Lockbox enrichment facilitates manipulative and cognitive activities for mice.

BACKGROUND: Due to the lack of complexity and variety of stimuli, conventional housing conditions of laboratory mice do not allow these animals to fully express their behavioral repertoire, including manipulative and cognitive activities. Therefore, we designed mechanical puzzles, so-called lockboxes, for mice that can be provided in their home cages. We investigated the impact of the lockbox enrichment on their phenotype and affective state when compared to conventional housing (CH) and super-environmental enrichment (SEE). METHODS: Young adult female C57BL/6JCrl mice were examined before an

Contextual effects of community capacity as a predictor for adolescent alcohol, tobacco, and illicit drug use: A multi-level analysis.

Adolescent substance use is a major public health issue that can result in enduring physical, psychological, and social consequences. This study seeks to examine the relationship between community capacity for prevention and the 4-week prevalence rate of substance use, including tobacco, alcohol, other drugs, and binge-drinking, among students in Germany ranging from grades 5 to 11. This study employed a cross-sectional design and used baseline data from 28 communities participating in the CTC-EFF study. The sample consisted of 7210 students who were surveyed about their substance use behavior

COVID-19 Related Distress in Gambling Disorder.

The COVID-19 pandemic has exerted a dramatic impact on everyday life globally. In this context, it has been reported that the lockdown and social distancing may have exerted an impact even on gambling behavior, not only by increasing gambling behavior in those affected by this disorder but even contributing to the occurrence of new cases. To explore such a possibility, we designed a cross-sectional web survey addressing a general population sample that lasted 3 weeks (March 23-April 20). Participants completed a survey including a demographic information section, a question regarding the prese

Racial-Ethnic Disparities in Opioid Prescriptions at Emergency Department Visits for Conditions Commonly Associated with Prescription Drug Abuse.

Prescription drug abuse is a growing problem nationally. In an effort to curb this problem, emergency physicians might rely on subjective cues such as race-ethnicity, often unknowingly, when prescribing opioids for pain-related complaints, especially for conditions that are often associated with drug-seeking behavior. Previous studies that examined racial-ethnic disparities in opioid dispensing at emergency departments (EDs) did not differentiate between prescriptions at discharge and drug administration in the ED. We examined racial-ethnic disparities in opioid prescription at ED visits for p

Motivational Profiles of Gambling Behavior: Self-determination Theory, Gambling Motives, and Gambling Behavior.

Gambling among young adults occurs at a higher rate than in the general population and is associated with a host of negative consequences. Self-determination theory (SDT) posits that individuals develop general motivational orientations which predict a range of behavioral outcomes. An autonomy orientation portrays a choiceful perspective facilitating personal growth, whereas a controlled orientation represents a chronic proclivity toward external pressures and a general lack of choice. Further, an impersonal orientation is characterized by alack of intention and feeling despondent and ineffect

Regulatory disorders in early childhood: Correlates in child behavior, parent-child relationship, and parental mental health.

According to the guidelines published by the German Society of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Psychosomatics and Psychotherapy (2007), regulatory disorders of early childhood are characterized by a symptom triad, including (a) behavioral symptoms such as excessive crying, sleeping, or feeding problems; (b) a disturbed parent-child relationship; and (c) parental psychopathology. On the basis of a clinic-referred sample of 162 children, we examined whether children with and without regulatory symptoms differed in the quality of parent-child relationship and parental mental health, and how ofte

Family context and HIV risk among youth in psychiatric care: what pediatricians can do.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The HIV/AIDS epidemic is one of the most widespread public health problems today. Teens with mental health concerns are particularly vulnerable to infection because they engage in higher rates of risky behaviors than their peers. Families are vital influences in protecting teens from HIV exposure, but parents often feel unprepared to discuss sexual behavior with teens. This review provides an overview of the role of teens' mental illness in HIV risk and suggests guidelines for pediatricians to facilitate parents' ability to keep teens safe from risky behaviors. Risk Factor Profile in Inpatients with School Refusal: a Dimensional Model.

BACKGROUND: School attendance problems have an impact on the social, academic, and professional development of young people. School refusal and truancy are described as school attendance problems. Clarifying the developmental trajectory of school refusal would allow a better understanding of the phenomenon including earlier detection and improved management. Following a dimensional model, we can consider school refusal as an internalizing problem and truancy as an externalizing problem implying the existence of different risk factor profiles. SUBJECT AND METHOD: We conducted a retrospective s

The role of chronic peer difficulties in the development of children's psychological adjustment problems.

A longitudinal investigation was conducted to explicate how the confluence of early behavioral dispositions, relational histories, and cognitive representations of the self and others contributes to internalizing problems, externalizing problems, and loneliness. One-hundred and ninety three girls, and 206 boys were assessed annually from age 5 (kindergarten) to age 10 (Grade 4). Early aggressive behavior was related to Grade 4 maladjustment directly and indirectly through subsequent relational stressors. Significant associations emerged between chronic friendlessness and rejection and later ad

Emotion regulation in emerging adult gamblers and its mediating role with depressive symptomology.

BACKGROUND: It is presently estimated that as much as 10% of emerging adults are at risk for a gambling disorder. The consequences stemming from problematic gambling engagement include increased substance use, mental health disorders, suicidality, financial strain and legal issues. The present study explores whether deficits in emotion regulation explain the association between problem gambling severity and depression. METHODS: A sample of 820 emerging adult gamblers (Mage = 21.14 years-old, SD = 2.90, 50.9% female) completed an online survey including an assessment of problematic engagement

The modular approach to therapy for youths with anxiety, depression, trauma, and conduct problems (MATCH): results from the Norwegian randomized-controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: A randomized controlled trial was conducted to examine the effectiveness of the Modular Approach to Therapy for Youths with Anxiety, Depression, Trauma, and Conduct Problems (MATCH) for Norwegian youths referred to seven Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Outpatient Clinics. MATCH addresses comorbid problems that are common in children and youth, and its transdiagnostic design may therefore be more effective compared to standard treatments that often address single problems. MATCH has, however, never been evaluated in a Nordic context, and the present study aimed to fill this gap. M

A cross-sectional analysis of women's mental health problems: examining the association with different types of violence among a sample of Brazilian mothers.

BACKGROUND: Mental health problems are the major cause of disability in poor countries, and women are the individuals most affected. The World Health Organization points out that violence against women is the leading cause of mental health problems. This study seeks to identify explanatory factors for women's mental health problems, highlighting situations of violence suffered by them during childhood, when living with a partner and in the community. METHOD: A cross-sectional analysis was conducted with 389 mothers with schoolchildren in a city in the state of Rio de Janeiro (Brazil). Profile

Suicidal Risk Behaviors in Adolescents With Rare Neurodevelopmental Disorders: The Role of Sex, Autistic Traits, and Mental Health Difficulties.

OBJECTIVE: Autistic traits are associated with mental health difficulties and risk of suicidal risk behaviors among adolescents. Little is known about how autistic traits affect the mental health of adolescents with rare neurodevelopmental disorders (RNDs). The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between autistic traits, mental health difficulties, and suicidal risk behaviors in adolescents with RNDs. METHODS: Parents (N = 93) completed the Child Behavior Checklist, Social Communication Questionnaire, and Social Responsiveness Scale about their adolescent (Mage = 13.1, SD =

A Descriptive Mixed-Methods Analysis of Sexual Behavior and Knowledge in Very Young Children Assessed for Sexual Abuse: The ASAC Study.

Child sexual abuse (CSA) is a worldwide problem with serious consequences. We hypothesized that worrisome sexual behavior and knowledge would frequently be reported in children assessed after CSA. We therefore investigated (A) what types of sexual behaviors and knowledge were reported by parents of young children assessed for CSA; (B) in what cases such behaviors and knowledge were worrisome; and (C) how such children responded verbally and non-verbally during child interviews. We conducted a mixed-methods study, including qualitative inductive content analysis and quantitative analysis. It in

Exposure to polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and child behavior: Current findings and future directions.

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are recognized neurotoxicants, but the extent to which PBDEs influence various domains of behavior in children is not fully understood. As such, we reviewed epidemiologic studies published to date to provide an overview of the current state of knowledge on PBDEs' potential role in behavioral development. We identified 19 epidemiologic studies reporting on associations of prenatal and childhood concentrations of PBDEs with behaviors assessed in children from 1 to 12years, including executive function, attention, externalizing and internalizing behaviors, a

Testing the Functional Profiles of School Refusal Behavior and Clarifying Their Relationship With School Anxiety.

Students with school attendance problems are a diverse and heterogeneous group whose patterns of symptomatology can change over time. This study aims to identify different school refusal behavior profiles and to determine whether these profiles differ from each other based on four situational factors and three response systems of school anxiety across gender. The participants were 1,685 Spanish students (49% female) aged 15-18 years (M = 16.28; SD =0.97). The School Refusal Assessment Scale-Revised (SRAS-R) and the School Anxiety Inventory (SAI) were administered. Latent profile analysis revea

Correlates of suicide ideation and attempts in children and adolescents with eating disorders.

This is the first study determining correlates of suicide behavior in children with eating disorders using multiple sleep, psychological, and demographic variables. Mothers rated suicide ideation and attempts in 90 children ages 7-18 with bulimia nervosa or anorexia nervosa. Suicide ideation was more prevalent in children with bulimia nervosa (43%) than children with anorexia nervosa (20%). All children with bulimia nervosa who experienced ideation attempted suicide, whereas only 3% of children with anorexia nervosa attempted suicide. Correlates of ideation were externalizing behavior problems

Behavioral adjustment of siblings of children with autism engaged in applied behavior analysis early intervention programs: the moderating role of social support.

There have been few studies of the impact of intensive home-based early applied behavior analysis (ABA) intervention for children with autism on family functioning. In the present study, behavioral adjustment was explored in 78 siblings of children with autism on ABA programs. First, mothers' ratings of sibling adjustment were compared to a normative sample. There were no reported increases in behavioral adjustment problems in the present sample. Second, regression analyses revealed that social support functioned as a moderator of the impact of autism severity on sibling adjustment rather than

[Impotence].

The term impotence can be defined as "disturbances in sexual behavior and sexual feeling in males as evidenced by impaired or atypical genitophysiological reactions or the complete absence of such reactions." There are two main forms: erectile impotence and premature ejaculation. Differential diagnosis between "organic" and "psychogenic" impotence is very often impossible due to the fact that the causal factors of both areas can play a role in individual cases. Psychotherapy is not always necessary. Sexual counseling can be appropriate when sexual problems are the result of inadequate sex educ
