Fencing off critical source areas reduces faecal contamination and reshapes microbial communities in agricultural headwater catchments.

Agricultural headwater catchments are critical sources of microbial contamination to surface waters, yet the effectiveness of mitigation practices in these small, dynamic systems is not well defined. A paired-catchment experimental design was used to assess the effects of permanent fencing of critical source areas (CSAs) in ephemeral streams within deer-grazed pastures. Faecal, soil, and freshwater samples were collected over four years, comprising two years of baseline monitoring and two years following mitigation. Viable Escherichia coli concentrations were measured in faeces, soil and water

First report of SARS-CoV-2 co-infection with chronic dermatophytosis in a lion (Panthera leo) ex situ at Colombia.

BACKGROUND: Coronaviruses affecting humans traditionally caused mild respiratory infections. However, new zoonotic strains such as MERS-CoV (2012) and SARS-CoV-2 (2019) have led to severe acute respiratory syndromes. Since 2020, SARS-CoV-2 has been detected in several animal species, including pets (dogs, cats, ferrets), zoo animals (lions, tigers, snow leopards), and wild fauna (deer). Felids appear especially susceptible, with confirmed infections and deaths in large cats under human care. This raises concerns about reverse zoonosis and the need for strict biosecurity in zoological instituti

Factors shaping home ranges of Eurasian lynx (Lynx lynx) in the Western Carpathians.

Understanding how large carnivores utilize space is crucial for management planning in human-dominated landscape and enhances the accuracy of population size estimates. However, Eurasian lynx display a large inter-population variation in the size of home ranges across their European range which makes extrapolation to broader areas of a species distribution problematic. This study evaluates variations in home range size for 35 Eurasian lynx in the Western Carpathians during 2011-2022 based on GPS telemetry and explains how intrinsic and environmental factors shape lynx spatial behaviour when fa

Connecting People to Food: A Network Approach to Alleviating Food Deserts.

INTRODUCTION: In 2020, 13.8 million people in the United States struggled with food security. This means they were uncertain whether their food needs would be met. Where someone lives can influence struggles with food security. Food deserts are census tracts that experience high rates of poverty (20 percent of residents at/below poverty thresholds) and low access to grocery stores with nutritious foods. Food deserts and insecurity disproportionately affect disadvantaged communities and may contribute to health issues like diabetes, high blood pressure, and obesity. Public policies can be utili

Cervus and cucumis peptides ameliorates bone erosion in experimental arthritis by inhibiting osteoclastogenesis.

OBJECTIVE: Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease characterised by inflammation and bone loss, leading to joint destruction and deformity. The cervus and cucumis polypeptide (CCP) injection, one of the traditional Chinese medicine injections combined extracts from deer horn and sweet melon seeds, is widely used to treat arthritis and bone fracture in China. The present study investigated the therapeutic efficacy and mechanism of CCP on pathological immune cells and bone homoeostasis in rodent experimental arthritis. METHODS: The effects of CCP (4 mg/kg and 2 mg/kg) on clinical arthriti

Potential Mechanism of Detoxification of Cyanide Compounds by Gut Microbiomes of Bamboo-Eating Pandas.

Gut microbes can enhance the ability of hosts to consume secondary plant compounds and, therefore, expand the dietary niche breadth of mammalian herbivores. The giant and red pandas are bamboo-eating specialists within the mammalian order Carnivora. Bamboo contains abundant plant secondary metabolites (e.g., cyanide-containing compounds). However, Carnivora species, including the giant panda, have deficient levels of rhodanese (one of the essential cyanide detoxification enzymes) in their tissues compared with the same tissues of herbivores. Here, we make a comparative analysis of 94 gut metag

Large-scale health disparities associated with Lyme disease and human monocytic ehrlichiosis in the United States, 2007-2013.

Promoting health equity is a fundamental public health objective, yet health disparities remain largely overlooked in studies of vectorborne diseases, especially those transmitted by ticks. We sought to identify health disparities associated with Lyme disease and human monocytic ehrlichiosis, two of the most pervasive tickborne diseases within the United States. We used general linear mixed models to measure associations between county-level disease incidence and six variables representing racial/ethnic and socioeconomic characteristics of counties (percent white non-Hispanic; percent with a b

Endoplasmic Reticulum Stress Induced Synthesis of a Novel Viral Factor Mediates Efficient Replication of Genotype-1 Hepatitis E Virus.

Hepatitis E virus (HEV) causes acute hepatitis in many parts of the world including Asia, Africa and Latin America. Though self-limiting in normal individuals, it results in ~30% mortality in infected pregnant women. It has also been reported to cause acute and chronic hepatitis in organ transplant patients. Of the seven viral genotypes, genotype-1 virus infects humans and is a major public health concern in South Asian countries. Sporadic cases of genotype-3 and 4 infection in human and animals such as pigs, deer, mongeese have been reported primarily from industrialized countries. Genotype-5

RETROSPECTIVE ANALYSIS OF THE EPIDEMIOLOGIC LITERATURE, 1990-2015, ON WILDLIFE-ASSOCIATED DISEASES FROM THE REPUBLIC OF KOREA.

To assess the status of research on wildlife diseases in the Republic of Korea (ROK) and to identify trends, knowledge gaps, and directions for future research, we reviewed epidemiologic publications on wildlife-associated diseases in the ROK. We identified a relatively small but rapidly increasing body of literature. The majority of publications were focused on public or livestock health and relatively few addressed wildlife health. Most studies that focused on human and livestock health were cross-sectional whereas wildlife health studies were mostly case reports. Fifteen diseases notifiable

Biological effects and use of PrPSc- and PrP-specific antibodies generated by immunization with purified full-length native mouse prions.

The prion agent is the infectious particle causing spongiform encephalopathies in animals and humans and is thought to consist of an altered conformation (PrP(Sc)) of the normal and ubiquitous prion protein PrP(C). The interaction of the prion agent with the immune system, particularly the humoral immune response, has remained unresolved. Here we investigated the immunogenicity of full-length native and infectious prions, as well as the specific biological effects of the resulting monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) on the binding and clearance of prions in cell culture and in in vivo therapy. Immuni

Ixodes ricinus ticks are reservoir hosts for Rickettsia helvetica and potentially carry flea-borne Rickettsia species.

BACKGROUND: Hard ticks have been identified as important vectors of rickettsiae causing the spotted fever syndrome. Tick-borne rickettsiae are considered to be emerging, but only limited data are available about their presence in Western Europe, their natural life cycle and their reservoir hosts. Ixodes ricinus, the most prevalent tick species, were collected and tested from different vegetation types and from potential reservoir hosts. In one biotope area, the annual and seasonal variability of rickettsiae infections of the different tick stages were determined for 9 years. RESULTS: The DNA

Genetic characterization of severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome virus in ticks from livestock environments in South Korea.

INTRODUCTION: Severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS), caused by the SFTS virus (SFTSV), is a highly fatal tick-borne zoonosis that poses a substantial public health threat. Although livestock husbandry environments represent important ecological settings for viral maintenance and circulation, molecular surveillance within these settings remains insufficient. METHODS: We conducted an annual systematic entomological and molecular survey from March to October between 2023 and 2025 in South Korea, targeting 204 environments adjacent to cattle, horse, deer, goat, and sheep farms. Histopathologic and Genomic Characterization of a Novel Caprine Astrovirus Identified in a Boer Goat Kid in Illinois, United States.

Astroviruses are non-enveloped, positive-sense single-stranded RNA viruses known to infect various mammals and birds, including humans, often causing gastrointestinal disorders. In recent years, astroviruses have also been linked to neurological and respiratory diseases across several species, including ruminants, mink, deer, and other mammals. Notably, astrovirus infections in goats have been documented in countries such as Switzerland and China, where novel genotypes have been identified in fecal samples. However, their role in the context of disease remains unclear, and reports focusing sol

Children's emerging concepts of resilience: insights from using body mapping in an East London cohort sample of 7-10-year-old children.

BACKGROUND: Understanding resilience factors in children is essential for developing early mental health interventions. Middle childhood is an understudied developmental stage, with many quantitative measures lacking validation for this age group and not capturing diverse experiences. This study aimed to use body mapping, an arts-based method, as a novel approach to understand 7-10-year-old children's concepts of resilience (including definitions and factors that contribute to resilience) in East London. An advisory group of six children commented on the findings. METHODS: Body mapping was in

Effect of twin or singleton pregnancy on progesterone levels in the blood of Reem gazelles (Gazelle subgutturosa marica) at different stages of pregnancy.

BACKGROUND: The progesterone (PBP) hormone is responsible for maintaining pregnancy. By measuring its level, a single or twin pregnancy in deer can be diagnosed based on its blood PBP concentration. AIM: This study aimed to determine plasma blood PBP levels in Reem gazelles (Gazella subgutturosa marica). METHODS: Thirteen pregnant females (G. subgutturosa marica) aged 2-4 years were used. The experiments were conducted from October 2021 to April 2022 in Babylon, Iraq. Jugular venipuncture was used to collect ten milliliters of EDTA-free blood samples. The samples were then centrifuged at 3,0

Risk factors associated with Cryptosporidium species and genotypes in Tennessee, 2018-2023.

BACKGROUND: Cryptosporidiosis is a leading cause of zoonotic illness. We aimed to describe cryptosporidiosis illnesses in Tennessee by species and molecular subtypes, and explore epidemiological risk factors. METHODS: Cryptosporidium is a reportable condition in Tennessee. Cases are investigated and molecular subtyping is performed. Collected data includes patient demographics, risk factors, laboratory results, and Cryptosporidium species and subtype. We described Tennessee residents with cryptosporidiosis during 2018-2023. To explore risk factors, we used binomial probabilities to compare ex

PARASITES OF AN ENDANGERED HARVEST MOUSE (REITHRODONTOMYS RAVIVENTRIS HALICOETES) IN A NORTHERN CALIFORNIA MARSH.

Disease may limit recovery of endangered species. We surveyed parasites in the federally endangered salt marsh harvest mouse (SMHM; Reithrodontomys raviventris halicoetes) and sympatric rodents in Suisun Marsh (Solano County, California, USA) from April 2018 through March 2019. We investigated individual SMHM risk factors (age, sex, reproductive status, and body condition) for infection and relationships among the estimated parasite prevalence and season and habitat management (natural tidal habitats versus diked, nontidal habitats). We captured 625 individual rodents, including 439 SMHM, and

Human influence and biotic homogenization drive the distribution of Escherichia coli virulence genes in natural habitats.

Cattle are the main reservoirs for Shiga-toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC), the only known zoonotic intestinal E. coli pathotype. However, there are other intestinal pathotypes that can cause disease in humans, whose presence has been seldom investigated. Thus, our aim was to identify the effects of anthropic pressure and of wild and domestic ungulate abundance on the distribution and diversity of the main human E. coli pathotypes and nine of their representative virulence genes (VGs). We used a quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR) for the direct detection and quantification of the genus-sp

Serological survey of Toxoplasma gondii and Besnoitia besnoiti in a wildlife conservation area in southern Portugal.

Toxoplasma gondii and Besnoitia besnoiti are closely related apicomplexan protozoa. T. gondii is a zoonotic pathogen which may cause serious disease in man and warm-blooded animals, including wild species. B. besnoiti causes bovine besnoitiosis, an emergent disease in Europe, which is linked to important production losses. Unlike T. gondii, the life cycle of B. besnoiti remains a mystery, since the definitive host has not yet been identified. The aim of this work was to determine the seroprevalence of T. gondii in wildlife and feral cats from a hitherto unsampled area in southern Portugal and
