Is there a need for liver enzyme monitoring in people using gender-affirming hormone therapy?

CONTEXT: Individuals with gender dysphoria can receive gender-affirming hormone therapy. Different guidelines mention a severe risk of liver injury within the first months after the start of treatment with anabolic androgenic steroids, anti-androgens, and oral contraceptives, which is potentially fatal. OBJECTIVE: The incidence of liver injury in a transgender population using gender-affirming hormone therapy. DESIGN: Multicentre prospective study with 1933 transgender individuals, who started with hormone therapy between 2010 and 2020. METHODS: The following parameters were analysed before

Molecular screening in a longitudinal cohort of young men who have sex with men and young transgender women: associations with focus on the emerging sexually transmitted pathogen Mycoplasma genitalium.

OBJECTIVES: This investigation sought to characterise risk factors associated with acquisition of traditional and emerging agents of sexually transmitted infection (STI) in a cohort of young men who have sex with men and transgender women. METHODS: 917 participants provided urine and rectal swab submissions assessed by transcription-mediated amplification (TMA)-based assays for Chlamydia trachomatis and Neisseria gonorrhoeae and by off-label TMA-based Trichomonas vaginalis and Mycoplasma genitalium testing. A subset provided specimens at 6-month and 12-month follow-up visits. RESULTS: Preval

HIV pretreatment drug resistance among cisgender MSM and transgender women from Lima, Peru.

INTRODUCTION: Transmitted, or any pretreatment drug resistance (TDR, PDR) can compromise efficacy of first-line antiretroviral therapy (ART). In Peru, genotypic resistance testing is not routinely performed before ART initiation, and estimated PDR prevalence prior to 2012 ranged from 1.0% to 4.7%. We aimed to update estimates of PDR prevalence in men who have sex with men (cis-MSM) and transgender women (TW). METHODS: We obtained HIV sequences from three studies of ART-naïve cisgender-MSM and TW (n = 470) in Lima, Peru from 2013 to 2017, almost two-thirds of whom had acute or recent infection

Making the Link: A Pilot Health Navigation Intervention to Improve Timely Linkage to Care for Men Who have Sex with Men and Transgender Women Recently Diagnosed with HIV in Guatemala City.

We piloted a health navigation strategy to promote timely linkage to care among men who have sex with men (MSM) and transgender women (TW) recently diagnosed with HIV in Guatemala City. We used a mixed-methods approach, integrating quantitative data collected during clinic visits and qualitative data from in-depth interviews, to characterize acceptability of navigation and time to linkage, defined as having the first clinical care visit. Out of 54 participants who enrolled in the pilot (n = 52 MSM; n = 2 TW), 50 (92.6%) accepted navigation and all were linked to care. Median time to linkage wa

Psychological processes underlying the impact of gender-related discrimination on psychological distress in transgender and gender nonconforming people.

In this study we combined understanding from the gender minority stress and resilience (GMSR) model (Testa, Habarth, Peta, Balsam, & Bockting, 2015) and acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT; Hayes, Strosahl, & Wilson, 1999, 2012) to test a theoretically integrated and expansive account of the development of psychological distress in transgender and gender nonconforming (TGNC) people. Specifically, we constructed a parallel multiple mediation model in which we examined the role of psychological processes deriving from the GMSR model (i.e., internalized transphobia and identity nondisclosure)

Sex work, discrimination, drug use and violence: a pattern for HIV risk among transgender sex workers compared to MSM sex workers and other MSM in Guatemala.

The risk of HIV infection is higher among transgender women and cisgender men who have sex with men (MSM) compared to the general population due in part to social and contextual factors. This study aimed to determine the prevalence and association of alcohol and drug abuse, discrimination and violence among transgender sex workers compared to cisgender male sex workers and cisgender men who had not received money for sex in Guatemala City. In 2010, transgender women and cisgender men who had had sex with men or transgender women were recruited into a cross-sectional behavioural survey. Among t

Social Support Networks Among Young Men and Transgender Women of Color Receiving HIV Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis.

PURPOSE: The aim of the study was to characterize perceived social support for young men and transgender women who have sex with men (YM/TWSM) taking HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP). METHODS: Mixed-methods study of HIV-negative YM/TWSM of color prescribed oral PrEP. Participants completed egocentric network inventories characterizing their social support networks and identifying PrEP adherence support figures. A subset (n = 31) completed semistructured interviews exploring adherence support and qualities of PrEP support figures. We calculated proportions of role types (e.g., family), indi

Defining and surveying key populations at risk of HIV infection: Towards a unified approach to eligibility criteria for respondent-driven sampling HIV biobehavioral surveys.

Substantial resources are invested in human immunodeficiency virus biobehavioral surveys using respondent-driven sampling for measuring progress towards the UNAIDS 90-90-90 goals and to obtain other essential data on key populations. Survey data are used to meet country needs as well those of development partners, whose data needs may sometimes diverge. Surveys using differing eligibility criteria impede comparisons across surveys. With scant literature and guidelines on how to approach eligibility criteria, diverse criteria are used within and across countries. We conducted a review of peer-r

Characterizing the HIV Care Continuum and Identifying Barriers and Facilitators to HIV Diagnosis and Viral Suppression Among Black Transgender Women in the United States.

BACKGROUND: Although black transgender women (BTW) experience high prevalence of HIV in the United States, no characterization of the HIV care continuum exists for this population. This study addresses this gap by (1) characterizing the HIV care continuum, and (2) exploring correlates of HIV diagnosis and viral suppression among a community-based sample of BTW. METHODS: Data came from Promoting Our Worth, Equality, and Resilience (POWER). From 2014 to 2017, POWER recruited BTW who attended Black Pride events in 6 U.S. cities. Participants completed a behavioral health survey and were offered

Perceptual analysis of the male-to-female transgender voice after glottoplasty-the telephone test.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: The aim of this investigation was to quantify gender perception in telephone communication as a situation of everyday life. STUDY DESIGN: Matched control study. METHODS: Speech samples were recorded of 18 male to female (MtF) after Wendler's glottoplasty, 18 male, and 18 female persons. After adaption of the frequency to the limited frequency transmission on the telephone (300-3,400 Hz), the speech samples were judged by 50 male and 50 female listeners. Parameters were the decision "male" or "female" and the decision time. The formant frequencies F1 to F3 for the vowel

Impact of alcohol use on sexual behavior among men who have sex with men and transgender women in Lima, Peru.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol use disorders (AUDs) may enhance the likelihood of risky sexual behaviors and the acquisition of sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Associations between AUDs with condomless anal intercourse (CAI) and STI/HIV prevalence were assessed among men who have sex with men (MSM) and transgender women (TW) in Lima, Peru. METHODS: MSM and TW were eligible to participate based on a set of inclusion criteria which characterized them as high-risk. Participants completed a bio-behavioral survey. An AUDIT score ≥8 determined AUD presence. Recent STI diagnosis included rectal gonorrh

Population-based HIV prevalence and associated factors in male-to-female transsexuals from Southern Brazil.

This study assessed HIV prevalence and associated factors in 284 male-to-female transsexuals from southern Brazil. Seroprevalence was 25 %. Seroprevalence was higher and associated with older age, residence in the metropolitan area, history of diagnosis of other STDs, and reported history of sex work. The year of diagnosis showed no significant relationship with the prevalence of HIV nor the fact of being in a stable relationship, a history of drug use, years of education, and race/ethnicity. The odds of HIV infection compared with the general Brazilian population was 55.55 (95 % CI 38.39-80.3

Beyond voice: perceptions of gender in male-to-female transsexuals.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review covers recent research findings that demonstrate the effectiveness of speech pathology intervention in enabling male-to-female transsexual individuals to portray their gender identity through speech. Research reports that extend our understanding of communication characteristics that contribute to perceptions of sex in male-to-female transsexuals are identified. Current issues related to the measurement of therapy effectiveness are also presented. RECENT FINDINGS: Earlier studies confirmed that an increase in voice pitch is achievable for many transsexuals. Development of the W-PREV Model: Integrating HIV/STBBI Prevention and Women's Sexual and Reproductive Healthcare Using an Intersectional Women-Centered Approach.

IntroductionWomen, both cisgender and transgender, experience persistent inequities in sexual and reproductive health (SRH) due to sexism, transphobia, racism, and systemic discrimination. In Canada and globally, these intersecting inequities are exacerbated by limited, biomedical, and colonial models of care that overlook women's needs, leaving them underserved in HIV and sexually transmitted and blood-borne infection (STBBI) prevention. Our study describes the development of the Women-Centred Prevention (W-PREV) Model, designed to integrate HIV/STBBI prevention and SRH through an intersectio

Altered amygdalar emotion space in borderline personality disorder normalizes following dialectical behaviour therapy.

BACKGROUND: Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a mental health condition characterized by an inability to regulate emotions or accurately process the emotional states of others. Previous neuroimaging studies using classical univariate analyses have tied such emotion dysregulation to aberrant activity levels in the amygdala of patients with BPD. However, multivariate analyses have not yet been used to investigate how representational spaces of emotion information may be systematically altered in patients with BPD. METHODS: Patients with BPD performed an emotional face matching task while
