Neuropathologic findings of bromethalin toxicosis in the cat.

Ten random source male domestic shorthair cats, 2 to 6 years old and 3.0-4.4 kg body weight, were each given a single oral dose (1.5 mg/kg) of bromethalin (cat Nos. 1-5) or bait vehicle carrier (cat Nos. 6-10). Bromethalin-dosed cats developed a toxic syndrome characterized by ataxia, focal motor seizures, vocalization, decerebrate posture, decreased conscious proprioception, recumbency, depression, and semicoma. Bromethalin-dosed cats were euthanatized if seizure activity or hindlimb paralysis developed. Survival times were 48 hours (cat No. 1), 89 hours (cat No. 2), 90 hours (cat No. 3), and…

Haptic Acuity During Shared Grasp Experiences in Virtual Reality.

Wearable haptic gloves have the potential to greatly enhance active touch experiences in virtual reality (VR). However, it remains unclear how well people can interpret glove-enabled virtual touch experiences when experienced passively (for example, when they passively view a virtual hand perform autonomous actions while also feeling what the virtual hand feels via a haptic glove). Such a "haptic replay" scenario could enable people to share, revisit, or demonstrate touch-critical experiences, including medical palpation or fine manipulation of tools. This study explores a virtual user's abili

An intronic variant in Ferredoxin Reductase (FDXR) creates a cryptic exon in Quarter Horses with Equine Juvenile Spinocerebellar Ataxia.

Equine Juvenile Spinocerebellar Ataxia (EJSCA) is a novel autosomal recessive neurologic disease in Quarter Horses. Affected foals display a progressive proprioceptive ataxia by 1-5 weeks of age, leading to recumbency and necessitating euthanasia. Whole genome sequencing was performed on 7 EJSCA cases and unaffected horses that included 4 obligate carriers, 4 unaffected half or full-siblings, and 28 unrelated, unaffected control Quarter Horses. An 82 kb region of association was identified (EquCab3.0, chr11: 6963986-7045999), containing 9 candidate SNPs across four genes (FADS6, FDXR, GRIN2C a

Whole Body Vibration or Virtual Reality on Muscle Strength and Activity of Daily Living in Children With Burn: A Comparative Trial.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Mobility is a significant problem for burn children, especially their quality of life, since burn injury affects their capacity to participate in daily activities. The aim was to compare between the effect of two proprioceptive stimulations on quadriceps strength and daily activity in children with burns. METHODS: Forty children, aged six to 12, with unilateral thermal burns divided into two equal groups (I and II) randomly. Group I received a whole-body vibration (WBV) plus conventional physical treatment. Group II received a Wii-fit therapy program in addition to t

Activity of spinal RORβ neurons is related to functional improvements following combination treatment after complete SCI.

Various strategies targeting spinal locomotor circuitry have been associated with functional improvements after spinal cord injury (SCI). However, the neuronal populations mediating beneficial effects remain largely unknown. Using a combination therapy in a mouse model of complete SCI, we show that virally delivered brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) (AAV-BDNF) activates hindlimb stepping and causes hyperreflexia, whereas submotor threshold epidural stimulation (ES) reduces BDNF-induced hyperreflexia. Given their role in gating proprioceptive afferents and as a potential convergence poin

Reactivity of the Autonomic Nervous System During Visual-Physical Incongruent Walking Conditions-A Virtual Reality Study.

The force of gravity critically impacts locomotion regulation while walking on inclined surfaces. To construct an updated assessment about the gravitational consequences and change gait patterns accordingly, the central nervous system (CNS) integrates multiple sensorial cues, including vestibular and proprioceptive (i.e., body-based cues) and visual. Not much is known about the contribution of the autonomic nervous system (ANS) to locomotion regulation, especially when multiple types of sensorial cues are involved. Here we examine the responsiveness of the ANS, as reflected by cardiac reactivi

Neuromotor changes in postural control following bed rest.

Chronic bed rest (BR) serves as a model for studying the effects of prolonged immobility on physiological and neuromotor functions, particularly postural control. Prolonged BR leads to significant deconditioning of postural balance control, characterized by increased sway path lengths, sway velocity and fall risk, independent of muscle strength. These changes are linked to neural adaptations at spinal and supraspinal levels, including structural and functional brain changes, such as alterations in grey and white matter, increased cerebellar activation, reduced spinal excitability and increased

Flexible intentions: An Active Inference theory.

We present a normative computational theory of how the brain may support visually-guided goal-directed actions in dynamically changing environments. It extends the Active Inference theory of cortical processing according to which the brain maintains beliefs over the environmental state, and motor control signals try to fulfill the corresponding sensory predictions. We propose that the neural circuitry in the Posterior Parietal Cortex (PPC) compute flexible intentions-or motor plans from a belief over targets-to dynamically generate goal-directed actions, and we develop a computational formaliz

Survival motor neuron protein deficiency alters microglia reactivity.

Survival motor neuron (SMN) protein deficiency results in loss of alpha motor neurons and subsequent muscle atrophy in patients with spinal muscular atrophy (SMA). Reactive microglia have been reported in SMA mice and depleting microglia rescues the number of proprioceptive synapses, suggesting a role in SMA pathology. Here, we explore the contribution of lymphocytes on microglia reactivity in SMA mice and investigate how SMN deficiency alters the reactive profile of human induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC)-derived microglia. We show that microglia adopt a reactive morphology in spinal cords

The intraflagellar transport protein IFT52 associated with short-rib thoracic dysplasia is essential for ciliary function in osteogenic differentiation in vitro and for sensory perception in Drosophila.

Primary cilia are non-motile sensory cell-organelle that are essential for organismal development, differentiation, and postnatal homeostasis. Their biogenesis and function are mediated by the intraflagellar transport (IFT) system. Pathogenic variants in IFT52, a central component of the IFT-B complex is associated with short-rib thoracic dysplasia with or without polydactyly 16 (SRTD16), with major skeletal manifestations, in addition to other features. Here we sought to examine the role of IFT52 in osteoblast differentiation. Using lentiviral shRNA interference Ift52 was depleted in C3H10T1/

Chiropractic care of Parkinson's disease and deformity.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a progressive neurological disease characterized by muscle stiffness, tremor, slowness of movement, and difficulties with posture and walking. Muscle and joint pain are frequent non-motor symptoms of PD. Pain associated with PD is mainly caused by a combination of truncal dystonia, stooped posture, and muscle rigidity. However, PD deformities were rarely discussed in the literature. A 68-year-old Asian female with PD treated with Levodopa for six years complained of progressive neck pain, contractures, and subluxation of both hands in the last two years. A positron

Movement drift in optic ataxia reveals deficits in hand state estimation in oculocentric coordinates.

When vision is removed, limb position has been shown to progressively drift during repetitive arm movements. The posterior parietal cortex (PPC) is known to be involved in the processing of multisensory information, the formation of internal hand estimate, and online motor control. Here, we compared hand position drift between healthy controls and 2 patients with PPC damage to gain insight into the mechanisms underlying movement drift and investigate the possible role of the PPC in this process. To do so, we asked participants to perform back-and-forth movements between 2 targets, in the dark

Moving Toward Understanding Autism: Visual-Motor Integration, Imitation, and Social Skill Development.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder with a behavioral phenotype characterized by impaired development of social-communicative skills and excessive repetitive and stereotyped behaviors. Despite high phenotypic heterogeneity in ASD, a meaningful subpopulation of children with ASD (∼90%) show significant general motor impairment. More focused studies on the nature of motor impairment in ASD reveal that children with ASD are particularly impaired on tasks such as ball catching and motor imitation that require efficient visual-motor integration (VMI). Motor computational

Endovascular repair and open repair surgery of thoraco-abdominal aortic aneurysms cause drastically different types of spinal cord injury.

Both endovascular repair (EVR) and open repair (OR) surgery of thoraco-abdominal aortic aneurysms cause spinal cord (SC) injury that can lead to paraparesis or paraplegia. It has been assumed that mechanisms responsible for SC damage after EVR are similar to those after OR. This pilot study compared the pathophysiology of SC injury after EVR versus OR using a newly developed EVR dog model. An increasing number of stents similar to those used in patients were inserted in the aorta of three dogs to ensure thoracic or thoracic plus lumbar coverage. The aorta of OR dogs was cross-clamped for 45 mi

Cervical intervertebral disc degeneration and dizziness.

Clinical studies have found that patients withcervical degenerative disease are usually accompanied by dizziness. Anterior cervical surgery can eliminate not only chronic neck pain, cervical radiculopathy or myelopathy, but also dizziness. Immunohistochemical studies show that a large number of mechanoreceptors, especially Ruffini corpuscles, are present in degenerated cervical discs. The available evidence suggests a key role of Ruffini corpuscles in the pathogenesis of dizziness caused by cervical degenerative disease (i.e. cervical discogenic dizziness). Disc degeneration is characterized b

Non-invasive, Brain-controlled Functional Electrical Stimulation for Locomotion Rehabilitation in Individuals with Paraplegia.

Spinal cord injury (SCI) impairs the flow of sensory and motor signals between the brain and the areas of the body located below the lesion level. Here, we describe a neurorehabilitation setup combining several approaches that were shown to have a positive effect in patients with SCI: gait training by means of non-invasive, surface functional electrical stimulation (sFES) of the lower-limbs, proprioceptive and tactile feedback, balance control through overground walking and cue-based decoding of cortical motor commands using a brain-machine interface (BMI). The central component of this new ap

Correlation of MRI with the Neuropathologic Changes in Two Cats with Bromethalin Intoxication.

Two cats were presented with multifocal neurological signs. One cat's signs progressed over 2 wk; the other cat progressed over 5 days. Examinations were consistent with a process involving the prosencephalon, vestibular system, and general proprioceptive/upper motor neuron systems. MRI of the brain and cervical spinal cord reveal widespread T2 hyperintensity of the white matter. Affected areas included the cerebrum, cerebral peduncles, corticospinal tracts of the pons and medulla, and the cerebellum. T2 hyperintensity was present in all funiculi of the spinal cord. Very early Charcot spinal arthropathy associated with forward bending after spinal cord injury: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Charcot spinal arthropathy (CSA) is an uncommon clinical entity following spinal cord injury (SCI). It is characterized by progressive cartilaginous and bony destruction and is felt to be due to loss of proprioceptive and nociceptive feedback from the spine. CSA is typically diagnosed many years following SCI and has the potential to lead to progressive neurologic decline if left untreated. CASE PRESENTATION: We describe the case of a 49-year-old male who fell approximately thirty feet from a ladder and sustained a fracture/dislocation at T3-4 and T8-9 resulting in a T4 ASIA A S

Clinical Study on 3 Patients with Infarction of the Vermis/Tonsil in the Cerebellum.

BACKGROUND: Infarction of the vermis and the tonsil in the cerebellum presents as truncal and gait ataxia. Acute rotatory vertigo is often present in infarction of the nodulus in the caudal vermis, which is closely associated with the vestibular pathway, but is minor in infarction of the rostral vermis. The rostral vermis receives input from the dorsal spinocerebellar tract (DSCT) which conveys unconsciousness proprioceptive signals from the ipsilateral lower trunk and leg. The present study investigated the characteristics of infarction of the vermis and the tonsil. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Neu
