What about the art? Interpreting creative outputs in arts-based youth mental health research: the RESPOND framework.

BACKGROUND: Arts based research practices (ABRPs) are increasingly used to support children and young people (CYP) experiencing complex mental health challenges. Yet the artistic outputs generated within such research are rarely analysed, potentially limiting understanding of how creative artefacts can contribute to meaning making and programme evaluation. This study, part of the UKRI-funded CREATE project, addresses this methodological gap by examining how CYP, researchers and arts practitioners approach the interpretation of youth produced art within mental health research. METHODS: An init

Youth Alcohol, Tobacco, and Other Drug (ATOD) use rates in a municipal youth and family master plan.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to determine if community-wide activities in the Pomona Youth and Family Master Plan (PYFMP) might have influenced youth ATOD use changes in Pomona and in comparison to the US national jurisdiction. METHODS: An integrated framework encompassing social cognitive theory and the risk and protective factors approach guided the study using a pre-post quasi-experimental design and z-test analysis. Same-group and independent group comparisons within and across school grades, intervention years, and jurisdictions were conducted in a quasi-experi

Improving youth access to behavioral health services through integrated care and task shifting: protocol for a cluster-randomized stepped wedge clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: One promising solution for improving access to mental health services is integrated behavioral health models, in which behavioral health providers address mental health problems within the primary care infrastructure. Additionally, task-shifting, where non-specialists deliver certain services in the place of specialists, may be well-suited to address mental health provider shortages. The current study outlines the protocol for a hybrid type III implementation-effectiveness, cluster-randomized stepped wedge trial to evaluate the implementation of an adapted pediatric integrated beha

Characterizing biomarkers of ageing in Singaporeans: the ABIOS observational study protocol.

Ageing is the primary driver of age-associated chronic diseases and conditions. Asian populations have traditionally been underrepresented in studies understanding age-related diseases. Thus, the Ageing BIOmarker Study in Singaporeans (ABIOS) aims to characterise biomarkers of ageing in Singaporeans, exploring associations between molecular, physiological, and digital biomarkers of ageing. This is a single-centre, cross-sectional study that recruits healthy community-dwelling adults (≥ 21 years) from three different ethnic groups (Chinese, Malay, and Indian). Molecular biomarkers of ageing inc

Protocol of a randomized trial of acceptance and commitment therapy for patient fatigue interference and caregiver burden in advanced gastrointestinal cancer.

Fatigue's interference with activities, mood, and cognition is one of the most prevalent and distressing problems of patients with advanced gastrointestinal cancer. As fatigue interferes with patient functioning, family caregivers often report feeling burdened by increasing demands. Evidence-based interventions for patient fatigue interference and caregiver burden are lacking in advanced gastrointestinal cancer. In a pilot trial, telephone-based Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) showed potential for reducing patient fatigue interference and caregiver burden in this population. The curren

Codesigning a Neurocognitive Assessment Protocol for Hyperphagia: Perspectives From Stakeholders in Prader-Willi Syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Hyperphagia-characterized by an overwhelming drive to consume food-is a core feature of Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS) that profoundly impacts individuals and families. Objective measures of hyperphagia are urgently needed to support therapeutic development and improve clinical outcomes for individuals with PWS. Eye tracking may offer a scalable, noninvasive method for capturing attentional responses to food cues. By capturing visual attentional responses to food before and after eating, eye tracking may offer an indirect, objective method for assessing impairments in satiety that are

The development of a novel scale to assess intra- and interpersonal emotion regulation strategies: The Emotion Regulation Strategy Scale (ERSS).

Existing emotion regulation research focuses on how individuals use different strategies to manage their own emotions-also called intra-personal emotion regulation. However, people often leverage connections with others to regulate their own emotions-interpersonal emotion regulation. The goal of the present studies was to develop a comprehensive and efficient scale-the Emotion Regulation Strategies Scale (ERSS)-to assess nine specific emotion regulation strategies that individuals use both intra-personally and interpersonally. These emotion regulation strategies were cognitive reappraisal, dis

Specificity of attentional control deficits in predicting symptoms of social anxiety.

BACKGROUND: The extent to which individuals can flexibly allocate their attention towards adaptive cues in the social environment may play an important role in the maintenance of social anxiety. Attentional control (AC) describes the top-down ability to regulate one's attention and cognitive resources. Although low AC has been linked to psychopathology broadly, the specific relation between AC and social anxiety disorder (SAD) remains poorly understood. The present study aimed to clarify the role of AC in SAD by examining unique associations between AC and several facets of social anxiety, abo

Dynamic and progressive changes in thalamic functional connectivity over the first five years of psychosis.

The early stage of psychosis (ESP) is a critical period where effective intervention has the most favorable impact on outcomes. Thalamic connectivity abnormalities have been consistently found in psychosis, and are associated with clinical symptoms and cognitive deficits. However, most studies consider ESP patients as a homogeneous population and fail to take the duration of illness into account. In this study, we aimed to capture the progression of thalamic connectivity changes over the first five years of psychosis. Resting-state functional MRI scans were collected from 156 ESP patients (44

Lagged kernel machine regression for identifying time windows of susceptibility to exposures of complex mixtures.

The impact of neurotoxic chemical mixtures on children's health is a critical public health concern. It is well known that during early life, toxic exposures may impact cognitive function during critical time intervals of increased vulnerability, known as windows of susceptibility. Knowledge on time windows of susceptibility can help inform treatment and prevention strategies, as chemical mixtures may affect a developmental process that is operating at a specific life phase. There are several statistical challenges in estimating the health effects of time-varying exposures to multi-pollutant m

Monosomy 18p is a risk factor for facioscapulohumeral dystrophy.

BACKGROUND: 18p deletion syndrome is a rare disorder caused by partial or full monosomy of the short arm of chromosome 18. Clinical symptoms caused by 18p hemizygosity include cognitive impairment, mild facial dysmorphism, strabismus and ptosis. Among other genes, structural maintenance of chromosomes flexible hinge domain containing 1 (SMCHD1) is hemizygous in most patients with 18p deletions. Digenic inheritance of a SMCHD1 mutation and a moderately sized D4Z4 repeat on a facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy (FSHD) permissive genetic background of chromosome 4 can cause FSHD type 2 (FSHD2)

Voluntary saccade inhibition deficits correlate with extended white-matter cortico-basal atrophy in Huntington's disease.

The ability to inhibit automatic versus voluntary saccade commands in demanding situations can be impaired in neurodegenerative diseases such as Huntington's disease (HD). These deficits could result from disruptions in the interaction between basal ganglia and the saccade control system. To investigate voluntary oculomotor control deficits related to the cortico-basal circuitry, we evaluated early HD patients using an interleaved pro- and anti-saccade task that requires flexible executive control to generate either an automatic response (look at a peripheral visual stimulus) or a voluntary re

Prefrontal cortical network connections: key site of vulnerability in stress and schizophrenia.

The symptoms of schizophrenia involve profound dysfunction of the prefrontal cortex (PFC). PFC networks create our "mental sketch pad", and PFC dysfunction contributes to symptoms such as cognitive deficits, thought disorder, delusions and hallucinations. Neuropathological studies of schizophrenia have shown marked loss of dendritic spines in deep layer III, the sublayer where PFC microcircuits reside. The microcircuits consist of recurrent excitatory pyramidal cell networks that interconnect on spines, and excite each other via NMDA receptor signaling. The pyramidal cell persistent firing is

Predictors of nonadherence to screening colonoscopy.

BACKGROUND: Colonoscopy has become a preferred colorectal cancer (CRC) screening modality. Little is known about why patients who are referred for colonoscopy do not complete the recommended procedures. Prior adherence studies have evaluated colonoscopy only in combination with flexible sigmoidoscopy, failed to differentiate between screening and diagnostic procedures, and have examined cancellations/no-shows, but not nonscheduling, as mechanisms of nonadherence. METHODS: Sociodemographic predictors of screening completion were assessed in a retrospective cohort of 647 patients referred for c
