Vitiligo: the historical curse of depigmentation.

Vitiligo has been mentioned in the tomes of every major religion, with its first description dating back more than 3000 years, to the earliest Vedic and Egyptian texts. Despite this ancient recognition, confusion with disorders such as leprosy has been a problem throughout the ages. This has lead to the stigmatization of vitiligo sufferers. This is a social problem that is still widespread in some, but not all, parts of the world. The ancients also practiced phototherapy for vitiligo. This practice only became common in the Western world with development of psoralen plus ultraviolet A and late…

[Tuberculosis in Poland, Europe, and world. Part II--mortality, drug resistance and HIV infection].

For better control of tuberculosis World Heath Organization has prepared directly observed treatment short-course strategy (DOTS). The number of countries implementing the DOTS has increased bringing the total to 180. TB mortality decreased in western countries but it is very important problem in Africa and Asia. Multidrug-resistant tuberculosis, defined as resistance of M. tuberculosis to at least INH and RMP is especially worrisome because of its potential impact on the control of TB. MDRTB has been reported in most parts of the world but especially in Eastern Europe and in the countries whe

[Epidemiology of sexually transmitted diseases, with the exception of AIDS].

Epidemiologic trends in sexually transmitted diseases strongly vary in the world. The situation is worrying in the developing countries. Both the incidences and prevalences are very high antibiotic resistance is expanding and interactions between sexually transmitted diseases and human immunodeficiency virus contribute to AIDS epidemic. In western Europe, the decline of some sexually transmitted diseases is likely to be linked with successful control programmes and gonorrhea and syphilis now are rare diseases. The USA situation is contrasted. Some inner-city minority population still have high

Slow Progress In Finalizing Measles And Rubella Elimination In The European Region.

All countries in the World Health Organization European Region committed to eliminating endemic transmission of measles and rubella by 2015, and disease incidence has decreased dramatically. However, there was little progress between 2012 and 2013, and the goal will likely not be achieved on time. Genuine political commitment, increased technical capacity, and greater public awareness are urgently needed, especially in Western Europe.

Uncovering the epidemiology of bladder cancer in the Arab world: A review of risk factors, molecular mechanisms, and clinical features.

OBJECTIVE: Bladder cancer (BC) is a significant public health concern in the Middle East and North Africa, but the epidemiology and clinicopathology of the disease and contributors to high mortality in this region remain poorly understood. The aim of this systematic review was to investigate the epidemiological features of BC in the Arab world and compare them to those in Western countries in order to improve the management of this disease. METHODS: An extensive electronic search of the PubMed/PMC and Cochrane Library databases was conducted to identify all articles published until May 2022,

Physical activity and its impact on health outcomes. Paper 1: The impact of physical activity on cardiovascular disease and all-cause mortality: an historical perspective.

The modern scientific study of physical activity began soon after World War II and focused on the epidemic of cardiovascular disease that was beginning to engulf the Western world. Early 'exercise prescriptions' then specified intense bouts of vigorous activity as the most effective way to maintain cardiovascular fitness and 'heart health'. Doctors and other health professionals then grew concerned that progressively fewer individuals were heeding this advice at a time when physical activity from manual work was becoming less common. Evidence was also emerging in the late 1980s that the value …

The Royal Book by Haly Abbas from the 10th century: one of the earliest illustrations of the surgical approach to skull fractures.

Haly Abbas was one of the pioneering physicians and surgeons of the Eastern world in the 10th century who influenced the Western world by his monumental work, The Royal Book. The book was first partly translated into Latin by Constantinus Africanus in the 11th century without citing the author's name. Haly Abbas was recognized in Europe after full translation of The Royal Book by Stephen of Antioch in 1127. The Royal Book has been accepted as an early source of jerrah-names (surgical books) in the Eastern world. The chapters regarding cranial fractures in Haly Abbas' work include unique manage…

Hemorrhoids.

Hemorrhoid disease is common in the Western world with a billion-dollar impact on health care spending. Numerous treatments are available, including surgical and nonoperative options. A plan of care should be made that is tailored to disease anatomy, symptom severity, and relevant medical comorbidities after addressing modifiable risk factors. The authors present a review of the disease pathophysiology, diagnosis, and treatment options for hemorrhoid disease.

Pellagra associated with esophageal carcinoma and alcoholism.

Pellagra is a nutritional disease caused by the deficiency of niacin. It presents with a photodistributed rash, gastrointestinal symptoms, and neuropsychiatric disturbances. In the Western world, this disease is mostly confined to alcoholics or the impoverished. However, this condition must be recognized in other clinical settings because it is easily treated and can be fatal if not identified. We describe a case of pellagra caused by esophageal carcinoma and alcoholism; we also review the literature.

Fish hook injury to the eyelid - an unusual case.

Fishing is recreational activity enjoyed by millions of people worldwide. Although uncommon in developing countries it is a popular pastime in the Western world. and, given this popularity, a number of associated personal injuries are probably inevitable. We report a case of fish hook injury to the eyelid and discuss the various techniques available for removal of fish hooks. The terminologies associated with various parts of the fish hook are also illustrated.

Varicose veins: facts and fantasy.

The high prevalence of varicose veins in Western countries contrasts with their relative rarity in traditionally living communities in the Third World. Evidence is presented in support of the hypothesis that a major causative factor is the transmission of raised intra-abdominal pressures to the veins of the legs. One important cause of these pressures is the abdominal straining necessitated to evacuate small firm stools, which in turn are the result of fiber-depleted diets.

Laboratory surveillance for wild and vaccine-derived polioviruses, January 2003-June 2004.

In 1988, the World Health Assembly resolved to eradicate poliomyelitis globally by 2000. Progress toward achieving this goal has been reported from countries where polio is endemic, and three World Health Organization (WHO) regions (Americas, Europe, and Western Pacific) appear to be free of indigenous wild poliovirus (WPV) transmission. One key strategy for eradicating polio is establishing sensitive polio surveillance systems by investigating acute flaccid paralysis (AFP) cases. To ensure that specimens from persons with AFP undergo appropriate processing for viral isolation, WHO established

Progress toward global eradication of poliomyelitis, 2002.

Since the 1988 World Health Assembly resolution to eradicate poliomyelitis globally through 2002, the number of countries where polio is endemic declined from 125 to seven, and the estimated incidence of polio decreased >99%. In 2002, the European Region became the third World Health Organization (WHO) region certified as polio-free, joining the Region of the Americas and the Western Pacific Region, certified polio-free in 1994 and 2000, respectively. Despite these achievements, a provisional total of 1,920 polio cases were reported during 2002, a substantial increase from 483 in 2001, reflect

Global progress toward certifying polio eradication and laboratory containment of wild polioviruses--August 2002-August 2003.

Since the 1988 World Health Assembly resolution to eradicate poliomyelitis, the number of countries in which polio is endemic has declined from 125 to seven. These countries are in three of the six World Health Organization (WHO) regions (i.e., African, Eastern Mediterranean, and South East Asian). The other three regions (i.e., Americas, European, and Western Pacific) were certified previously as polio-free. This report summarizes the progress made toward global certification of poliomyelitis eradication and implementation of measures to ensure laboratory containment of wild polioviruses (WPV

Member countries of the South-East Asia Region (SEAR) of WHO began accelerating polio eradication activities in 1994 and since then have made substantial progress toward that goal. By January 2001, indigenous wild poliovirus transmission in SEAR was limited to northern India, with ongoing poliovirus transmission posing a continuing threat t

Encephalocoele-- epidemiological variance in New Zealand.

Considerable variation in the epidemiology of encephalocoeles throughout the world has been described in previous studies. We analysed 46 cases of encephalocoele presenting to Auckland and Starship Children's Hospital over the last 25 years to determine if our experience differed from that seen in a typical Western population, and to determine if there was variation between the different racial groups within New Zealand. The overall incidence of encephalocoeles in the area serviced by the neurosurgical services of Auckland and Starship Children's Hospitals was 1 in 13,418 births. This rate is

Squamous Cell Bladder Cancer: A Rare Histological Variant with a Demand for Modern Cancer Therapeutics.

Bladder cancer is among the most common form of cancer worldwide and is predicted to increase in incidence and mortality over the next decade. Squamous cell carcinoma of the bladder is a rare histological variant typically associated with schistosomiasis, also known as bilharzia, a parasitic infection caused by flatworms called schistosomes or blood flukes, and is generally seen in underdeveloped nations. However, squamous cell carcinoma of the bladder still represents nearly 5% of bladder cancer diagnoses in the western world. Transitional cell carcinoma is the predominant histological varian…
