We analyzed cervical intraepithelial neoplasias (CINs) detected after cryotherapy to determine if recurrence is associated with the same human papillomavirus (HPV) type found in the original lesion. Eight women had detectable HPV DNA in CINs that occurred after ablation of another CIN, and for each patient the HPV type in the pretreatment lesion was different from that in the CIN that appeared after cryotherapy. This compares with 12 women who had HPV detected in two or more CINs present at the same time, 11 of whom had the same HPV type noted. We concluded that although multiple, simultaneous

Patterns of regression in common warts were studied. Patients with multiple verrucae vulgaris lesions applied topical agents to the warts and were observed at regular intervals until the lesions disappeared. Regression took place without the warts turning black in all but one instance. All warts did not disappear simultaneously; some lesions persisted weeks after others had disappeared. Microscopic examination in five patients of a wart persisting after most had regressed demonstrated mononuclear cell infiltration, exocytosis, and degenerative epidermal changes. Failure to demonstrate cellular…

Intraurethral spread of venereal warts is a serious complication. Urethral involvement may be extensive and is associated with severe irritative symptoms. Spread to the bladder is possible. Recurrence are frequent and eradication difficult. We describe the urethrographic appearance of intraurethral verrucae and believe it to be strongly suggestive of the diagnosis. Voiding cystourethrography is recommended, and satisfactory visualization may be obtained with either voiding or retrograde urethrography. Voiding urethrography following intravenously administered contrast (excretory voiding cystou…

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether women who have a history of genital warts or whose sexual partners have such a history were more likely to have borderline or dyskaryotic cervical smears than other women.
DESIGN: Prospective study conducted over a five month period.
SETTING: A genitourinary medicine clinic in Cambridge, UK.
PATIENTS: One hundred and eighty five women who attended the clinic during the study period, on whom cervical cytology was performed. Ninety-seven had a history of genital warts and twenty had partners with genital warts.
METHODS: Cervical cytology taken by standard meth…

Folk medicine played an important role in human history. Their sources were fed by experience, superstition and religiosity. In the following, we analyze traditions of wart therapy with a focus on Europe under medical-historical aspects. We focus on zootherapy, i.e. the use of animals to treat common skin warts. Both domestic and wild animals were used. Mollusks, reptiles, spiders, insects, fish, and mammals are mentioned. Often the animals used died an agonizing death within these rites. The cruelty of such procedures may be seen as a reflection of the hard living conditions of common people …

Intralesional therapies are used for recalcitrant warts, but no Food and Drug Administration-approved treatment exists nor is there consensus regarding the most efficacious therapy. Therefore, this systematic review aims to summarize efficacy and adverse events reported in 62 randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of intralesional therapies for cutaneous warts. The most studied intralesional therapies included measles, mumps, rubella (MMR) vaccine (n = 24 studies), purified protein derivative (PPD) (n = 19 studies), vitamin D3 (n = 15 studies), and Candida antigen (n = 14 studies). Most studies i…

Genital warts (GWs) are the most common sexually transmitted infections worldwide, caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV). In adults, the primary mode of transmission is through sexual contact, whereas in children, it can occur through skin-to-skin or skin-to-mucosa contact and be sexual or non-sexual. The increasing prevalence of GWs in children has renewed the interest in therapeutic management, which still presents a unique challenge, being influenced by many variables, including size, quantity, and location of warts, as well as the presence of comorbidities. Photodynamic therapy (PDT) ha…

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: WHIM syndrome (warts, hypogammaglobulinemia, immunodeficiency, myelokathexis, or WHIMs) is a very rare autosomal dominant immunodeficiency disorder attributable to mutations in CXCR4. We reviewed clinical manifestations in 24 patients in 9 families to expand understanding of this syndrome.
RECENT FINDINGS: Warts, cellulitis and respiratory infections are common in patients with WHIMs. Less commonly these patients have congenital heart disease, human papilloma virus-associated malignancies (cervical and vulvular) and lymphomas. Hearing loss because of recurrent otitis media …

Acquired lymphangiectasia of the vulva is very uncommon. Owing to the non-specific papillomatous manifestation and the vast array of possible differential diagnoses, lymphangioma circumscriptum (LC) still presents a diagnostic challenge. In this report, we present a very rare form of acquired vulvar LC in a 71-year-old patient with a longstanding history of asymptomatic lesions over the labia majora that had been previously treated as genital warts. On examination, the patient had multiple clustered translucent papules up to 15mm in diameter, morphologically reminiscent of vesicles, that oozed…

Extragenital cutaneous warts are benign epidermal tumors caused by human papillomaviruses (HPVs) and a frequent reason for patients to consult a dermatologist. Depending on wart type and site involved, the clinical presentation is highly varied. Given that warts represent a self-limiting condition, a wait-and-see approach may be justified. However, treatment is always indicated if the lesions become painful or give rise to psychological discomfort. Factors to be considered in this context include subjective disease burden, patient age, site affected, as well as the number and duration of lesio…

BACKGROUND: 30% of people with anogenital warts (AGW) have spontaneous regression of lesions but there is no way to determine whether a specific lesion will remain. There are a wide range of options available for treating people with AGW and selection is based on clinician's experience, patient preferences and adverse effects. The imiquimod could offer the advantages of patient-applied therapies without incurring the limitations of provider-administered treatments.
OBJECTIVES: To assess the effectiveness and safety of imiquimod for the treatment of AGW in non-immunocompromised adults.

INTRODUCTION: Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection can present clinically as genital warts (GWs) in both males and females. Much less is known about the psychosexual consequences of GW, and the studies on patients in this group are still quite limited.
AIMS: The aim of this study was to test two hypotheses: (i) sexual dysfunction (SD) is likely to occur in male patients suffering from GWs; (ii) if male SD exists, it may be associated with depression or anxiety.
METHODS: This was a pilot study with a prospective cross-sectional design. Male patients with GW (N for patient group = 116) were co…

Vestibular papillomatosis (VP) is a benign condition of the female genitalia that may be mistaken for condyloma acuminatum (genital warts). In contrast to condylomata, lesions of VP each grow from a distinct mucosal insertion; match the color of the surrounding mucosa; and are symmetrically distributed, limited to the inner labia minora and vaginal introitus. Recognition of this entity will help to prevent unnecessary stress, testing, and discomfort.

Warts remain one of the most common reasons for dermatology and primary care visits, yet no definitive therapy is available. Treatment of pediatric patients adds additional challenges, as the adept provider must effectively manage parents' expectations and patients' fears. This article provides an update on research in the field of viral cutaneous wart therapies with a focus on pediatric patients. Safety issues and potential complications of therapy are also addressed.

BACKGROUND: An increasing body of evidence supports the usefulness of photodynamic therapy (PDT) in the treatment of non-neoplastic pathological conditions, including genital warts. In particular, PDT has demonstrated good clinical cure rates and low recurrence, and is now suggested as a safe alternative means of treating condylomata.
OBJECTIVE: To confirm the suitability of aminolaevulinic acid (ALA)-PDT for the treatment of this condition and to investigate the recruitment and significance of immune cells in lesional areas by immunohistochemical analysis at different time intervals after tr…
