Grasping what is graspable: evidence from visual form agnosia.

Patient DF has profound visual form agnosia. Despite this, she has no problem adjusting her finger-thumb grip aperture to the width of objects when reaching to grasp them. In a previous study, however, she was found to have great difficulty in scaling her grip aperture when attempting to grasp a transparent disc through two holes cut into it. This problem was attributed to a putative difference between the visual processing of size and distance in the brain, whereby DF retained the capacity for processing object size but not the separation between distinct elements such as holes. In the presen

[Emotional processing in patients with a dissocial personality disorder subtype "psychopathy" according to PCL-R].

OBJECTIVE: Functional MRI was used to test the effects of the deficient emotional responsiveness of psychopathic patients on cognitive processes. METHOD: We used a Simon-paradigm, in which ten healthy volunteers and ten patients with a diagnosis of "psychopathy" (defined by Hare Psychopathy Checklist Revised) have to select their spatially defined responses on the basis of a nonspatial stimuli feature. For the emotion induction pictures from the International Affective Picture System (IAPS) were selected. At the beginning and intermediated by the Simon-paradigm blocks of positive, negative or

Theory of mind deficits in bipolar affective disorder.

BACKGROUND: Bipolar affective disorder patients often show cognitive deficits that are similar to those found in schizophrenia patients. Theory of mind (the ability to understand others' mental states) is compromised in currently ill schizophrenia patients. This study aimed to establish whether similar deficits are found in bipolar patients. METHODS: We measured theory of mind ability in 20 bipolar-manic patients, 15 bipolar-depressed patients, 13 bipolar patients in remission and 15 normal controls. The task, which controlled for memory and comprehension, had previously been used in a study

Brain activity related to integrative processes in visual object recognition: bottom-up integration and the modulatory influence of stored knowledge.

We report evidence from a PET activation study that the inferior occipital gyri (likely to include area V2) and the posterior parts of the fusiform and inferior temporal gyri are involved in the integration of visual elements into perceptual wholes (single objects). Of these areas, the fusiform and inferior temporal gyri were more activated by tasks with recognizable stimuli than by tasks with unrecognizable stimuli. We propose that the posterior parts of the fusiform and inferior temporal gyri, compared with the inferior occipital gyri, are involved in higher level integration, due to the inv

Transient interhemispheric neuronal synchrony correlates with object recognition.

Object recognition might be achieved by the recreation of a meaningful internal image from visual fragments. This recreation might be achieved by neuronal synchronization that has been proposed as a solution for the perceptual binding problem. In this study, we evaluated synchronization between the occipitotemporal regions bilaterally using electroencephalograms during several visual recognition tasks. Conscious recognition of familiar objects spanning the visual midline induced transient interhemispheric electroencephalographic coherence in the alpha band, which did not occur with meaningless

Impaired inhibition of conditioned responses produced by subchronic administration of phencyclidine to rats.

Several recent investigations have suggested that an important function of the frontostriatal system is inhibitory response control, and we previously reported that subchronic exposure to phencyclidine (PCP) produced deficits in inhibitory control in monkeys. The current studies were designed to examine whether subchronic administration of PCP to rats would subsequently affect the ability to inhibit conditioned responses when relationships between reward and stimuli of affective significance change. First, the effects of long-term exposure to PCP on acquisition of a novel, concurrent discrimin

Integration of diverse information in working memory within the frontal lobe.

Ability to integrate diverse forms of information in current thought, or working memory, is essential for human reasoning and problem solving. We used functional imaging to identify brain regions preferentially involved in maintaining integrated versus unintegrated information in working memory. For equal amounts of verbal and spatial information, activation of prefrontal cortex was greater for maintaining integrated rather than unintegrated representations. Posterior brain regions showed the opposite pattern. These results demonstrate frontal-lobe specialization in maintaining working-memory

Interhemispheric depth judgement.

Interhemispheric depth comparisons were studied by requiring subjects to align in depth two textured plates, one presented to the left hemifield and the other to the right. Callosal agenesis subjects and neurologically-normal control subjects adjusted the plates so that they appeared to be at the same distance. Subjects viewed the plates monocularly or binocularly while keeping their head still, moving it side-to-side or moving it up and down. Subjects fixated a target located between the two plates while performing the task. For all subjects, the results showed that the deviations from veridi

Cognitive function and cardiovascular responsivity in subjects with a parental history of hypertension.

College-age subjects with and without a parental history of hypertension completed a battery of tests of cognitive function on two separate occasions. Pulse rate and blood pressure were measured during performance of each task. In one session, subjects were told that their performance was being evaluated and videotaped from behind an observation mirror (Evaluation Condition). In the other session, subjects were told that their performance was not being observed (Nonevaluation Condition). Regardless of Evaluation Condition, Parental History subjects exhibited slower search of short-term memory

Limitations of interhemispheric extracallosal transfer of visual information in callosal agenesis.

A 57-year-old patient with callosal but not anterior commissure agenesis was investigated with a visual interfield comparison and a naming task. Stimuli were presented tachistoscopically either bilateral-simultaneously or unilaterally in the LVF and/or RVF. The stimuli presented bilaterally differed with respect to their degree of similarity. Whereas the patient was able to detect gross differences between stimuli presented in the left and right half-field, he was impaired at discriminating similar and identical stimuli across the half-fields. Identification by naming was correct on unilateral

A comparison between transient amnesias induced by two drugs (diazepam or lorazepam) and amnesia of organic origin.

The transient amnesias produced by drugs may have much in common with the more permanent amnesias associated with organic brain damage. This possibility was investigated using two benzodiazepines, diazepam and lorazepam, with medical student volunteers. In Experiment 1, 27 subjects received a 2ml intravenous injection of either diazepam (7.5 mg) or of lorazepam (3.0 mg) or of normal saline. In Experiment 2, a further 13 subjects were given lorazepam (2.5 mg) or saline. A double blind procedure was used. Neither drug had an appreciable effect on span-type short-term memory (except with 2-channe

Psychoticism and thought disorder in psychiatric patients.

Schizophrenic patients, whether thought-disordered or not, were found to perform worse than other patients when sorting schematic faces, but not when sorting equivalent abstract material. This information-processing deficit was found to be related to self-rated psychoticism scores as well as to factor scores on the factor of schizophrenia derived from the analysis of psychiatrists' ratings of the patients on a large number of symptoms.

Cortico-limbic responsiveness to high-calorie food images predicts weight status among women.

OBJECTIVES: Excessive weight gain and obesity are currently among the world's major threats to health. Women show significantly higher rates of obesity and eating disorders relative to men, but the factors contributing to these gender differences remain uncertain. We examined the correlations between regional brain responses to images of high-calorie versus low-calorie foods and self-reported motivational status, including ratings of general appetite, overeating propensity, state hunger and desire for specific foods. SUBJECTS: Thirty-eight healthy right-handed adults (22 male; 16 female) ages

Neural correlates of orthographic and phonological consistency effects in children.

The objective of this study was to examine the neural correlates of phonological inconsistency (relationship of spelling to sound) and orthographic inconsistency (relationship of sound to spelling) in visual word processing using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Children (9- to 15-year-old) performed a rhyming and spelling task in which two words were presented sequentially in the visual modality. Consistent with previous studies in adults, higher phonological inconsistency was associated with greater activation in several regions including left inferior frontal gyrus and medial f

Cortical representation of inward and outward radial motion in man.

We have used positron emission tomography to investigate the cortical areas of the normal human brain involved in processing inward (Expansion) and outward (Contraction) radial motion simulated with an optic flow stimulus. The optical flow display was made out of dots moving radially away from or toward the center of the display monitor. In the Control condition, the dots' motion was randomized in order to remove any sensation of radial motion. In the Expansion condition, several loci of activation were observed: visual areas V2-V3 and the superior parietal lobule (BA 7), predominantly in the

Time course of clinical change following neurofeedback.

Neurofeedback - learning to modulate brain function through real-time monitoring of current brain state - is both a powerful method to perturb and probe brain function and an exciting potential clinical tool. For neurofeedback effects to be useful clinically, they must persist. Here we examine the time course of symptom change following neurofeedback in two clinical populations, combining data from two ongoing neurofeedback studies. This analysis reveals a shared pattern of symptom change, in which symptoms continue to improve for weeks after neurofeedback. This time course has several implica

Posterior and prefrontal contributions to the development posttraumatic stress disorder symptom severity: an fMRI study of symptom provocation in acute stress disorder.

Acute stress disorder (ASD) is predictive of the development of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). In response to symptom provocation, the exposure to trauma-related pictures, ASD patients showed increased activation of the medial posterior areas of precuneus and posterior cingulate cortex as well as of superior prefrontal cortex in a previous study. The current study aimed at investigating which activated areas are predictive of the development of PTSD. Nineteen ASD patients took part in an fMRI study in which they were shown personalized trauma-related and neutral pictures within 4 weeks

Cortical connectivity maps reveal anatomically distinct areas in the parietal cortex of the rat.

A central feature of theories of spatial navigation involves the representation of spatial relationships between objects in complex environments. The parietal cortex has long been linked to the processing of spatial visual information and recent evidence from single unit recording in rodents suggests a role for this region in encoding egocentric and world-centered frames. The rat parietal cortex can be subdivided into four distinct rostral-caudal and medial-lateral regions, which includes a zone previously characterized as secondary visual cortex. At present, very little is known regarding the

Shared neural processes support semantic control and action understanding.

Executive-semantic control and action understanding appear to recruit overlapping brain regions but existing evidence from neuroimaging meta-analyses and neuropsychology lacks spatial precision; we therefore manipulated difficulty and feature type (visual vs. action) in a single fMRI study. Harder judgements recruited an executive-semantic network encompassing medial and inferior frontal regions (including LIFG) and posterior temporal cortex (including pMTG). These regions partially overlapped with brain areas involved in action but not visual judgements. In LIFG, the peak responses to action
