Coccidioidomycosis outbreak among inmate wildland firefighters: California, 2017.

BACKGROUND: In California, state prison inmates are employed to fight wildfires, which involves performing soil-disrupting work. Wildfires have become more common, including areas where Coccidioides, the soil-dwelling fungus that causes coccidioidomycosis, proliferates. However, work practices that place wildland firefighters at risk for coccidioidomycosis have not been investigated. METHODS: On August 17, 2017, the California Department of Public Health was notified of a cluster of coccidioidomycosis cases among Wildfire A inmate wildland firefighters. We collected data through medical recor…

Wildland fire smoke and birth defects in California.

BACKGROUND: Birth defects are a leading cause of infant mortality and an important contributor to childhood and adult morbidity. Major structural birth defects are diagnosed in 2 to 4% of infants in the United States. Environmental contaminants, including air pollution, have been suggested as potential risk factors for these anomalies. OBJECTIVE: This study investigates the association between wildfire smoke exposure, specifically fine particulate matter (PM2.5), and the risk of selected structural birth defects in the San Joaquin Valley of California. METHODS: Data were collected from parti

Using the Generalized Synthetic Control Method to Estimate the Impact of Extreme Weather Events on Population Health.

BACKGROUND: Traditional epidemiologic approaches such as time-series or case-crossover designs are often used to estimate the effects of extreme weather events but can be limited by unmeasured confounding. Quasi-experimental methods are a family of methods that leverage natural experiments to adjust for unmeasured confounding indirectly. The recently developed generalized synthetic control method that exploits the timing of an exposure is well suited to estimate the impact of acute environmental events on health outcomes. To demonstrate how this method can be used to study extreme weather even

Identification and Quantitation of 14C-Labeled Catechol Metabolites in Rat Plasma After Intranasal Instillation of Smoldering Eucalyptus Wood Smoke Extract.

The increasing frequency, duration, and intensity of wildfires over the past decade have raised significant concerns about widespread exposure to wildfire smoke. Inhalation of wildfire smoke poses a substantial risk to human health, with epidemiological studies linking exposure to cardiovascular, respiratory, and neurological dysfunction. Wildfire smoke contains hundreds of chemical compounds across diverse classes, with concentrations varying by fuel type and combustion conditions. Phenolic compounds are prominent constituents of wood smoke, and catechol is especially abundant under smolderin…

Peroxisomal abnormalities and catalase deficiency in Hutchinson-Gilford Progeria Syndrome.

Wildfire seasons have become more prolonged and intense in the western US over recent decades due to climate change and other factors. Wildfire smoke contains volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and fine particulate matter (PM2.5), which are associated with heart and lung diseases in humans and animals. The goal of this study was to assess VOCs and PM2.5 in ambient air and smoke during wildfire events on an Idaho dairy farm compared to two other Idaho cities. From 2019 to 2022, weekly passive ground-based sampling using Tenax TA sorbent tubes was conducted in three select cities of Idaho: Moscow

Phosphoinositide 3-kinase participates in l-methionine sulfoximine-induced cell death via salicylic acid mediated signaling in Nicotiana benthamiana.

Pseudomonas syringae pv. tabaci causes wildfire disease by the action of tabtoxinine-β-lactam (TβL), a non-specific bacterial toxin. To better understand the molecular mechanisms of wildfire disease and its development, we focused on the phosphoinositide 3-kinase in Nicotiana benthamiana (NbPI3K) and its potential role in the disease outbreak, using l-methionine sulfoximine (MSX) as an easily accessible mimic of the TβL action. The NbPI3K-silenced plants showed accelerated induction of cell death and necrotic lesion formation by MSX, and the expression of hin1, marker gene for the programmed c

Fire-embracers possess higher shoot flammability, lower litter flammability and a more acquisitive strategy than fire-tolerators in Pinus yunnanensis.

Plants in fire-prone environments have evolved traits to survive recurrent fires. Some traits enable plants to survive under crown fires (fire-embracer strategy), while others support persistence under surface fires (fire-tolerator strategy). Although plant fire survival strategies have been extensively studied, the manner in which they interact with other complementary survival strategies, such as flammability strategy and plant economic strategy, to facilitate plant coexistence with wildfires remain poorly investigated. Pinus yunnanensis, a fire-adapted species native to southwest China, has…

The Relationship between Climate Change and Rheumatic Disease: A Review.

BACKGROUND: Climate change has increased wildfires, air pollution, elevations in heat, and extreme weather events. While some negative effects on health are obvious, for example, on pulmonary health, climate change's impact on rheumatic disease and autoimmune health may be less visible. SUMMARY: Multiple studies suggest that increased environmental heat is associated with gout flares and with hospitalizations for gout, likely worsens cardiovascular disease and increases biomarkers associated with inflammatory conditions. Increasing air pollution, including through smoke generated by wildfires…

Biomass burning, PM2.5 peaks, and trends in lung adenocarcinoma diagnoses: an ecological study in São Paulo State, Brazil.

BACKGROUND: Lung adenocarcinoma diagnoses have increased globally despite declining tobacco exposure, raising questions about non-tobacco-related contributors. The role of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) peaks related to biomass burning in shaping population-level lung cancer patterns remains unexplored. METHODS: An ecological analysis was conducted across the Regional Health Departments of São Paulo State, Brazil, from 2000 to 2023. Histologically confirmed lung cancer cases were obtained from the state cancer registry. Temporal trends in the adenocarcinoma-to-total lung cancer ratio (ATR) w

Fuel layer specific pollutant emission factors for fire prone forest ecosystems of the western U.S. and Canada.

Wildland fires are a major source of gases and aerosols, and the production, dispersion, and transformation of fire emissions have significant ambient air quality impacts and climate interactions. The increase in wildfire area burned and severity across the United States and Canada in recent decades has led to increased interest in expanding the use of prescribed fires as a forest management tool. While the primary goal of prescribed fire use is to limit the loss of life and property and ecosystem damage by constraining the growth and severity of future wildfires, a potential additional benefi…

Formation and aqueous phase leaching of organic compounds following thermal degradation of commercial drinking water plastic pipes.

After a wildfire, drinking water quality may be impacted by the thermal degradation of polyethylene pipes in drinking water distribution systems. Volatile organic compounds (VOC) and semi-VOCs (SVOC) have been detected in at least fifteen water distribution systems following wildfires between 2017 and 2024. This study investigated if plastics could potentially contaminate water directly by submerging four commercially available plastic drinking water pipes (crosslinked polyethylene (PEX)-a, PEX-b, PEX-c, and high density polyethylene (HDPE)) and one HDPE resin in water and heating them to vari…

Climate change will increase forest disturbances in Europe throughout the 21st century.

Wildfires, insect outbreaks, and storms cause large pulses of tree mortality. Climate change amplifies these forest disturbances, yet their future magnitude and extent remain uncertain. Here, we simulated future forest disturbance regimes at 100-meter resolution across Europe using a deep learning-based simulation framework. Our results show that forest disturbances will continue to increase throughout the 21st century, with disturbed areas more than doubling relative to the recent past under an unabated continuation of climate change. Wildfires are the main agent driving future disturbance ch…

[Climate and the Heart].

Climate change is the greatest existential threat to planetary and human health, driven by shifts in the Earth's weather and atmospheric conditions due to human activities. It causes extreme temperatures, increased droughts, wildfires, dust storms, coastal flooding, storm surges, hurricanes, and various compounded events. The impacts of climate change on health are complex and include pathways that contribute to non-communicable diseases like cardiovascular disease. A collaborative effort among medical professionals, researchers, public health officials, and policymakers is crucial to mitigate…

Climate-sensitive exposures and cancer outcomes: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Climate change is intensifying environmental exposures - wildfire smoke, ambient air pollution, extreme heat, and weather-driven disasters - with plausible but incompletely quantified consequences for cancer, and no prior synthesis has jointly examined them across cancer incidence, mortality, survival, and recurrence. We systematically searched five databases for observational studies up to May 2026 of wildfire, ambient temperature, hurricane or multi-hazard disaster, precipitation anomaly, or ambient PM₂.₅ exposure and cancer outcomes, and pooled 25 effect estimates from 14 studies within ten

Future Projections of Burned Area in Europe Highlight the Importance of Human Action.

Wildfires are often a natural part of many European ecosystems, but human activities through land use, other socio-economic factors and climate change have significantly changed how fires behave. Anthropogenic climate change is already intensifying fire-prone weather and increasing wildfire risk across Europe with risk expected to grow sharply in coming decades. Past experience suggests that human action, such as fuel management and improved fire suppression capacity, can reduce wildfire spread and intensity. However, whether current or future efforts can counter rising risks under continued c…

Mercury storage in surface soils in a central Washington forest and estimated release during the 2001 Rex Creek Fire.

Recent investigations indicate that wildfires provide a significant flux of mercury (Hg) from terrestrial ecosystems to the atmosphere. However, little is known about how geographic location, climate, stand age, and tree species affect Hg accumulation prior to burning and loss during burning. Soil cores collected in sites burned during the summer 2001 Rex Creek Fire in the eastern Cascade Mountains (Washington State, USA) and in adjacent unburned control sites indicate that Hg loss from soils during the Rex Creek Fire averaged 6.7 (+/-2.5) g Hg ha(-1). This soil profile-based estimate of Hg re…
