Dermatoglyphic abnormalities in the fetal alcohol syndrome.

Dermatoglyphics of 19 male and 23 female patients with fetal alcohol syndrome were compared with those of matched controls. Both male and female patients differed in several of the dermatoglyphic characteristics from their sex-matched controls. The abnormalities of dermatoglyphics reported here constitute a valuable marker trait of the teratogenic effect of the alcohol on fetal development and provide additional diagnostic signs for the fetal alcohol syndrome.

In utero alcohol heightens juvenile reactivity.

The behavioral teratogenicity of ethanol was studied in a laboratory model of the fetal alcohol syndrome. Pregnant rats were placed in one of three groups: Ethanol (4 g ethanol/kg intubated twice daily; Purina Chow ad lib.); Sucrose (7 g sucrose/kg intubated instead of ethanol; Untreated (no intubations; Purina Chow ad lib.). Ethanol offspring did not differ from either control group in neonatal body weight or developmental measures. On Day 35, 2 female offspring per litter were tested for reactivity to acoustic startle stimuli. Activity was measured during the pre-stimulus foreperiod and duri

Ethanol induces cytostasis of cortical basal progenitors.

BACKGROUND: Developing brain is a major target for alcohol's actions and neurological/functional abnormalities include microencephaly, reduced frontal cortex, mental retardation and attention-deficits. Previous studies have shown that ethanol altered the lateral ventricular neuroepithelial cell proliferation. However, the effect of ethanol on subventricular basal progenitors which generate majority of the cortical layers is not known. METHODS: We utilized spontaneously immortalized rat brain neuroblasts obtained from cultures of 18-day-old fetal rat cerebral cortices using in vitro ethanol ex

Correspondence of parent report and laboratory measures of inattention and hyperactivity in children with heavy prenatal alcohol exposure.

Clinical research and practice support a multi-method approach to validating behavioral problems in children. We examined whether parent-reported symptoms of hyperactivity and inattention (using the Disruptive Behavior Disorder Rating Scale) were substantiated by objective laboratory measures [hyperactivity measured by wrist-worn actigraphy (ACT) and inattention assessed using a 20-minute continuous performance task (CPT)] in three age- and demographically-matched groups of school-age children: children with prenatal alcohol exposure (AE), non-exposed children with idiopathic ADHD (ADHD), and

Knowledge of fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) among natives in Northern Manitoba.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate knowledge about fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) among Natives in northern Manitoba. A second objective was to determine if there are age or gender differences in level of knowledge. A third objective was to examine the relationship between knowledge about FAS and reported frequency of drug and alcohol use during pregnancy. METHOD: A nonrandom sample of 466 Natives from northern Manitoba was interviewed about drug and alcohol use during pregnancy and knowledge of FAS. The sample was proportionately representative of the 26 northern reserves, with an approximately equal n

Alcohol and the fetus in the west of Scotland.

Forty children with the fetal alcohol syndrome were identified in the west of Scotland. All were growth retarded and had abnormal facial features, and all those who were tested were found to have neurological or developmental abnormalities. Two children died of associated physical defects. Most of the mothers were socially deprived, and all had drunk heavily while pregnant. Three women had subsequently died. These findings provide clear evidence that in the west of Scotland maternal alcohol abuse during pregnancy is a significant cause of morbidity and mortality in children.

Low-dose thyroxine attenuates autism-associated adverse effects of fetal alcohol in male offspring's social behavior and hippocampal gene expression.

BACKGROUND: Fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) is characterized by neurodevelopmental anomalies manifesting in cognitive and behavioral deficits in the offspring with diverse severities. Social behavior is affected in FASD, and these deficits overlap with those of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Identifying some of the molecular characteristics related to ASD in an animal model of FASD could ultimately provide details on the underlying molecular mechanisms of both disorders that could lead to novel treatments. METHODS: Pregnant Sprague-Dawley rats received the following diets: control (C;

The Eastern Door Center: re-balancing the wheel-a Two-Eyed Seeing approach to FASD and other disorders related to transgenerational adversity.

In 2015, the Canadian Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) called for immediate action to address the lack of access to health services for Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) in Indigenous communities. They called for the provision of culturally safe, community-based, FASD diagnostic, intervention and prevention services. FASD is a neurodevelopmental condition that can affect all aspects of functioning. The term refers to a spectrum of conditions occurring as a result of prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) and associated risk factors. PAE can affect both physical and mental health leading

Early Postnatal Ethanol Exposure in Mice Induces Sex-Dependent Memory Impairment and Reduction of Hippocampal NMDA-R2B Expression in Adulthood.

Drinking alcohol during pregnancy is particularly detrimental for the developing brain and may cause a broad spectrum of cognitive and behavioral impairments, collectively known as fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD). While behavioral abnormalities and brain damage have been widely investigated in animal models of FASD, the sex differences in the vulnerability to perinatal ethanol exposure have received less consideration. Here we investigated the long-term behavioral and molecular effects of acute ethanol-binge like exposure during the early postnatal period (equivalent to the third trimes

Lack of recognition and complexity of foetal alcohol neuroimpairments.

AIMS: To obtain the recorded prevalence of foetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) and foetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) in Norway, and evaluate the effect of a general information program to increase the recognition of FAS/FASD for health care and social workers. METHODS: A questionnaire regarding prevalence of FAS/FASD was sent to all Norwegian paediatric and child psychiatry departments. In the region Hordaland county, an information program was carried out to educate health-care and social workers on symptoms and signs of FAS/FASD, and referral was encouraged for suspected cases. Referred ch

Relationships between Head Circumference, Brain Volume and Cognition in Children with Prenatal Alcohol Exposure.

Head circumference is used together with other measures as a proxy for central nervous system damage in the diagnosis of fetal alcohol spectrum disorders, yet the relationship between head circumference and brain volume has not been investigated in this population. The objective of this study is to characterize the relationship between head circumference, brain volume and cognitive performance in a large sample of children with prenatal alcohol exposure (n = 144) and healthy controls (n = 145), aged 5-19 years. All participants underwent magnetic resonance imaging to yield brain volumes and he…

Prenatal Alcohol Screening During Pregnancy by Midwives and Nurses.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol use during pregnancy can have a variety of harmful consequences on the fetus. Lifelong effects include growth restriction, characteristic facial anomalies, and neurobehavioral dysfunction. This range of effects is known as fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD). There is no amount, pattern, or timing of alcohol use during pregnancy proven safe for a developing embryo or fetus. Therefore, it is important to screen patients for alcohol use, inform them about alcohol's potential effects during pregnancy, encourage abstinence, and refer for intervention if necessary. However, …

Performance validity test failure predicts suppression of neuropsychological test results in developmentally disabled children.

There is increasing awareness of the need to use Performance Validity Tests (PVTs) when assessing cognitive abilities in children. Since 1996, there has been an ongoing clinical study of the use of three PVTs with a consecutive series of 1,285 developmentally disabled children. In this study, we report on the results of these PVTs in children of many diagnostic categories. Failure rates on all three tests were very low. The mean scores on the effort measures in those passing the PVTs were extremely high. Failure on each PVT was found to be associated with a significant and widespread suppressi

Patterns of cognitive-motor development in children with fetal alcohol syndrome from a community in South Africa.

BACKGROUND: Even though fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) has been reported in nonwestern nations, there is a paucity of information on neurodevelopment in the affected children from those nations. This article reports on a study of cognitive-motor development in a group of children with FAS from a community in the Western Cape Province in South Africa. METHODS: Thirty-four children with FAS and 34 controls from grade 1 (school entry level) classes participated. The two groups comprised Afrikaans-speaking children of mixed ancestry (South African Colored) and were matched for age, sex, and family
