Treatment of open apex teeth using two types of white mineral trioxide aggregate after initial dressing with calcium hydroxide in children.

BACKGROUND: The clinical and radiographic success of two types of white mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) as apical barriers in non-vital immature permanent incisors in children was investigated. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Following an initial dressing with calcium hydroxide, MTA apical barriers were placed in 22 non-vital traumatized, permanent incisors with open apices in 21 children (mean age 10years). Teeth were alternately assigned to either white MTA ProRoot(®) or white MTA Angelus groups and treated by two operators. Clinical and radiographic reviews took place at baseline, 3 months and eve

Trauma-specific and time-dependent changes of the RANK/RANKL/OPG signaling axis in the periapical bone tissue after experimental traumatic dental injuries in rats.

The RANK (receptor activator of NF-κB)/RANKL (RANK ligand)/OPG (osteoprotegerin) system regulates osteoclast differentiation, activity, and survival, as well as inflammatory/immune responses, suggesting its potential involvement in the healing of traumatic dental injuries (TDIs). The aim was to characterize the molecular expression dynamics of the RANK/RANKLOPG axis in periapical bone tissue following TDIs in a rat model. TDIs were reproduced on the maxillary left first molar of rats (n = 18): tooth avulsion (TA); lateral luxation (LL); complicated crown fracture (CCF). Target protein levels i

Guiding Esthetic Crown Lengthening: A CBCT-Based Modified Classification of Altered Passive Eruption.

Background: Altered passive eruption (APE) is one of the etiological factors associated with excessive gingival display and is commonly treated with esthetic crown lengthening (ECL). However, existing classification systems provide limited guidance for selecting appropriate treatment approaches. Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate (1) the expected outcome of ECL in eliminating unattractive excessive gingival display (4 mm) based on digital smile assessment and (2) the distribution of teeth and patients according to the modified APE classification. Methods: Forty-two Thai patients

Postnatal Development of the Gray Short-Tailed Opossum (Monodelphis domestica): Implications for Metatherian Decline at the K-Pg.

Marsupials give birth to extremely altricial offspring which must be reared externally for an extended period, often in a pouch. Despite often being considered a defining feature of marsupials, around a third of living species lack a pouch. Here, we describe the postnatal development of the gray short-tailed opossum, Monodelphis domestica, a small pouchless South American didelphid and consider its implications for life history evolution within Metatheria. We find that at birth, ossification and chondrogenesis in neonatal M. domestica is more extensive than in basal pouched Australidelphian ma

Adverse effects of splinting of luxated primary teeth: A systematic review.

Traumatic dental injuries of primary teeth are considered as dental emergencies and public health problems because of the higher global prevalence. Dental literature in regard to optimal treatment options for periodontal injuries of primary teeth (luxation injuries) is quite limited and perplexing in terms of treatment outcomes/prognosis due to several relevant factors. To date, there has been no systematic review published in context of exploring and analyzing the unfavorable outcomes/adverse effects of splinting the luxated primary teeth and its effect on permanent successors teeth. Hence, t

Conservative Management of External Replacement Resorption in a Posterior Tooth: A Case Report.

External replacement resorption (ERR) is an uncommon yet aggressive form of root resorption in which bone replaces the root following damage to the periodontal ligament. Early recognition is critical, as progression is typically silent and may ultimately result in tooth loss. This report describes a 25-year-old male patient who presented with a "sunken" lower right first molar teeth three years after biting a hard object. Clinical examination revealed infra-occlusion, a high-pitched metallic percussion tone, and delayed pulp responses. Periapical radiography and cone beam computed tomography d

Development of patient-specific finite element model for study of composite dental implants.

Traumatic dental injuries can occur due to various reasons such as accidents, sports injuries, fights, falls, and others. These injuries can affect the teeth, gums, and surrounding tissues, and can range from minor chips and cracks to severe fractures, dislocations, and avulsions (when the tooth is completely knocked out of the socket). The most common way to address this is by replacing affected teeth with dental implants. The purpose of this research is to evaluate the use of composite materials in dental implants and compare them with the traditionally used materials using a patient specifi

Double Teeth and Coexistent Anomalies: Examples From Continental Africa.

OBJECTIVES: Whether gemination or fusion, double teeth are rare worldwide, including Africa based on few published data. New cases from the continent are tallied, and anomalies potentially associated with double teeth are identified. These findings should interest a range of dental researchers. METHODS: The presence of double teeth was recorded in 97 modern and premodern North and sub-Saharan African samples (5631 inds.). They and coexistent anomalies are described relative to published examples. Prevalence was estimated as possible, using a Poisson model for 95% confidence intervals (CI). R

The influence of orotracheal intubation on the oral tissue development in preterm infants.

PURPOSE: Preterm children may not be prepared for extra-uterine life and thus need neonatal intensive care, such as artificial ventilation through orotracheal intubation. Oral tissue development changes as a result of the use of an orotracheal tube and its mechanical influence in preterm neonates has not been intensively studied. The purpose of the present study was to determine the association of orotracheal intubation with incidence of oral alterations in preterm infants. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective cohort of 117 subjects who were born during the period 2002-2003 in Brazil were e

Elimination of permanent injuries to the inferior alveolar nerve following surgical intervention of the "high risk" third molar.

We aimed to find out whether improved preoperative assessment and surgical planning with cone beam computed tomography (CT) could reduce damage to the inferior alveolar nerve when high risk impacted mandibular third molars are extracted. We recorded the presence or absence of postoperative neuropathy after extraction of 200 lower third molars in 185 patients (where cone beam CT had shown contact between the nerve and root) after treatment in the oral surgery department of King's College Hospital. All patients had had cone beam CT of the teeth after panoramic radiography had indicated increased
