The CAD (Cinnamyl Alcohol Dehydrogenase) gene family is a key determinant for lignin biosynthesis in plants. In legumes, CAD enzymes are involved in the development of vascular tissues such as xylem and Casparian strip and they contribute to the production of antimicrobial and antifungal compounds. Thereby, it offers defense against pathogens and pests. Despite their biological significance, a comparative genome-wide analysis of the CAD gene family in Medicago truncatula and Lotus japonicus has not been explored. Therefore, we conducted a comparative genome-wide study to investigate the charac

Nitrogen is the principal mineral nutrient limiting maize yield formation and effective nitrogen management is thus key for maximizing yield. However, conventional urea releases nutrients rapidly and the supply of nutrients is often mismatched with crop demand, leading to early-stage nutrient loss and late-stage nitrogen deficiency. Therefore, reasonable nitrogen management is a key measure for increasing maize yield. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of different ratios of controlled-release fertilizer (CRF) and urea on changes in the accumulation, distribution, and translocation of dr

BACKGROUND: Ruminal microbial communities enriched on lignocellulosic biomass have shown considerable promise for the discovery of microorganisms and enzymes involved in digesting cell wall compounds, a key bottleneck in the development of second-generation biofuels and bioproducts, enabling a circular bioeconomy. Cardoon (Cynara cardunculus) is a promising inedible energy crop for current and future cellulosic biorefineries and the emerging bioenergy and bioproducts industries. The rumen microbiome can be considered an anaerobic "bioreactor", where the resident microbiota carry out the depoly

Among abiotic stresses, salinity is a significant limiting factor affecting agricultural productivity, survival, and production, resulting in significant economic losses. Considering the salinity problem, the goal of this study was to identify a halotolerant beneficial soil bacterium to circumvent salinity-induced phytotoxicity. Here, strain KR-17 (having an irregular margin; a mucoid colony; Gm-ve short rod; optimum temperature, 30°C; pH 7.0; no any pigmentation; showed a positive response to citrate utilization, catalase, starch, sucrose, lactose, and dextrose, etc.) recovered from rhizosphe

Oryza sativa L. is a worldwide food-crop frequently growing in cadmium (Cd)/arsenic (As) polluted soils, with its root-system as the first target of the pollutants. Root-system development involves the establishment of optimal indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) levels, also requiring the conversion of the IAA natural precursor indole-3-butyric acid (IBA) into IAA, causing nitric oxide (NO) formation. Nitric oxide is a stress-signaling molecule. In rice, a negative interaction of Cd or As with endogenous auxin has been demonstrated, as some NO protective effects. However, a synergism between the natura

Smallholder dairy production represents a promising income generating activity for poor farmers in the developing world. Because of the perishable nature of milk, marketing arrangements for collection, distribution and sale are important for enhanced livelihoods in the smallholder dairy sector. In this study we examined the relationship between market quality and basic feeding and breeding practices at farm level. We define market quality as the attractiveness and reliability of procurement channels and associated input supply arrangements. We took as our study countries, India with its well-d

Summer heat stress constrains ginger production. Although calcium (Ca) enhances stress tolerance in various crops, its effects on heat tolerance, yield, and quality in ginger remain unclear. A pot experiment was conducted using Zingiber officinale cv. 'Laiwu Big Ginger' to evaluate Ca effects on plant growth and quality under natural summer high-temperature conditions. Six Ca rates (0, 15.2, 30.5, 45.7, 60.9, and 76.2 mmol Ca2+ plant-1) were established using calcium nitrate tetrahydrate [Ca(NO3)2·4H2O]. Seedling-stage physiological and biochemical parameters were analyzed with linear mixed-ef

Flooding response in oil palm involves a subtle or broad transcriptional strategy, each associating differently to yield stability across flooding depths. ADH1 baseline expression discriminates these response types. Oil palm is among the world's most productive oil crops, yet information on its response to flooding is limited despite increasing flooding frequency associated with climate change. In this study, leaf transcriptomes from oil palms in the field sampled under non-flooding, low-flooding, and high-flooding conditions revealed two distinct transcriptomic response types, designated as G

The present study aimed to evaluate the quality and nutritional properties of guava slices dried in a greenhouse solar dryer (operated under mixed and direct modes) and an electric stove at 50°C. The results showed that mixed-mode solar drying resulted in greater retention of vitamin C (112.60 mg/100 g), carotenoids (0.37 mg/g), and antioxidant activity (95.77%). The proximate analysis showed that mixed-mode drying yielded better nutrient results, such as protein (3.29%), fat (3.33%), and ash (3.50%). The colorimetric analysis revealed that guava samples dried in mixed-mode solar drying exhibi

Uncontrolled open-field burning of agricultural residues remains a pervasive source of air pollutants and greenhouse gases in Korea, particularly for high-burning-ratio crops such as perilla, pepper, pear, grape, and apple residues. This study provides a comprehensive assessment of the environmental and energy implications of replacing open-field burning with biochar production from these major residue streams. First, mass- and energy-normalized emission factors for CO, CH₄, CO₂, NOₓ, N₂O, and particulate matter were quantified for both in-situ combustion and biochar combustion scenarios. Alth

Somatic embryogenesis (SE) underpins plant regeneration, genetic transformation and virus-free seedling propagation, yet efficient SE systems using root explants remain lacking in Allium fistulosum. Here, we establish and characterize two novel high-efficiency SE pathways mediated by frog egg-like bodies (FELBs) and rhizoid tubers (RTBs) in A. fistulosum, and clarify the regulatory effects of NAA, 2,4-D and TDZ on morphogenesis and plant regeneration. Screening of multiple explants demonstrated that only root segments and stem tips could form translucent mucilaginous callus, while single 2,4-D

Plant receptor kinases perceive diverse peptide signals to coordinate stress responses and developmental programs. The HAESA-LIKE 3 (HSL3/NUT) receptor recognizes CTNIP/SCREW phytocytokines, which are disulfide-constrained peptides that regulate immune signaling and stress adaptation. However, how HSL3 distinguishes these structurally constrained peptides from linear signaling peptides remains unknown. Here, we report near-atomic-resolution cryo-electron microscopy structures of HSL3 in the apo and CTNIP448-70-bound states at ∼2.6 Å, using Arabidopsis CTNIP4 as a representative family member,

The use of azoles in the European Union and European Economic Area (EU/EEA) other than as human medicines has raised concerns about emergence and spread of azole-resistant Aspergillus species. EU agencies, with the support of JRC, reviewed the evidence and provided conclusions and recommendations on this topic. Although incomplete, data from 2010 to 2021 showed that around 120,000 tonnes of azoles were sold in EU/EEA for uses other than as human medicines. The majority are used as plant protection products (119,000 tonnes), with a stable temporal trend. Evidence supported a link between enviro

Aging in crops like tea and tobacco involves the production of secondary metabolites, with symbiotic microbes playing a key role. However, their dynamic changes and correlation with metabolites during aging remain poorly understood. This study investigates changes in microbial communities, aroma compounds, and protein expression during tobacco leaf aging using artificial accelerated aging techniques, which combine GC-MS, metagenomics, and metaproteomics methods. We identified 62 aroma compounds with distinct change patterns and observed significant changes in the structure of symbiotic bacteri

Pyroligneous acid (PA) is rich in bioactive compounds and known to have the potential to improve crop productivity and phytochemical content. However, the synergistic effect of PA and fertilizer has not been thoroughly studied. In this study, we assessed the biostimulatory effect of different rates of foliar PA application (i.e., 0, 0.25, 0.5, 1, and 2% PA/ddH2O (v/v)) combined with full rate (i.e., 0.63, 0.28, 1.03 g) and half rate of nitrogen-phosphorus-potassium (NPK) fertilizer on the yield and nutritional quality of greenhouse-grown tomato (Solanum lycopersicum 'Scotia'). Over the past decades, concern has been increasing over reported declines in aboveground biodiversity on farmland. In many regions, data on the toxicity of pesticides to honeybees (Apis mellifera), but not wider nontarget arthropod (NTA) data, are required for pesticide registration. In Europe, the effects of pesticides on NTAs and honeybees have been the subject of regulatory risk assessment for more than 30 years, resulting in a large database. Although insecticides may be expected to affect NTA populations, solely identifying insecticidal modes of action for further NTA testing would result
