Controlled tests of the efficacy of bot-active compounds, dichlorvos, trichlorfon, trichlorfon butonate, and carbon disulfide on the larvae of Gasterophilus intestinalis and Gasterophilus nasalis during their migratory period in the tissue of the mouth of horses and ponies were completed on experimentally induced and naturally acquired infections. Against the experimental parasitisms in pony foals, the resin-pellet formulation of dichlorvos given on the feed at the dose level of 37 mg/kg, 2 formulations of trichlorfon given by stomach tube at the dose level of 40 mg/kg, another of trichlorfon

INTRODUCTION: To present a case series of external ophthalmomyiasis caused by Oestrus ovis (L. 1758) (Diptera, Oestridae) larvae over an eight-week period in Santiago de Compostela (NW Spain), highlighting its entomology facts, epidemiological factors, clinical management, and possible complications.
METHODS: Five cases were detected at the Ophthalmology Emergency Department of the Hospital Clínico Universitario de Santiago de Compostela. All patients presented with foreign body sensation, tearing, and ocular redness. Larvae were mechanically removed and identified as O. ovis in the L1 larval…

BACKGROUND: Lucilia cuprina (Wiedemann, 1830) (Diptera: Calliphoridae) is the main causative agent of flystrike of sheep in Australia and New Zealand. Female flies lay eggs in an open wound or natural orifice, and the developing larvae eat the host's tissues, a condition called myiasis. To improve our understanding of host-seeking behavior, we quantified gene expression in male and female antennae based on their behavior.
METHODS: A spatial olfactometer was used to evaluate the olfactory response of L. cuprina mated males and gravid females to fresh or rotting beef. Antennal RNA-Seq analysis …

Parasitism is a strong selective pressure, and its study is crucial for predicting the persistence of host species. Mantled howler monkeys are infected by the larvae of the bot fly Cuterebra baeri. This parasitosis produces myiasis and may have negative impacts on host health, although systematic information on the dynamics of this host-parasite relationship is very limited. Currently, all available information on infection patterns of C. baeri comes from a single mantled howler monkey population (Barro Colorado Island, Panama). Therefore, in this study we describe temporal variation in infect…

This study was conducted to clarify the host specificity and the geographical distribution of Gasterophilus species (Diptera, Oestridae) in the Serengeti ecosystem. A total of 317 larvae were recovered from two common zebras (Equus quagga, formerly Equus burchellii) in Maswa Game Reserve, and 58 larvae were recovered from an African lion (Panthera leo) in the Serengeti National Park. The study emphasizes the rare occurrence of Gasterophilus sp. in lions, shedding light on the broader life cycle and physiological implications for hosts. Genetic analysis of cox2 genes from Gasterophilus species,

OBJECTIVE: Compare breech-strike on Merino ewes and hoggets that were mulesed, had breech and tail clips applied ('clipped') or left unmulesed and treated strategically with long-acting insecticide.
DESIGN: A cohort study on two farms in southern Victoria.
METHODS: Three treatment groups were established at lamb marking in 2008 and 2009 on each farm. The unmulesed group was treated with a long-acting insecticide in early spring. The prevalence of breech-strike and key risk factors, including presence of dag, urine stain and breech wrinkle, were compared between groups.
RESULTS: Breech-strik

OBJECTIVE: To determine the effect of applying plastic clips to the breech and tail of lambs on the perineal and tail bare areas, breech wrinkle, dag (faecal) accumulation, urine stain, body weight and survival of lambs, compared with unclipped, unmulesed lambs and mulesed lambs.
METHOD: The study was conducted on five commercial wool-growing farms in southern Australia. On each study site lambs (2-12-weeks-old) were divided into three groups: (1) unclipped, unmulesed control (tail dock only); (2) treated with clips; and (3) treated with the mules operation. Evaluations of effects, including

Myiases are infestations with dipteran larvae in both necrosed and living tissues, the food source of these insects. These illnesses occur in warm humid climates, and are most frequent in developing countries. We assessed the epidemiological aspects and the influence of climate on the occurrence of myiases and the bioagents in patients admitted to the federal Hospital do Andaraí in Rio de Janeiro from February 2007 to 2008. The influence of abiotic factors (temperature, humidity, and rainfall) on the incidence of myiases was investigated by using the Pearson's correlation test. Of the 40 patie

A morphological study of the midgut and salivary glands of second and third instars of Gasterophilus intestinalis (De Geer) (Diptera: Oestridae) was conducted by light, scanning and transmission electron microscopy. The midgut is anteriorly delimited by a proventriculus, without caeca, and is composed of posterior foregut and anterior midgut tissue from which a double-layered peritrophic matrix is produced. The midgut can be divided into anterior, median and posterior regions on the basis of the structural and physiological variations of the columnar cells which occur along its length. Two oth

We used enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and western blotting (WB) to evaluate the reactivity of first-stage larval extracts of Hypoderma lineatum with antibodies in sera from 76 red deer from an endemic area for Hypoderma actaeon. Antibodies in sera from deer infested with H. actaeon recognized hypodermin C from H. lineatum in both ELISA and WB assays. ELISA values were correlated with the epidemiology of the fly infestation in the area where the deer sera were collected. There was no clear relationship between anti-hypodermin C antibody levels and the age of the animals or the numbe

Macroparasites potentially play a significant but often ignored role in the ecology and dynamics of wild ruminant populations. In the Arctic, parasites may impact on host populations by exacerbating the effects of seasonal and limited forage availability on the condition, fecundity and survival of individuals. We studied the effects of abomasal nematode parasites and warble flies, Hypoderma tarandi, on condition and pregnancy of caribou Rangifer tarandus in the Dolphin-Union herd, Nunavut, Canada. By the end of winter, female caribou over 2 years old showed a significant decrease in body weigh

Serum samples from 25 reindeer (Rangifer tarandus tarandus) were assayed for antibody against hypodermin C (HyC) using an ELISA. Nineteen animals were calves (born in 1998, 1999 or 2001) and six were adults (3-10 years old at first blood collection). The samples were collected over periods of 4 months (calves born in 2001) or 27 months (adults and calves born in 1998 and 1999), the latter encompassing three Hypoderma tarandi infestation seasons. The calves received antibodies against HyC from their mothers, either by placental transfer or through the ingestion of colostrum. The low level at 3
