Clinical role of positron emission tomography in children with tuberous sclerosis complex.

We evaluated the clinical role of positron emission tomography (PET) in 23 children with tuberous sclerosis complex. Mean age of the children when first scanned was 3.3 years. Mean age when seizures began was 8.7 months. All, except three, were at least mildly developmentally delayed. PET images were visually analyzed and compared to computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and the electroencephalogram (EEG). In two infants, interictal PET study was normal. One of the studies was performed with a low resolution early generation scanner at age 7 months; the other infant was 2

Neurotransmitter-related enzymes and indices of hypoxia in senile dementia and other abiotrophies.

Fifty-six brains from middle-aged and elderly normal as well as demented subjects and patients with provisional clinical diagnosis of other neurological and psychiatric diseases were assessed histologically. On this basis the specimens were classified into 14 diagnostic groups. A survey of potential indices of specific neurons has been carried out on these brains in which neurotransmitter-related enzymes, gamma-GTP (a potential index of capillaries) and specific proteins have been determined in up to 20 brain regions. In addition, the agonal state has been tentatively assessed by examining the

Magic and cognition: a scoping review of empirical evidence on cognitive and neural processes.

INTRODUCTION: Magic, understood as a set of effects designed to produce experiences of impossibility, offers a distinctive methodological po … edictive processing, and expectation violation, including frontal regions (DLPFC, ACC, IFG) and the caudate nucleus, providing a preliminary biological correlate to the cognitive phenomena described above. DISCUSSION: Overall, the findings support the view that magic constitutes a valid and promising methodological tool for the study of human cognition, although …

Binding potentials (BPNDs) of ventral striatum, caudate nucleus, putamen were measured with the simplified reference tissue method. Genomic DNA was extracted from subjects' blood sampling. Assessment of brain mechanisms involved in the processes of thermal sensation, pleasantness/unpleasantness, and evaluation.

The conscious perception of thermal stimuli is divided into two categories: thermal sensation (i.e., discriminative component) and pleasantn … ion was observed. Different brain regions were associated with pleasantness and unpleasantness; the caudate nucleus and frontal regions for pleasantness, and the medial frontal and anterior cingulate cortex for unpleasantness. In addition, the explicit evaluation process for the discriminative and hedonic components immediately following the cessation of local st …

Subcortical connections include the medial and lateral pulvinar, caudate nucleus, claustrum, middle and deep layers of the superior colliculus and pontine nuclei. Fetal alcohol exposure alters the induction of immediate early gene mRNA in the rat prefrontal cortex after an alternation task.

The present study examined fetal alcohol effects (FAE) on the induction of the immediate early genes (IEGs) c-fos, jun B, c-jun, and zif268 … f the prefrontal cortex (p < 0.05). FAE animals also showed a lower expression of jun B mRNA in the caudate nucleus. Significant correlations between the mean performance at the 60-sec delay and mRNA expression of c-fos, jun B, and zif268 in the prefrontal cortical regions (p < 0.05) were observed. These findings suggest that fetal alcohol exposure produces chang …

Anatomical study of the connections of the primary auditory area in the rat.

The aim of the present study was to identify in the rat the overall input-output pattern of connections of the primary auditory field, with special attention to the topographical organization of the geniculocortical auditory projection. By using cytoarchitectural criteria, three temporal cortical fields were distinguished in the rat: Te1, Te2, and Te3. The primary auditory field Te1 is characterized by a relatively specific differentiation of its layers when compared with other temporal fields. The afferent and efferent connections of Te1 were identified by using the retrograde and anterograde

The acute and chronic effects of combined antipsychotic-mood stabilizing treatment on the expression of cortical and striatal postsynaptic density genes.

The detection of changes in postsynaptic gene expression after the administration of mood stabilizers, alone or in combination with antipsychotics, and antidepressants in animal models of drug treatment, may represent a valuable strategy to explore the molecular targets of the mainstay treatments for bipolar disorder. In this study we investigated, in both acute and chronic paradigms, the expression of specific postsynaptic density genes (Homer1a, Homer1b/c, and PSD95) and genes putatively implicated in mood stabilizers mechanism of action (GSK3b, ERK) after administration of first (haloperido
