Efficacy of Intra-Operative Topical Wound Anaesthesia to Mitigate Piglet Castration Pain-A Large, Multi-Centred Field Trial.

Piglet castration results in acute pain and stress to the animal. There is a critical need for effective on-farm methods of pain mitigation. Local anaesthesia using Tri-Solfen® (Animal Ethics Pty Ltd., Melbourne, Australia), a topical local anaesthetic and antiseptic formulation instilled to the wound during surgery, is a newly evolving on-farm method to mitigate castration pain. To investigate the efficacy of Tri-Solfen®, instilled to the wound during the procedure, to alleviate subsequent castration-related pain in neonatal piglets, we performed a large, negatively controlled, randomised fie

Mechanisms of sound production in deer mice (Peromyscus spp.).

Rodent diversification is associated with a large diversity of species-specific social vocalizations generated by two distinct laryngeal sound production mechanisms: whistling and airflow-induced vocal fold vibration. Understanding the relative importance of each modality to context-dependent acoustic interactions requires comparative analyses among closely related species. In this study, we used light gas experiments, acoustic analyses and laryngeal morphometrics to identify the distribution of the two mechanisms among six species of deer mice (Peromyscus spp.). We found that high frequency v

Roars, groans and moans: Anatomical correlates of vocal diversity in polygynous deer.

Eurasian deer are characterized by the extraordinary diversity of their vocal repertoires. Male sexual calls range from roars with relatively low fundamental frequency (hereafter fo ) in red deer Cervus elaphus, to moans with extremely high fo in sika deer Cervus nippon, and almost infrasonic groans with exceptionally low fo in fallow deer Dama dama. Moreover, while both red and fallow males are capable of lowering their formant frequencies during their calls, sika males appear to lack this ability. Female contact calls are also characterized by relatively less pronounced, yet strong interspec

Sexual performance and precontact 50-kHz ultrasonic vocalizations in WAG/Rij rats: effects of opioid receptor treatment.

WAG/Rij rats are genetically selected animals that model absence epilepsy in rats. Ultrasonic vocalizations and sexual behavior - both ethologically relevant markers of reward system functioning - are poorly described in this strain. The aim of our experiment was to investigate reward-dependent precontact 50-kHz vocalizations (PVs) and copulatory behavior as well as the effects of opioid receptor treatment on such behaviors in sexually experienced WAG/Rij males and rats from two control strains: Sprague-Dawley and Crl: Han Wistar. We analyzed the effects of the opioid receptor antagonist naltr

Combined enrichment and pharmaceutical intervention reduces excessive arousal in shelter dogs in a randomized controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Environmental stressors in animal shelters may lead to development of excessive arousal, posing risks to adoptability and behavioral euthanasia. Recommendations regarding excessive arousal in shelter dogs include providing pharmaceuticals and enrichment. METHODS: A randomized controlled trial was conducted to assess the influence of enrichment and pharmaceutical interventions on shelter dogs (N = 50) displaying excessive arousal from a municipal animal shelter in Texas, United States. Data were collected during 1 week of baseline conditions (days 1-7) and 1 week of treatment (da

Enhancing poultry health management through machine learning-based analysis of vocalization signals dataset.

Population expansion and rising consumer demand for nutrient-dense meals have both contributed to an increase in the consumption of animal protein worldwide. A significant portion of the meat and eggs used for human consumption come from the poultry industry. Early diagnosis and warning of infectious illnesses in poultry are crucial for enhancing animal welfare and minimizing losses in the breeding and production systems for poultry. On the other hand, insufficient techniques for early diagnosis as well as infectious disease control in poultry farms occasionally fail to stop declining producti

Multi-Layered Implant Approach for Hemilaryngectomy Reconstruction in a Porcine Model.

OBJECTIVE: Partial laryngectomies result in voice, swallowing, and airway impairment for thousands of patients in the United States each year. Treatment options for dynamic restoration of laryngeal function are limited. Thus, there is a need for new reconstructive approaches. Here, we evaluated early (4 week) outcomes of multi-layered mucosal-myochondral (MMC) implants when used to restore laryngeal form and function after hemilaryngectomy in a porcine model. METHODS: Six Yucatan minipigs underwent transmural hemilaryngectomies followed by reconstruction with customized MMC implants aiming to

Ifenprodil infusion in agranular insular cortex alters social behavior and vocalizations in rats exposed to moderate levels of ethanol during prenatal development.

Moderate exposure to alcohol during development leads to subtle neurobiological and behavioral effects classified under the umbrella term fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASDs). Alterations in social behaviors are a frequently observed consequence of maternal drinking, as children with FASDs display inappropriate aggressive behaviors and altered responses to social cues. Rodent models of FASDs mimic the behavioral alterations seen in humans, with rats exposed to ethanol during development displaying increased aggressive behaviors, decreased social investigation, and altered play behavior. Comparing the relative amount of testosterone required to restore sexual arousal, motivation, and performance in male rats.

It is well established that male rat reproductive behaviors including sexual arousal, motivation, and performance are dependent on circulating levels of testosterone (T). The present study was designed to (1) compare the relative amount of T required to restore these different aspects of behavior in castrated rats, and (2) create an animal model for clinical populations with sexual impairments. Twenty-nine male Long-Evans rats were tested before and after castration for sexual performance (copulation), motivation (partner preference), and arousal (50 kHz ultrasonic vocalizations; measured toge

Combined Injection for Control of Iron-Deficiency Anemia and Coccidiosis in Piglets Decreases Stress at Management Time.

The aim of the present study was to assess the short-term behavioral and physiological responses of piglets to different treatment protocols for the control of iron-deficiency anemia (IDA) and cystoisosporosis. Piglets were treated with either (1) an injection of iron combined with an oral application of toltrazuril (TLZ) by drenching or (2) a combination injection of TZL + gleptoferron; the behavior of the piglets was then evaluated. For this study, 288 piglets were divided into three experimental groups: 96 piglets were kept untreated (control group); 96 piglets received an oral administrati

Cell therapy and vocal fold scarring.

Vocal fold microstructure is complex and can be affected by laryngeal microsurgery, inducing scarring that prevents mechanical uncoupling of epithelium and muscle, leading to vibration disorder and disabling dysphonia. Treatment options presently are few, and often without efficacy for vibration, having only an impact on volume to reduce glottal closure defect. The present review of the literature had two aims: (i) to report the current state of the literature on cell therapy in vocal fold scarring; and (ii) to analyze the therapeutic interest of the adipose-derived stromal vascular fraction i

The ontogeny of acoustic individuality in the nasal calls of captive goitred gazelles, Gazella subgutturosa.

Individualistic voices are important for establishing personalized relationships among individuals. In young animals, individual vocal identity is affected by permanent changes of the acoustics due to the growth of their vocal apparatus. Different acoustic variables change uncoordinatedly, so vocal individuality should be repeatedly upgraded along development. We compared classifying accuracy of individuals and sexes by nasal calls in fast-growing goitred gazelles Gazella subgutturosa at two ontogenetic stages, juvenile (3-6 weeks of age) and adolescent (23-26 weeks of age). Juvenile "spring"

Whistle sequences in wild killer whales (Orcinus orca).

Combining different stereotyped vocal signals into specific sequences increases the range of information that can be transferred between individuals. The temporal emission pattern and the behavioral context of vocal sequences have been described in detail for a variety of birds and mammals. Yet, in cetaceans, the study of vocal sequences is just in its infancy. Here, we provide a detailed analysis of sequences of stereotyped whistles in killer whales off Vancouver Island, British Columbia. A total of 1140 whistle transitions in 192 whistle sequences recorded from resident killer whales were an

Edible agents with perceptible minds: A psychological study of human perception in human-food interaction.

Investigating the psychological and cognitive mechanisms of eating living beings is important for understanding ethical judgments and decision-making in eating behaviors. For example, the meat paradox describes a conflict about harming animals for food. In addition, perceiving a mind in a target has been shown to influence ethical judgment. However, experimentally investigating such food-related ethical themes is difficult, particularly when using actual animals, due to ethical constraints. Therefore, this study proposes an experimental framework using edible agents. Previous research develope

Recent Advances in the Genetics of Vocal Learning.

Language is a complex communicative behavior unique to humans, and its genetic basis is poorly understood. Genes associated with human speech and language disorders provide some insights, originating with the FOXP2 transcription factor, a mutation in which is the source of an inherited form of developmental verbal dyspraxia. Subsequently, targets of FOXP2 regulation have been associated with speech and language disorders, along with other genes. Here, we review these recent findings that implicate genetic factors in human speech. Due to the exclusivity of language to humans, no single animal m

Effect of vocal fold augmentation on laryngeal vibration in simulated recurrent laryngeal nerve paralysis: a study of Teflon and Phonogel.

Flaccid laryngeal nerve paralysis may be treated by vocal fold augmentation with Teflon injection, which is successful to various degrees depending on the subjective interpretation of the patient or clinician. A new material, Phonogel, consisting of cross-linked bovine collagen, is available but not approved for human use in this area. Ten dogs were submitted to videostroboscopy, photoglottography, electroglottography, and acoustic analysis in the normal state, with stimulated recurrent laryngeal nerve paralysis, and with injection of either Teflon or Phonogel. A statistical comparison and the
