Effects of alcohol on the processing of social threat-related stimuli in socially phobic women.

BACKGROUND: Social phobics are at a higher risk of developing alcohol problems. The mechanism promoting this association is not clear. According to Sayette (1993b), alcohol attenuates anxiety responses by disrupting initial appraisal of threatening stimuli. We used the emotional Stroop test and an implicit memory test to investigate whether alcohol hinders appraisal of social threat words in patients diagnosed with social phobia. PROCEDURE: Thirty-two women with social phobia (DSM-IV) and 32 female controls performed an emotional Stroop test either after drinking alcohol resulting in a blood

Fear activation and distraction during the emotional processing of claustrophobic fear.

We tested several hypotheses derived from the emotional processing theory of fear reduction by manipulating claustrophobic participants' focus of attention during in vivo exposure. Sixty participants displaying marked claustrophobic fear were randomized to one of four exposure conditions. Each participant received a total of 30-min of self-guided exposure 2-weeks after pretreatment testing. One group attended to threatening words and images during exposure (TW) and was compared to a control group that attended to neutral words and images (NW). A third group performed a demanding cognitive load

Neuropsychological characteristics and personality traits in pathological gambling.

INTRODUCTION: Pathological gambling disorder (PG) has been associated with fronto-temporal dysfunction and maladaptive personality traits, such as impulsivity and novelty seeking. The purpose of this study was to examine the predictive variance of neuropsychological and personality characteristics in PG. METHODS: Persons with PG (n=25) and a comparison group (n=34) were administered a battery of neuropsychological tests, the Temperament and Character Inventory, and the Barratt Impulsiveness Scale. Subjects with PG had evidence of fronto-temporal dysfunction as assessed by the Stroop, Wisconsi

The impact of a history of child abuse on cognitive performance: a cross-sectional study in older patients with a depressive, anxiety, or somatic symptom disorder.

BACKGROUND: Child abuse is a major global burden with an enduring negative impact on mental and physical health. A history of child abuse is consistently associated with worse cognitive performance among adults; data in older age groups are inconclusive. Since affective symptoms and cognitive functioning are interrelated among older persons, a synergistic effect can be assumed in patients with affective symptoms who also have suffered from child abuse. This study examines the association between a history of child abuse and cognitive performance in such patients. METHODS: Cross-sectional data

Verbal Fluency in Prelingually Deaf, Early Implanted Children and Adolescents With Cochlear Implants.

PURPOSE: Verbal fluency tasks assess the ability to quickly and efficiently retrieve words from the mental lexicon by requiring subjects to rapidly generate words within a phonological or semantic category. This study investigated differences between cochlear implant users and normal-hearing peers in the clustering and time course of word retrieval during phonological and semantic verbal fluency tasks. METHOD: Twenty-eight children and adolescents (aged 9-17 years) with cochlear implants and 33 normal-hearing peers completed measures of verbal fluency, nonverbal intelligence, speech perceptio

Antenatal and neonatal risk factors in very preterm children were associated with language difficulties at 9 years of age.

AIM: This Finnish study compared language and reading abilities between schoolchildren born at a very low gestational age (VLGA) of <32 weeks and at term and analysed any associations between antenatal and neonatal risk factors and language skills in the VLGA group. METHODS: We prospectively followed 76 children born at a VLGA and 50 children born at term when they reached a mean age of 9.0 (8.1-10.0) years. They attended mainstream schools and had no severe neurosensory disabilities. Receptive language ability, rapid naming and word reading were evaluated using standardised tests. RESULTS:

Hearing impairment and serial word recall in older adults.

The objective of this work was to study the differences in performance on a nonauditory memory task between older volunteers with and without hearing impairment. The design was cross-sectional. Three-hundred-forty-four community-dwelling adults aged 55 to 93 years, who volunteered for a mnemonic training class served as participants. Participants' hearing was tested with a Maico MA-27 portable audiometer. The dependent measure was performance on a visually presented serial word recall test. Participants were also asked to report whether they had a problem with their hearing. Hearing impairment

Word imageability is associated with expressive vocabulary in children with autism spectrum disorder.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Throughout typical development, children prioritize different perceptual, social, and linguistic cues to learn words. The earliest acquired words are often those that are perceptually salient and highly imageable. Imageability, the ease in which a word evokes a mental image, is a strong predictor for word age of acquisition in typically developing (TD) children, independent of other lexicosemantic features such as word frequency. However, little is known about the effects of imageability in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), who tend to have differences in linguis

Dynamic Temporal and Tactile Cueing: Quantifying Speech Motor Changes and Individual Factors That Contribute to Treatment Gains in Childhood Apraxia of Speech.

PURPOSE: Speech motor skill is refined over the course of practice, which is commonly reflected by increased accuracy and consistency. This research examined the relationship between auditory-perceptual ratings of word accuracy and measures of speech motor timing and variability at pre- and posttreatment in children with childhood apraxia of speech (CAS). Furthermore, the degree to which individual patterns of baseline probe word accuracy, receptive language, and cognition predicted response to treatment was explored. METHOD: Probe data were collected from seven children with CAS (aged 2;5-5;

Examining the Roles of Retrieval Practice and Post-Retrieval Feedback in Learning Among Autistic Adults.

Retrieval practice enhances learning and is most effective when feedback is provided. Despite robust evidence that retrieval practice and post-retrieval feedback benefit numerous clinical populations, these techniques have not been studied in autism. In two experiments, we measured retrieval practice and post-retrieval feedback effects on associative memory in autistic and non-autistic adults residing in the United States. Participants attempted to memorize semantically unrelated word pairs, which were then reviewed during a practice phase consisting of retrieval practice with and without feed

Testing the interhemispheric deficit theory of dyslexia using the visual half-field technique.

A deficit in interhemispheric transfer has been proposed as a neuropsychological theory of dyslexia. Interactions between the hemispheres during word recognition can be studied using the visual half-field paradigm. The well-established recognition advantage for right visual field (RVF) words over left visual field (LVF) words is thought to reflect the additional processing costs associated with callosal transfer of LVF word representations to the language-specialised left hemisphere. In addition, a further gain in recognition for bilateral presentation of a word has been attributed to cooperat

Inflectional spelling deficits in developmental dyslexia.

The goal of this study was to examine past-tense spelling deficits in developmental dyslexia and their relationship to phonological abilities, spoken morphological awareness and word specific orthographic memory. Three groups of children (28 9-year-old dyslexic, 28 chronological age-matched and 28 reading/spelling age-matched children) completed a battery of tests including spelling regularly inflected words (e.g., kissed) and matched one-morpheme words (e.g., wrist). They were also assessed on a range of tests of reading and spelling abilities and associated linguistic measures. Dyslexic chil

Neglect dyslexia: frequency, association with other hemispatial neglects, and lesion localization.

Patients with right hemisphere injury often omit or misread words on the left side of a page or the beginning letters of single words (neglect dyslexia). Our study involving a large sample of acute right hemisphere stroke investigated (1) the frequency of neglect dyslexia (ND), (2) the association between ND and other types of contralesional hemispatial neglect (CN), (3) the effect of visual field defect (VFD) on ND, and (4) the anatomical substrates for ND. Participants were 138 consecutive patients with right hemisphere stroke who underwent a neglect test battery including a test for ND. ND

Differences in Self-expression Reflect Formal Evaluation in a Fourth-year Emergency Medicine Clerkship.

INTRODUCTION: Medical schools have begun to incorporate self-reflection exercises into their curricula, with the belief that these exercises help students master the material more deeply and perform better. Reflection may be a potential learning tool for emergency medicine (EM), but there are few data supporting this hypothesis. The authors evaluated the relationship between a linguistic marker of the degree of reflection after a student's shift in an emergency department and that student's clerkship performance. METHODS: The authors conducted a retrospective case series by analyzing the perf

A multimodal language region in the ventral visual pathway.

Reading words and naming pictures involves the association of visual stimuli with phonological and semantic knowledge. Damage to a region of the brain in the left basal posterior temporal lobe (BA37), which is strategically situated between the visual cortex and the more anterior temporal cortex, leads to reading and naming deficits. Additional evidence implicating this region in linguistic processing comes from functional neuroimaging studies of reading in normal subjects and subjects with developmental dyslexia. Here we test whether the visual component of reading is essential for activation

A case of developmental deep dyslexia: what's left is right.

Cases of acquired deep dyslexia have not clearly and consistently supported any of the theoretical models. We report on a case of a 51-year-old right-handed female, L.S., with a developmental history of deep dyslexia in order to test the neuropsychological models using a visual half-field semantic priming paradigm. Word targets were primed either by a highly associated word (e.g., CLEAN-DIRTY), a weakly associated word (e.g., CLEAN-TIDY), or an unrelated word (e.g., CLEAN-FAMILY) projected to either the same or opposite visual field (VF) as the target. In normals, RVF-left hemisphere primes re

Central auditory processing and interhemispheric integration: the relationship between speech sound coding disorder and articulation disorder.

This study aims to demonstrate that speech sound disorders associated with central auditory processing disorder stem from a processing disorder in the central auditory pathways during listening, rather than from an articulation-based disorder. Included 25 children with articulation problems (WAP; 7 females, 18 males) and 25 typically developing children without articulation problems (WoAP; 10 females, 15 males), aged 5-8 years. Assessments comprised the Hacettepe Articulation Test, Scan-C subtests (Filtered Words, Auditory Figure-Ground, Competing Words, Competing Sentences), and the Denver II

Neural evidence of core foundations and conceptual change in preschool numeracy.

Symbolic numeracy first emerges as children learn the meanings of number words and how to use them to precisely count sets of objects. This development starts before children enter school and forms a foundation for lifelong mathematics achievement. Despite its importance, exactly how children acquire this basic knowledge is unclear. Here we test competing theories of early number learning by measuring event-related brain potentials during a novel number word-quantity comparison task in 3-4-year-old preschool children (N = 128). We find several qualitative differences in neural processing of nu

Cognitive deficits of pure subcortical vascular dementia vs. Alzheimer disease: PiB-PET-based study.

OBJECTIVES: Despite many neuropsychological studies to differentiate subcortical vascular dementia (SVaD) from Alzheimer disease (AD), previous studies did not eliminate confounding effects of mixed Alzheimer and vascular pathology. We aimed to investigate neuropsychological differences between patients with Pittsburgh compound B (PiB)-negative SVaD and those with PiB-positive AD. METHODS: We recruited patients who were clinically diagnosed with SVaD or AD and underwent an 11C-PiB-PET scan. All patients with SVaD fulfilled DSM-IV criteria for vascular dementia and had severe white matter hype
