To minimize complications in skull base surgery, it is necessary to separate intracranial structures from the upper aerodigestive tract with well-vascularized tissue. The majority of defects can be reconstructed using local flaps using pericranium, galea, or temporalis muscle. However, there are conditions that affect the suitability of the previously mentioned flaps, for example, previous surgical procedures or radiotherapy. Local flaps may also be inadequate to reconstruct particularly large defects. Extensive bony demolitions produce aesthetic deformities that need accurate reconstructions.

The clinical and histologic features of benign and malignant neural tumors of the oral cavity and jaws are reviewed. Some rarer histologic variants are mentioned. Particular attention is paid to the two syndromes involving neural tumors of the oral cavity, namely, neurofibromatosis and multiple endocrine neoplasia III. Of 112 000 patients undergoing surgery between 1952 and 1973, 67 had a primary tumor of the small intestine. 22 patients had a benign tumor, 8 a carcinoid, 21 carcinoma and 15 sarcoma. Benign tumors were more frequent in the duodenum and ileum, carcinoids in the terminal ileum and carcinomas in the duodenum and jejunum.
