonparametric formula may be more sensitive than the parametric formula to high false positive (FP) rates and provide more accurate assessments of yes/no recognition in neurodegenerative populations prone to high FP rates, including Alzheimer's disease (AD). In the present study, we extended our investigation to examine the utility of CVLT-3 nonparametric and par…

PURPOSE: Orthographic facilitation describes the phenomenon in which a spoken word is produced more accurately when its corresponding written word is present during learning. We examined the orthographic facilitation effect in children with dyslexia because they have poor learning and recall of spoken words. We hypothesized that including orthography during spoken word learning would facilitate learning and recall.
METHOD: Children with dyslexia and children with typical development (n = 46 per group), 7-9 years old, were matched for grade and nonverbal intelligence. Across 4 blocks of exposu

Outcomes of two training programs aimed at improving reading speed for 39 German-speaking poor readers in grades 2 and 4 were evaluated. During a 6-week training period, a specific target for children in a computer group was to improve reading of word-initial consonant clusters by practice in associating an orthographic unit with a corresponding phonological unit. Children in a paired reading group read books with an adult tutor. The results showed that, in reading words in which the computer-trained sublexical items were included, both groups exhibited similar improvement. A post hoc analysis

In this article the general and specific cognitive impairments of the boy R.H. with a de novo deletion 22q11.2 are described. His full-scale IQ was 73, and he obtained only slightly better verbal than non-verbal subtest scores. Neuropsychological assessment revealed specific impairments in perceptual categorization of objects presented suboptimal, matching of unfamiliar faces, and verbal learning and memory. In contrast, he performed in accordance with his intelligence level on other visual perceptual tasks, on non-verbal learning and memory tasks, and on attention tasks. Voxel-wise statistica…

UNLABELLED: Mutations in the CRB1 gene are associated with a diverse spectrum of retinopathies with phenotypic variability causing severe visual impairment. The CRB1 gene has a role in retinal development and is expressed in the cerebral cortex and hippocampus, but its role in cognition has not been described before. This study compares cognitive function in CRB1 retinopathy individuals with subjects with other retinopathies and the normal population.
METHODS: Neuropsychological tests of cognitive function were used to test individuals with CRB1 and non-CRB1 retinopathies and compare results

INTRODUCTION: Apart from chronic motor disorder and the possible sensory deficits (visual, propioception) associated to periventricular leuk … ropsychological profile of the diplegic children who were studied shares the characteristics of non verbal learning disorder. The declarative memory disorder observed in several of the subjects in our sample, who were all born premature and below weight, can be accounted for by a bihippocampal pathology or by a dysexecutive disorder.

Working memory refers to the systems responsible for the temporary storage and manipulation of information during the performance of cognitive tasks. There is a good deal of evidence that verbal short-term memory functions as a working memory system. We review advances in our understanding of the nature and limitations of verbal short-term memory and the reasons for its development with age, and go on to consider the common association between impairments of verbal short-term memory and other impairments of cognitive development. We conclude by considering the relationship between short-term m

OBJECTIVE: The present article provides an overview of the main approaches in the current literature on the neurobiological correlates of developmental dyslexia.
METHODS: Approximately 120 articles, published mainly within the past six years, were analyzed.
RESULTS: Three topics are of focal interest: first, the point of unusual asymmetries of the temporal plana and deviations of the corpus callosum; second, the analysis of abnormal patterns of activation of the left hemispherical frontal and temporal lobes. In this context, a dysfunction of the angular gyrus is discussed. The third approach

OBJECTIVE: Adopting an external focus of attention has been shown to benefit motor performance and learning. However, the potential of optimizing attentional focus for improving prosthetic motor skills in lower limb prosthesis (LLP) users has not been examined. In this study, we investigated the frequency and direction of attentional focus embedded in the verbal instructions in a clinical prosthetic training setting.
METHODS: Twenty-one adult LLP users (8 female, 13 male; 85% at K3 level; mean age = 50.5) were recruited from prosthetic clinics in the Southern Nevada region. Verbal interaction

Formal neuropsychological evaluation in patient with transient global amnesia (TGA) associated with migraine was performed 6 days and 17 months after the episode. Verbal learning difficulties and verbal IQ deficit were observed in line with the neuropsychological profile seen in the follow-up of TGA. A common origin for the TGA-Migraine episode and isolated TGA is discussed.

Cognitive deficits have an important role in the neurodevelopment of schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders. However, there is a contin … evealed that there were significant overall group differences (CHR, EFEP, HSC) in processing speed, verbal learning, and overall neurocognition, relative to healthy controls (CNTL). In addition, the CHR-NTs performed similarly to the HSC group, with mild to moderate cognitive deficits relative to the CTRL group. The CHR-Ts mirrored the EFEP group, with large defi …

Neuropsychological studies in myasthenia gravis (MG) were undertaken to prove the central nervous involvement. However, they still produce contradictory results. In the present study, a battery of cognitive measures was administered to examine global cognitive functioning, verbal learning, attention, executive function and motor performance. Analysis of partial scores in verbal learning and response fluency trials did not reveal fatigue effect in MG patients. It was shown that in tasks requiring motor, and particularly oculomotor, involvement, the muscle fatigue could account for the deficits …

BACKGROUND: To compare the cognitive profile of older patients with schizophrenia to those with other neuropsychiatric disorders assessed in a hospital-based memory clinic.
METHODS: Demographic, clinical, and cognitive data of all patients referred to the memory clinic at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health between April 1, 2006 and August 15, 2008 were reviewed. We then identified four groups of older patients with: (1) late-life schizophrenia (LLS) and no dementia or depression (DEP); (2) Alzheimer's disease (AD); (3) DEP and no dementia or LLS; (4) normal cognition (NC) and no DEP o

This experiment tested hypotheses linking the right cerebral regulation of hostility and affective verbal learning. First, patterns of recall for positive, negative, and neutral affective list learning among high- and low-hostile individuals were examined. It was expected that low-hostiles would recall more items from the positive list and that high-hostiles would recall more words from the negative affective list. Also, independent of groups, it was expected that there would be a primacy effect for negative words and a recency effect for positive words. Exploratory analyses examined the relat…

Recent neuropathological and neuroimaging studies suggest the involvement of several temporal regions in Parkinson's disease (PD) patients with visual hallucinations (VH). We examined 24 nondemented PD patients with VH, 21 PD patients without VH, and 21 healthy controls using a battery of tests assessing different aspects of temporal lobe function. PD patients with VH showed poorer performance in language, verbal learning, semantic fluency, and visuoperceptive functions compared to controls and PD patients without VH. Differences in verbal learning and visuoperceptive functions were independen…

A case of unusual Landau-Kleffner syndrome was reported. She was an 8 year-old girl and showed non-verbal agnosia, diffuse EEG abnormalities and convulsions. Her responses to both verbal and non-verbal sounds remained inconsistent and unstable. When a continuous spike-wave complexes on EEG was detected, she paid no attention to any sound in spite of her fair consciousness. Auditory brainstem response and magnetic resonance imaging of her brain were normal. Auditory agnosia was correlated well with EEG abnormalities, and valproic acid and clonazepam were effective for EEG improvement. After the
