Biodiesel Production from Waste Cooking Oil Using Recombinant Escherichia coli Cells Immobilized into Fe3O4-Chitosan Magnetic Microspheres.

Developing reusable and easy-to-operate biocatalysts is of significant interest in biodiesel production. Here, magnetic whole-cell catalysts constructed through immobilizing recombinant Escherichia coli cells (containing MAS1 lipase) into Fe3O4-chitosan magnetic microspheres (termed MWCC@MAS1) were used for fatty acid methyl ester (FAME) production from waste cooking oil (WCO). During the preparation process of immobilized cells, the effects of chitosan concentration and cell concentration on their activity and activity recovery were investigated. Optimal immobilization was achieved with 3% (w

Efficient biodiesel production by sulfonated carbon catalyst derived from waste glycerine pitch via single-step carbonisation and sulfonation.

Glycerine pitch is a highly alkaline residue from the oleochemical industry that contains glycerol and contaminants, such as water, soap, salt and ash. In this study, acidic heterogeneous glycerol-based carbon catalysts were synthesised for biodiesel production via single-step partial carbonisation and sulfonation using pure glycerol and glycerine pitch, producing products labelled as SGC and SGPC, respectively. Carbon materials were obtained by heating glycerol and concentrated sulfuric acid (1:3) at 200℃ for 1 h. The produced SGC and SGPC displayed high densities of sulfonic group (-SO3H), i

Transforming tree topping waste into flooring: a study on the production and evaluation of oriented strand board finish using urban and garden residues.

Oriented strand board (OSB) has become a popular building material for residential construction, but little research has been conducted on its use as a finish floor material. The study investigated the quality and performance of OSB as an alternative to traditional engineered wood products for finish floors. Four types of OSB finish floors using a mixture of garden and urban tree toppings were produced and evaluated, along with different types and levels of resin and mat moisture content. The finish floor panels were subjected to a battery of tests, including concentrated loading, indentation,

Ferric chloride aiding nitrite pretreatment for the enhancement of the quantity and quality of short-chain fatty acids production in waste activated sludge.

The production of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) via anaerobic fermentation of waste activated sludge (WAS) is often limited with poor quality of SCFAs and long fermentation time. To overcome these issues, we provided an efficient strategy by using ferric chloride (FC) to aid nitrite pretreatment. Experimental results showed that the maximal SCFAs production of 211.3 ± 3.1 mg COD/g VS was achieved with 4 mmol/L of FC integrated with 250 mg/L of nitrite pretreatment on day 5, which was 4.1-fold higher than that of the blank control (52 ± 5 mg COD/g VS, day 7). Besides, the enrichment of acetic

Enhancing methane production from waste activated sludge with heat-assisted potassium ferrate (PF) pretreatment: Reaction kinetics and mechanisms.

This work proposed a novel strategy via heat-assisted potassium ferrate (PF) pretreatment to enhance methane production from waste activated sludge (WAS) during anaerobic digestion. In this research, five dosages of PF (i.e., 0, 0.05, 0.1, 0.3 and 0.5 g/g VSS) at two temperatures (i.e., 25 °C and 55 °C) were explored. Biochemical methane potential experiments illustrated that heat-assisted PF pretreatment improved cumulative methane production with the maximum yield up to 163.93 mL CH4/g VSS, 149.0 %, 119.6 % and 121.0 % of that in the control, individual 0.5 g PF/g VSS and individual heat (i.

Integrated carbon dioxide/sludge gasification using waste heat from hot slags: syngas production and sulfur dioxide fixation.

The integrated CO2/sludge gasification using the waste heat in hot slags, was explored with the aim of syngas production, waste heat recovery and sewage sludge disposal. The results demonstrated that hot slags presented multiple roles on sludge gasification, i.e., not only a good heat carrier (500-950 °C) but also an effective desulfurizer (800-900 °C). The total gas yields increased from 0.022 kg/kgsludge at 500 °C to 0.422 kg/kgsludge at 900 °C; meanwhile, the SO2 concentration at 900 °C remarkably reduced from 164 ppm to 114 ppm by blast furnace slags (BFS) and 93 ppm by steel slags (SS), r

Enhancing Mushroom Growing Substrate Through Biochar and Agro-Waste Integration to Promote Overall Productivity and Economic Impact in Lentinus squarrosulus Cultivation.

This study explores the potential of integrating agro-wastes with bamboo biochar to develop optimized substrates for cultivating Lentinus squarrosulus, aiming to enhance mycelial growth, productivity, nutritional quality, and economic returns. The chemical characterization revealed clear contrasts between sawdust and corn dust, where sawdust provided a carbon-rich but nitrogen-limited structure, while corn dust offered a greater nutrient availability. When formulated into mixed substrates, particularly at a 50:50 ratio, a more balanced physicochemical profile was achieved, improving substrate

A novel approach to enhance methane production in anaerobic digestion of waste activated sludge via pre-enrichment by a microbial consortium of degrading fungi.

Both fungi and bacteria contribute to the efficiency of activated sludge processes. However, fungal degradability has historically been overlooked in the anaerobic fermentation of waste-activated sludge (WAS). This study investigated the role of an enriched microbial consortium of degrading fungi (MCDF) in WAS fermentation. MCDF was initially enriched using a mixture of WAS and two mesophilic anaerobic sludges with chitin as the substrate. Fungal diversity and key cell wall polysaccharides, including chitin, mannan, and glucans, were identified in WAS. The addition of enriched MCDF to WAS sign

Co-Production of Hydrogen and Carbon Nanotubes From Waste Plastic Over Ni-Fe/Hydrotalcite Catalysts: Process Optimization and Mechanistic Pathways.

To tackle the urgent energy depletion issue, this research presents a catalytic upcycling approach for plastic waste through thermochemical conversion mediated by Ni-Fe nanoparticles anchored on layered double hydroxide substrates. The effects of Ni/Fe loading molar ratios, catalytic temperatures, and steam flow rates were explored to optimize catalyst performance and operational parameters for hydrogen (H2) production. Attributed to the formation of a spinel phase, the Ni-Fe1.5/hydrotalcite catalyst demonstrated the highest catalytic activity during the catalytic reforming process, yielding 5

Brief aerobic pretreatment for stabilizing long-term caproate production from food waste via fungi-bacteria chain-elongating consortia.

Recovery of medium-chain carboxylic acids (MCCA) from food waste is constrained by low efficiency and instability. This study validated a short-term aerobic pretreatment (AP) strategy to enhance fungi-bacteria synergy. In batch tests, AP (0.2 vvm) achieved optimal caproate titers of 22.32 ± 1.56 g COD/L. The pretreatment enriched ethanol-producing yeasts and lactate-producing bacteria, establishing a robust co-electron donor pool. Metagenomic analysis revealed that this synergy suppressed the competing tricarboxylic acid cycle, redirecting carbon flux towards reverse β-oxidation (RBO) pathway

Carbon-negative syngas production via CO2-assisted catalytic pyrolysis of lignocellulosic yard waste: A case study on horse chestnut shells.

Yard trimmings, a major component of municipal solid waste, are abundant and carbon-neutral feedstocks used for renewable-energy production. However, their complex lignocellulosic structures limit the efficiency of energy conversion via conventional biological methods. This study presents a thermochemical strategy for syngas generation from yard trimmings. Among these, horse chestnut shells (HCSs) are one of the representative types of yard trimmings produced in large quantities worldwide from ornamental trees. Given their abundance and sustainability potential, HCSs were selected as the model

How does the polyhexamethylene guanidine interact with waste activated sludge and affect the metabolic functions in anaerobic fermentation for volatile fatty acids production.

Antibacterial agents are frequently used to ensure public hygiene. Most of the massively consumed chemicals are discarded and accumulated in waste activated sludge (WAS), which might influence the subsequent anaerobic fermentation process for WAS treatment. This study mainly investigated the impacts of polyhexamethylene guanidine (PHMG, considered as a safe and efficient broad-spectrum antibacterial agent) on the volatile fatty acids (VFAs) production derived from WAS anaerobic fermentation and disclosed the key mechanisms. Results demonstrated that low level of PHMG evidently increased the VF

Enhanced volatile fatty acids production from waste activated sludge with synchronous phosphorus fixation and pathogens inactivation by calcium hypochlorite stimulation.

An efficient approach for synchronous volatile fatty acids (VFAs) promotion, phosphorus fixation and pathogens inactivation during waste activated sludge (WAS) anaerobic fermentation was achieved with optimal calcium hypochlorite (Ca(ClO)2) stimulation. The maximal VFAs were 3.6 folds of control in reactors with 0.01 g Ca(ClO)2/g TSS addition. The low dosage of Ca(ClO)2 enhanced WAS solubilization and hydrolysis by disrupting the extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) effectively. Sufficient substrates for fermentative bacteria were thereby provided with the maintenance of acceptable microbia

Treatment of food waste recycling wastewater using anaerobic ceramic membrane bioreactor for biogas production in mainstream treatment process of domestic wastewater.

A bench-scale anaerobic membrane bioreactor (AnMBR) equipped with submerged flat-sheet ceramic membranes was operated at mesophilic conditions (30-35 °C) treating domestic wastewater (DWW) supplemented with food wasterecycling wastewater (FRW) to increase the organic loading rate (OLR) for better biogas production. Coupling ceramic membrane filtration with AnMBR treatment provides an alternative strategy for high organic wastewater treatment at short hydraulic retention times (HRTs) with the potential benefits of membrane fouling because they have a high hydrophilicity and more robust at extre

Process optimization of continuous dark fermentative hydrogen production from food waste: effects of organic loading rate and feed disturbance strategies.

Dark fermentative hydrogen production from organic waste simultaneously valorizes waste and generates clean energy, yet its practical application demands stable continuous operation under variable feeding conditions. This study systematically investigated the effects of organic loading rates (OLR) and feed disturbance strategies on continuous hydrogen production from food waste. The process was evaluated across three regimes: (i) stepwise OLR reduction from 40 to 5 gVS/L·d, (ii) constant high OLR (40 gVS/L·d), and (iii) disturbed feeding consisting of substrate addition (at OLRs of 60 and 40 g
