The new traffic legislation in Germany ("FeVAndV") solves at least the most urgent problems for the ophthalmological driver's license assessment which were present in the old, preceding regulations ("FeV"). Many suggestions of the traffic committee of the German Ophthalmological Society ("DOG") were taken into consideration. As expected, the recommendations of the traffic committee concerning an obligatory test of mesopic vision were not adopted into the new legislation. We still have the unacceptable situation that on the one hand the European legislation demands an obligatory test of mesopic

Developmental dyslexia is a neurodevelopmental condition which causes 5-10% of children to have unexpected difficulty learning to read. Many dyslexics have impaired development of the magnocellular component of the visual system, which is important for timing visual events and controlling eye movements. Poor control of eye movement may lead to unstable binocular fixation, and hence unsteady vision; this could explain why many dyslexics report that letters appear to move around, causing visual confusion. Previous research has suggested that such binocular confusion can be permanently alleviated

Changes with age in heterophoria, associated heterophoria, fixation disparity and stereopsis for near vision were investigated in a sample of 187 subjects (age range from 10 to 65 years) divided into six age groups. With increasing age, heterophoria, associated heterophoria and fixation disparity increased in the exo-direction. No change in stereopsis was found. A comparison with visual symptoms for near vision indicated a relationship between symptoms and the magnitude of fixation disparity and associated heterophoria for all age groups, but no relationship was found between the presence of s

The aim of this study was to measure the useful field of vision (UFoV) in people with visual impairment and to compare results with clinical measures of vision. UFoV, visual acuity, contrast sensitivity and visual fields were measured in 36 participants with low vision and 22 age-matched controls in two age groups. For both the low vision and control groups the presence of distractors (cluttered field) increased the error rates on our UFoV measure but there was no significant effect of the presence of a central task (divided attention). Participants with low vision made more errors on UFoV tha

This study applied the light bulb shadow test, a manikin vision assessment test, and an individual test to a forklift truck to identify forklift truck design factors influencing visibility. The light bulb shadow test followed the standard of ISO/DIS 13564-1 for traveling and maneuvering tests with four test paths (Test Nos. 1, 3, 4, and 6). Digital human and forklift truck models were developed for the manikin vision assessment test with CATIA V5R13 human modeling solutions. Six participants performed the individual tests. Both employed similar parameters to the light bulb shadow test. The ind

BACKGROUND: Sports vision is a specialisation of optometry whose objective is to improve and preserve visual function to increase sports performance. The main objective of the present study was to compare the visual expertise of non-athletes to skeet shooting athletes.
METHODS: Participants underwent an optometric assessment in which all those with severe deviations from normal vision, after compensating for visual abnormalities, were eliminated. After that, the following six visuospatial components were measured: hand-eye coordination, peripheral awareness, fixation disparity, saccadic eye m

BACKGROUND: Adults with central vision loss (CVL) have a higher rate of tripping possibly due to impaired contrast sensitivity. This study determined how adults with CVL adjust their gait to step over an obstacle whose visibility varied by height and contrast.
METHODS: Twenty-nine older adults, 15 controls with normal vision (78.1 ± 5.7 years) and 14 with CVL (79.4 ± 6.0 years) walked along a 6-meter, black carpeted walkway and stepped over a single obstacle that varied in height (1 cm and 19 cm) and contrast (21% and 83% Michelson contrast). Ten trials for each condition were completed. Lowe

BACKGROUND: Registration as sight impaired allows access to services important for patients. The rates of sight impairment due to visual field loss are underestimated. Previous work has shown that evaluation of visual field defects in both eyes produces poor agreement among ophthalmologists for categorisation of patients as eligible for sight impairment registration.
AIM: To evaluate the impact of binocular summation of both eye glaucomatous visual field defects on agreement for sight impairment registration.
METHODS: Thirty consultant ophthalmologists (Graders), graded 50 glaucomatous visua

BACKGROUND: The Frisby stereotest commonly is used in clinical practice to estimate stereoacuity. Assessment of the presence or absence of stereopsis is valuable particularly in toddlers because of the difficulties encountered in this age group with assessment of other aspects of visual function, such as monocular visual acuities.
METHODS: The present study describes two modifications to the Frisby stereotest: 1) the introduction of a nonstereo practice plate; and 2) the use of an auditory "reward" for correct identification of the target. These modifications aim to increase the success rate

Previous studies measuring accommodative facility have been confined to young adults and children. Standard test procedures were used to measure interactive facility (i.e., binocular accommodative flip test) in a sample of 45 adults from 30 to 42 years of age. The results showed a marked reduction in the average number of cycles per minute performed for the +/- 2.00 D flip test. Symptoms in the sample were also tabulated and their relation with interactive facility investigated. We found no direct relation between symptoms and accommodative facility. Further studies are needed to establish nor

Eight patients with a subjective disorder of vision yet normal Snellen acuities after optic neuritis were shown to have an abnormal contrast sensitivity function in their affected eye. It appears that certain disorders of vision are associated with an abnormality of the contrast sensitivity function in spite of near normal visual acuity. Such an abnormality may affect pattern recognition without having an influence on Snellen acuity because of the high contrast of the latter and its predominant association with the higher spatial frequencies. Contrast sensitivity function is thus the only tool

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a chronic autoimmune disorder with diverse clinical manifestations. Among these, ocular complications are notably prevalent, affecting up to one-third of patients. One rare but serious ocular complication of SLE is central retinal artery occlusion (CRAO), which can result in significant vision loss. We report a case of a young woman with sudden, painless vision loss in her right eye over two days. Fundoscopy confirmed CRAO, with no light perception in the affected eye and normal vision in the left eye. Physical examination revealed symptoms suggestive of a

Both glaucomatous cupping and the presence of acquired color vision deficits have been reported to be precursors to the onset of visual field defects in patients with suspected glaucoma. To examine the relationship between early glaucomatous cupping and acquired color vision anomalies, we performed anomaloscope (Pickford-Nicholson) and Farnsworth-Munsell 100-Hue color vision tests in 48 ocular hypertensive eyes with either clinical evidence of early glaucomatous cupping (group 1) or no evidence of glaucomatous cupping (group 2). All patients had normal visual fields, as determined by extensive…

OBJECTIVES: Current cognitive screening and diagnostic instruments rely on visually dependent tasks and are, therefore, not suitable to assess cognitive impairment (CI) in visually impaired older adults. We describe the content development of the VISually Independent test battery Of NeuroCOGnition (VISION-Cog)-a new diagnostic tool to evaluate CI in visually impaired older Singaporean adults.
DESIGN: The content development phase consisted of two iterative stages: a neuropsychological consultation and literature review (stage 1) and an expert-panel discussion (stage 2). In stage 1, we investi

PURPOSE: Age-related eye disease may be associated with cognitive decline, but the scientific literature has not been consistent. Furthermore, no studies have been able to explain the relationship. Our objective was to assess whether older adults with age-related macular degeneration (AMD) or glaucoma performed worse on 6 cognitive tests compared with older adults with normal vision and, if so, to understand why.
DESIGN: Cross-sectional analysis of hospital-based study (Maisonneuve-Rosemont Hospital Ophthalmology Clinics, Montréal, Canada).
PARTICIPANTS: Three hundred thirty-six adults 65 ye
