Intussusception is the leading cause for intestinal obstruction in children. However, it accounts for only 5% of bowel obstructions in adults. Heterotopic gastric mucosa (HGM) can occur anywhere in the gastrointestinal tract; nevertheless, its occurrence in the small intestine is rare unless associated with remnants of vitelline duct (Meckel's diverticulum). Herein, we describe a case of a 33-year-old male who presented with symptoms and signs of intestinal obstruction caused by ileo-colic intussusception, in which polypoid HGM acted as the organic lead point for intussusception. Several cases

Meckel's diverticulum is the most frequent anomaly of the small intestine that results from the failure of the vitelline duct to obliterate during the gestation. It occurs on the antimesenteric border of the ileum, usually 60-80 cm proximally to the ileocecal valve. Meckel's diverticulum is true diverticulum because it has all the three layers of the terminal ileum. The heterotopic mucosa is most commonly gastric or pancreatic. Most patients are asymptomatic. Meckel's diverticulum is most frequently diagnosed as an incidental finding during laparotomy. The most frequent complications of Meckel

Caudal regression sequence (CRS) is a rare congenital defect of the lower spinal segments and the neural tube. Motor symptoms as well as neurological deficits and loss of bladder and bowel function are usually present. CRS is also associated with anomalies in other systems such as the gastrointestinal and genitourinary tract. Etiology and pathogenesis are poorly understood.A newborn presented with anomalies of the spinal column (lumbosacral) with absence/hypoplasia of the 12th thoracic and first lumbar vertebral anomaly body. Bladder and bowel initially were functional. MR-angiography exhibite

Thirty-six flukes were collected from the livers of wild deer (Cervus nippon centralis) captured in Iwate Prefecture, Japan, and were served for morphometry. The length and/or the width of the body, suckers, testes, ovary, vitelline glands, cirrus pouch and eggs in the uterus of the flukes were measured. The distance between anterior end of the body and position of the maximal body-width or upper end of the testes were also determined. A remarked morphological characteristic was that the right and left testes did not lie tandem but lined bilaterally. Also the position of the maximal body-width

The anomalies related to omphalomesenteric duct remnant constitute an uncommon cause of intestinal obstruction, of which Meckel"s diverticulum and its variants represent the most important clinical presentation. In most cases they are asymptomatic and usually affect young patients. When symptomatic, they usually present episodes of gastrointestinal bleeding or acute abdomen syndromes caused by strangulation of intestinal loops as a result of fibrous intraabdominal remnants or inflammation produced by the diverticulum. In most cases, the unexpected presence of these alterations makes intraopera

A 54-yr-old man who complained of abdominal pain was found to have an adenocarcinoma arising in Meckel's diverticulum, as preoperatively diagnosed with 99mTc-pertechnetate scintigraphy. Angiography of the superior mesenteric artery revealed multiple branched arteries and tumor stain, but the vitelline artery was not clearly identified. Surgery revealed that the tumor had invaded the urinary bladder and the ileum, including the diverticulum, and the bladder had to be partially resected. Histopathological examination of the lesion revealed a diverticulum containing normal small bowel mucosa, ect

Meckel's diverticulum (MD) represents a remnant of the embryonic vitelline duct and is recognized as a congenital anomaly of the small intestine. While it is more frequently identified in children, the majority of cases remain clinically silent, with symptomatic presentation in adults being relatively rare. When present, symptoms typically reflect complications, including gastrointestinal hemorrhage, diverticulitis, or intestinal obstruction. The probability of developing complications decreases with advancing age, making clinically significant presentations in elderly individuals uncommon and

The omphalomesenteric duct (OMD) or the vitelline duct (VD) is the embryologic communication between the yolk sac and the primitive midgut. OMD or VD anomalies are a group of defects resulting from failure of involution of the OMD. Meckel diverticulum is the most common anomaly that results from failure of resorption of the OMD. Other less common anomalies seen in children include OMD fibrous band, fistula, sinus tract, cyst, and umbilical polyps. These OMD remnants can have variable clinical manifestations such as umbilical discharge, small bowel obstruction, gastrointestinal tract bleeding,

A new genus, Mystocestus, is proposed to accommodate a new species, Mystocestus anindoi n. g., n. sp. from Mystus vittatus (Bloch) (type host) in West Bengal and Mystus cavasius (Hamilton) (Siluriformes: Bagridae) in Maharashtra, India. The new genus is most similar to Lucknowia Gupta, 1961 in the shape of the body, which is elongate, slightly tapering towards the anterior end, and scolex, which is digitiform, but differs in the shape of the ovary, which is H-shaped (vs. inverted A-shaped in Lucknowia), the absence of a seminal receptacle (present in Lucknowia) and exclusively cortical vitelli

The reproductive development and maturation of female schistosomes are crucial since their released eggs are responsible for the host immunopathology and transmission of schistosomiasis. However, little is known about the nutrients required by female Schistosoma japonicum during its sexual maturation. We evaluated the promoting effect of several nutrients (calf serum, red blood cells (RBCs), ATP and hypoxanthine) on the reproductive development of pre-adult females at 18 days post infection (dpi) from mixed infections and at 50 dpi from unisexual infections of laboratory mice in basic medium R

A new genus and five new species of digeneans are reported from fishes at hydrothermal vent sites in the South East Pacific Rise region. Biospeedotrema n. gen. (Opecoelidae: Stenakrinae) is distinguished from other stenakrines by the more or less symmetrical testicular configuration, with the uterus passing between the testes, sometimes distinctly into the post-testicular region. Biospeedotrema jolliveti n. gen., n. sp. from Ventichthys biospeedoi (Ophidiidae) is distinguished by the vitelline fields which extend only slightly into the post-testicular region, the intestinal bifurcation is dors

A technique was developed to assess the number of cock spermatozoa penetrating the perivitelline layer (PL) in oviposited eggs in vivo. Two trials were conducted to test this technique and to establish correlation values between fertility and sperm penetration (SP). First, three Athens Canadian Randombred males, previously tested as having high fertility (100%), were each housed with seven hens. Sperm penetration was determined from eggs laid over a 3-d period (n = 41) with the mean number of spermatozoa penetrating the PL overlying the germinal disc (GD; 1.35 mm2 area) and nongerminal disc (N

Vitellointestinal duct (VID) anomalies have been described extensively in the literature. However, an everted VID with prolapse of ileum arising from an omphalocele is rare, and its appearance at birth can be alarming and can present a diagnostic challenge. We describe a baby born to a teenage diabetic mother who was noted to have a strange exophytic mass arising from the abdominal wall. Antenatal scans had revealed multiple other malformations but not an omphalocele. He was operated on early, and the diagnosis of a patent VID with prolapse of the ileum arising from an omphalocele was only con

A Meckel's diverticulum was diagnosed by mesenteric angiography in a 34 year-old patient who presented with hematochezia and dropping hemoglobin. The case demonstrates the challenges often encountered in workup of occult gastrointestinal (GI) bleeding, and shows that angiographic diagnosis of Meckel's diverticulum is possible, even in the absence of angiographic evidence of active extravasation. Our patient had a previous non-diagnostic workup including upper and lower endoscopy, videocapsulography, and Technetium-99m pertechnetate (Tc-99m) scintigraphy. Visceral angiogram demonstrated the pre

Meckel's diverticulum (MD) is the most common congenital anomaly of the gastrointestinal tract, yet it remains a diagnostic challenge in adults due to its non-specific presentation and lower prevalence compared to the pediatric population. We report the case of a 61-year-old man with a history of rectosigmoid adenocarcinoma who presented with recurrent, life-threatening hematochezia from a diverting loop ileostomy. After inconclusive endoscopic and computed tomography (CT) evaluations, mesenteric angiography identified an aberrant omphalomesenteric (vitelline) artery supplying an MD. Following

Drug-induced suppression of female schistosome sexual maturation is an auspicious strategy to combat schistosomiasis since the eggs are the causative agent. The establishment of drug targets requires knowledge about the molecular mechanisms that regulate the development of the female reproductive organs, which include vitellarium and ovary. This review summarizes recent studies suggesting tyrosine kinases as important factors for the regulation of female gonad development. In this context, especially cytoplasmatic tyrosine kinases of the Src class seem to play dominant roles. Moreover, experim

Caudal regression sequence (CRS) is a rare developmental defect of the lower spinal segments and the neural tube. Motor and sensory neurological deficits of the lower extremities as well as a reduced control of bowel and bladder functions are the main symptoms. Etiology and pathogenesis are widely unknown.
