OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effectiveness of levator muscle resection combined with Mustarde's double Z-plasty to correct blepharophimosis-ptosis-epicanthus inversus syndrome (BPES).
METHODS: Between March 2015 and June 2017, one-stage operation of levator muscle resection combined with Mustarde's double Z-plasty were performed on 26 children with bilateral BPES. There were 16 boys and 10 girls with an average age of 7 years (range, 4-14 years). All patients marked the four typical signs of BPES. There were 7 cases accompanied with a low nasal bridge, and 20 cases with amblyopia and strabis…

INTRODUCTION: Peters anomaly is a rare developmental malformation involving the anterior segment of the eye, which culminates in amblyopia or congenital blindness. Multiple ocular and/or systemic malformations have been observed with this anomaly, and novel comorbidities continue to be reported.
CASE PRESENTATION: The probands were monozygotic twin boys (twin I and twin II) born to consanguineous parents at 36 weeks of gestation. Coarse facial features and deep-seated eyes were noted at birth. At 6 months, ophthalmic examination revealed that both twins were unable to blink in response to lig…

BACKGROUND: This study was aimed to determine the pattern of childhood eye disorders in patients attending outpatient eye department of a ru … nd in 119 children, and the causes were refractive errors (47.1%), keratitis/corneal opacity (16%), amblyopia (14.3%), ocular trauma (11.8%), cataract (6.3%), Glaucoma (2%) and uveitis (2%).
CONCLUSION: The three most common causes of childhood ocular morbidity in this study were conjunctivitis, ocular injuries and refractive errors. These disorders requir …

PURPOSE: Strabismus in human infants is linked strongly to nasotemporal asymmetries of smooth pursuit, but many features of this co-morbidit … and a nasotemporal asymmetry of pursuit when viewing with either eye. Spatial vision was normal (no amblyopia). The 3-week duration monkeys were indistinguishable from control animals; they had normal eye alignment and symmetric pursuit. In the 12- and 24-week monkeys, the longer the duration of binocular decorrelation, the greater the pursuit asymmetry: fo …

BACKGROUND: Children whose eyes and vision are otherwise normal and who should screen negatively as normals, but who fail to compensate for their normal mild hyperopia (i.e. by normally accommodating, or rather actually failing to accommodate) will generate hyperopic crescents in a photoscreen test that can be interpreted as "positive" (for pathology) because high and asymmetric levels of hyperopia are common risk factors for amblyopia. This would therefore usually be considered a "false positive" and no further care would be offered. However, this failure to compensate, may in fact be a patho…

PURPOSE: The purpose of this article is to document the rare observation of the development, progression, retinal changes, and results of vi … t at birth. Our observations support its development in the first few years of life. The results of amblyopia therapy depend on the degree of anisometropia, the co-existence of strabismus, the compliance with penalization, and the presence of retinal abnormalities.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the visual outcome and surgical complication rates of patients with isolated inherited congenital cataract.
DESIGN: … nt.
MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Visual acuity and surgical complications (glaucoma, retinal detachment, amblyopia).
RESULTS: In this study 49.4% of patients (46.8% of those operated) achieved a visual acuity (VA) of 20/40 or better, 35.9% (36.1% of those operated) a VA between 20/50 and 20/200, and 14.7% (17.1% of those operated) worse than 20/200. Opacities t …

The less encouraging results in infants may be due to amblyopia or direct brain damage caused by the cerebrovascular incident.

The pediatrician needs to develop some skills in evaluating afferent visual functions and ocular motor abnormalities. He must know some fundamental neuro-ophthalmologic facts to prevent his patients from undergoing unnecessary diagnostic and surgical procedures. In addition, he needs to understand the fundamentals of strabismus and amblyopia, which are briefly considered in this article but are explored thoroughly elsewhere in this issue of PEDIATRIC ANNALS. First, the most common type of nystagmus in children is congenital nystagmus. These children often have a head turn or tilt. Also, it sho…

PURPOSE: To compare 11 preschool vision screening tests administered by licensed eye care professionals (LEPs; optometrists and pediatric ophthalmologists).
DESIGN: Multicenter, cross-sectional study.
PARTICIPANTS: A sample (N = 2588) of 3- to 5-year-old children enrolled in Head Start was selected to over-represent children with vision problems.
METHODS: Certified LEPs administered 11 commonly used or commercially available screening tests. Results from a standardized comprehensive eye examination were used to classify children with respect to 4 targeted conditions: amblyopia, strabismus, …

A TV monitor was used to evoke either a pattern ERG to a contrast-reversing checkerboard (PERG), or a focal ERG to alternate increases and decreases of luminance of the blank screen within a bright surround (FERG). Both responses are small (approx 2 microV) and fast (approx 50 msec to peak) and are similar in several other properties. However, they differ in timing and respond differently to changes in contrast. Each frame of a TV picture evokes a "raster ERG," even though the screen is blank. The response is focal and specific to a small central strip of the screen. It is simpler to record th

BACKGROUND: Strabismus has been described since antiquity and was attributed to obscure phenomena or anatomical anomalies. The aim of this a … ficant progress was made in the 18th century, leading to the development of the first treatment for amblyopia around 1750. This significant advance came from De Buffon, who suggested that strabismus resulted from a difference in the "strength" of the two eyes, and that covering the stronger eye would restore balance. Despite these improvements, controversie …

PURPOSE: Astigmatism can lead to meridional amblyopia, an orientation-specific visual deficit. This study investigated the effects of astigmatism on meridional anisotropy in contrast sensitivity (CS) and steady-state visual evoked potential (ssVEP) across a range of spatial frequencies.
METHODS: Thirty-two young adults with a best-corrected distance visual acuity of logMAR 0 or better were categorized into two groups: highly astigmatic (HAS, n = 16) with spherical-equivalent error (SE) ≥ -6.00 D and a cylindrical error (Cyl) ≥ 2.00 DC, and non-astigmatic (NAS, n = 16) with SE ≥ -6.00 D but Cy…
