OBJECTIVES: To establish reference values for the 2-minute walk test (2-MWT) distance and gait speed in people with a lower limb amputation (LLA) who are prosthetic ambulators. Also, to describe the differences in distance and gait speed between sexes, causes of amputation, levels of amputation, health risk classification, functional levels, and age groups.
DESIGN: Cross-sectional study.
SETTING: National meeting for people with lower limb amputation.
PARTICIPANTS: A convenience sample of unilateral people (N=101; 47 men, 54 women; mean age ± SD, 50.9±14.3 y) with an LLA; 48 had a transtibi

BACKGROUND: Many patients with a lower limb socket-suspended prothesis experience socket-related problems, such as pain, chronic skin conditions, and mechanical problems, and as a result, health-related quality of life (HRQoL) is often negatively affected. A bone-anchored prosthesis can overcome these problems and improve HRQoL, but these prostheses have potential downsides as well. A valid and reliable tool to assess potential candidates for surgery concerning a favorable risk-benefit ratio between potential complications related to bone-anchored prostheses and improvements in HRQoL is not av

BACKGROUND: There exists a need for an adjustable socket to accommodate residual limb volume and shape changes. Further, limb loss rates globally are rising and there is a large unmet need for affordable and accessible prosthetic systems.
OBJECTIVE: To assess the utility of an immediate fit modular prosthetic system (iFIT Prosthetics, LLC).
DESIGN: Prospective feasibility study involving a 2-week single-group pre-post intervention study.
SETTING: Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation gait laboratory.
PARTICIPANTS: Participants were at least 6 months post amputation and walking with a conven

Patients who have limb amputation for musculoskeletal tumours are a rare group of cancer survivors. This was a prospective cross-sectional survey of patients from five specialist centres for sarcoma surgery in England. Physical function, pain and quality of life (QOL) outcomes were collected after lower extremity amputation for bone or soft-tissue tumours to evaluate the survivorship experience and inform service provision. Of 250 patients, 105 (42%) responded between September 2012 and June 2013. From these, completed questionnaires were received from 100 patients with a mean age of 53.6 year

Overall, limb-salvage patients achieved higher functional scores compared to amputees across studies. The evidence remains limited by small sample sizes, retrospective design, and heterogeneous surgical techniques and we suggest multicentre studies for this rare bone tumors.

Background and aim The curious phenomenon phantom limbs early became the object of research, and its underlying mechanisms have been discussed over the years. The complex nature of phantom phenomena makes interpretation of the results ambiguous, regarding both prevalence and the accompanying suffering. There is a lack of knowledge about how amputees experience the meaning and consequences of phantom phenomena. The present aim, therefore, was to investigate how individuals, in an interview situation, described the qualities of possible perceived phantom phenomena, and how their experience affec…

Deciding for an amputation in case of complex regional pain syndrome type I (CRPS-I) is controversial. Evidence for favorable or adverse effects of an amputation is weak. We therefore follow a careful and well-structured decision making process. After referral of the patient with the request to amputate the affected limb, it is checked if the diagnosis CRPS-I is correct, duration of complaints is more than 1 year, all treatments described in the Dutch guidelines have been tried and if consequences of an amputation have been well considered by the patient. Thereafter the patient is assessed by

BACKGROUND: Many individuals with lower limb loss report concern with walking ability after completing structured traditional rehabilitation.
OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to explore the impact of a supervised community-based exercise program on balance, balance confidence, and gait in individuals with lower limb amputation.
STUDY DESIGN: Repeated measures.
METHODS: The supervised exercise program was offered biweekly for 6 weeks. The GAITRite System by CIR Systems, Inc., the Figure-of-8 Walk Test, and Activity-specific Balance Confidence Scale were used to measure clinical outc

BACKGROUND: Individuals with unilateral lower-limb amputation (LLA) have altered structure and physiology of their lower limbs which impairs their balance, mobility, physical function and participation in physical activities. As part of (re)habilitation, focus is given to improving gait and balance in order to enhance overall mobility, function, self-efficacy, and independence. However, the relationships amongst body impairments and physical activity limitations remain unclear, particularly in the pediatric population.
OBJECTIVE: To provide an examination of the relationships among balance an

The aims of this study were to demonstrate a theoretical basis for the design of a stance-phase controlled paediatric prosthetic knee joint, clinically test prototypes of the knee, and use a questionnaire to evaluate its efficacy. Biomechanical models were used to analyze the stance-phase control characteristics of the proposed knee, and those of three other commonly prescribed paediatric knee joint mechanisms, which were also the conventional knee joints used by the six participants of this study (mean age 10.8 years). A questionnaire pertaining to stance-phase control was designed and admini

BACKGROUND: Major lower limb amputation (MLLA) is well recognized to carry a high rate of mortality; however, little evidence explores the reasons for this. Even fewer studies look at other outcomes after MLLA such as major morbidity and functional and social recovery. This study aims to provide a contemporary analysis of these outcomes to contextualize the current state of care for MLLA in the United Kingdom.
METHODS: All index MLLAs conducted in a single tertiary vascular center over a 1-year period were entered into the study. Data including demographic details, preoperative biochemical ma

PURPOSE: To explore the goal-related strategies employed by people following lower limb amputation using a framework based on the dual-process model of adaptive self-regulation.
METHODS: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 30 individuals with a lower limb amputation.
RESULTS: Theoretical thematic analysis identified four broad assimilative/goal pursuit strategies; internal resource use, planning, technology use and help use. The most common strategies were maintaining a specific leisure activity (n=20), seeking instrumental help (n=15) and determination (n=15). Three broad categor

BACKGROUND: The initiation and progression of knee and hip arthritis have been related to limb loading during ambulation. Although altered gait mechanics with unilateral lower limb loss often result in larger and more prolonged forces through the intact limb, how these forces differ with traumatic limb loss and duration of ambulation have not been well described.
QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: The purpose of this study was to determine whether biomechanical variables of joint and limb loading (external adduction moments, vertical ground reaction force loading rates, and impulses) are larger in the intac

Servicemembers with combat-related limb loss often require substantial rehabilitative care. The prevalence of traumatic brain injury (TBI), which may impair cognitive and functional abilities, among servicemembers has increased. The primary objectives of this study were to determine the frequency of TBI among servicemembers with traumatic amputation and examine whether TBI status was associated with discharge to civilian status and medical and rehabilitative service use postamputation. U.S. servicemembers who had a combat-related amputation while deployed in Iraq or Afghanistan between 2001 an

BACKGROUND: Lower limb amputation (LLA) impacts physical activity (PA) participation and quality of life (QoL). To minimize the effects of these challenges, LLA survivors need to have opportunities to engage in appropriately tailored rehabilitation throughout their lives. However, in Sri Lanka, where a 3-decade civil war resulted in trauma-related LLA among young male soldiers, access to rehabilitation was limited to the immediate postinjury period. Developing rehabilitation interventions for these veterans requires an understanding of their current health status and rehabilitation perceptions
