A coparent intervention to prevent prenatal stress and depression symptoms in families with lower incomes.

BACKGROUND: Societal inequities place some groups of expectant parents, such as those who experience discrimination based on race and class, at greater risk for prenatal depression and stress. OBJECTIVE: The goal of this pilot trial was to assess the feasibility and efficacy of an intervention to reduce depressive symptoms and stress (self-reported and physiological) among families with low-income during early pregnancy. METHOD: Participants included 46 dyads, 24 of whom were assigned to the PREParing for Parenthood (PREP) intervention group and 22 to the usual care group. PREP consisted of

Intimate partner violence, maternal depression, and pathways to children's language ability at 10 years.

Intimate partner violence (IPV) between parents is associated with poorer child language development. This study aimed to examine pathways from IPV and maternal depressive symptoms in children's 1st year to language skills at 10 years. Pathways were examined via IPV, maternal depressive symptoms, and maternal involvement in home learning activities (e.g., reading, storytelling) at age 4. A secondary aim was to examine whether these pathways differed by child gender. Data were drawn from 1,507 mothers and their firstborn children participating in a community-based prospective longitudinal study

Skin-to-skin contact and infant emotional and cognitive development in chronic perinatal distress.

OBJECTIVE: We examined whether the timing of maternal-neonate skin-to-skin contact (SSC) predicts infant emotional and cognitive development in the context of chronic maternal perinatal stress and depressive symptoms. STUDY DESIGN: This secondary analysis included data from a group-based prenatal care clinical trial for 37 pregnant women with low household income. Mothers completed the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS), and the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D) during the third trimester and postpartum. After birth, they reported timing of SSC, and completed the Infant Beha

A systematic review of concepts related to women's empowerment in the perinatal period and their associations with perinatal depressive symptoms and premature birth.

BACKGROUND: The perinatal period, which we here define as pregnancy and the first year postpartum, is a time in women's lives that involves significant physiological and psychosocial change and adjustment, including changes in their social status and decision-making power. Supporting women's empowerment at this particular time in their lives may be an attractive opportunity to create benefits for maternal and infant health outcomes such as reductions in perinatal depressive symptoms and premature birth rates. Thus, we here systematically review and critically discuss the literature that invest

The role of maternal anxiety and depressive disorders prior to and during pregnancy and perinatal psychopathological symptoms for early infant diseases and drug administration.

BACKGROUND: Maternal mental health prior to and during pregnancy has been shown to be associated with inflammatory diseases and gastrointestinal complaints in the offspring. Unfortunately, many studies merely focused on perinatal distress without consideration of lifetime anxiety and depressive disorders. AIMS: To prospectively investigate associations of anxiety and depressive disorders prior to and during pregnancy as well as perinatal distress with infants' inflammatory diseases, gastrointestinal complaints and corresponding drug administration. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective-longitudinal stud

Biological and environmental initial conditions shape the trajectories of cognitive and social-emotional development across the first years of life.

Human development is thought to evolve from the dynamic interchange of biological dispositions and environmental provisions; yet the effects of specific biological and environmental birth conditions on the trajectories of cognitive and social-emotional growth have rarely been studied. We observed 126 children at six time-points from birth to 5 years. Intelligence, maternal sensitivity, and child social engagement were repeatedly tested. Effects of neonatal vagal tone (VT) and maternal postpartum depressive symptoms on growth-rates were assessed. Cognitive development showed a substantial growt

Examining Relationships Between Multiple Adverse Social Determinants of Health, Maternal Depressive Symptoms, Timing of Solid Food Introduction, and Breastfeeding Duration Among Black or African American Women.

BACKGROUND: Breastfeeding has been shown to reduce the risk of several diseases-including those that disproportionately affect Black or African American women and children. Adverse social determinants of health (SDOH) have been associated with a higher prevalence of postpartum depressive symptoms and are negatively associated with breastfeeding outcomes and the timing of solid food introduction. Prior research has focused on each individual SDOH in isolation and has not, to the best of our knowledge, examined the mediating role of depressive symptoms and timing of introduction to solid foods.

Predicting peripartum depression using elastic net regression and machine learning: the role of remnant cholesterol.

BACKGROUND: Traditional statistical methods have dominated research on peripartum depression (PPD), but innovative approaches may provide deeper insights. This study aims to predict the impact factors of PPD using elastic net regression (ENR) combined with machine learning (ML) model. METHODS: This longitudinal study was conducted from June 2020 to May 2023, involving healthy pregnant women in the first trimester, followed up until the completion of the assessment in the second trimester. PPD symptoms were assessed using the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS). Features with p <.05 fr

Maternal perinatal depression and the risk of disruptive behavioural disorder symptoms among offspring: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Inconsistent findings exist regarding the association between maternal perinatal depression and the risk of Disruptive Behavioural Disorder (DBD) symptoms, including Conduct Disorder (CD) and Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD) symptoms in children and adolescents. This study aimed to estimate the overall risk of DBD symptoms in offspring of mothers who have experienced perinatal depression. PubMed, Medline, Embase, Scopus, CINAHL, and Psych INFO were searched. A meta-analysis was conducted using inverse variance-weighted random-effects models. The odds ratios (OR) with 95 % confidence interva

[THE ADDED VALUE OF ART THERAPY FOR MOTHERS WITH POST-PARTUM DEPRESSION IN ARABIC SOCIETY IN ISRAEL].

INTRODUCTION: Post-partum depression (PPD) is a neurotic condition, which appears usually within two months after the delivery. This is the most common complication of pregnancy and puerperium, affecting about 15 to 20% of the mothers. In Israel, with some 150,000 deliveries annually, this relates to about 20,000 women each year. Routine treatment with psychotherapy (PT), helps about two thirds of these women. Continuation of the maternal symptoms affects the baby's development, and the rest of the family as well. OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the additional value of a

Evolution of the perinatal care system.

BACKGROUND: The perinatal support system for mothers and babies, which has evolved over the past 6 years at the Morioka Red Cross Hospital, is described. METHODS: Between July 1995 and August 1999, 1864 puerperal mothers at the Morioka Red Cross Hospital responded to the Maternity Blues Scale (MB) and the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) at 1 month, each with an open comment form. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: There was a significant difference in each MB item between individuals who scored above 9 points and those who scored lower in the EPDS. Those who later scored high in the EPDS ha
