Evidence of a species complex within the food-borne trematode Opisthorchis viverrini and possible co-evolution with their first intermediate hosts.

The food-borne trematodes, Opisthorchis viverrini, O. felineus and Clonorchis sinensis, have long been recognized as the cause of major human health problems, with an estimated 40 million infected persons. Of the three species of liver fluke, only O. viverrini is classified as a type 1 carcinogen because of its role as an initiator of chronic inflammation and the subsequent development of cholangiocarcinoma. At present, there are no techniques for the early diagnosis of cholangiocarcinoma and it is fatal for most patients. There is considerable variation in parasite prevalence and disease pres

An Updated Checklist and Narrative Review of Helminth Parasites of Terrestrial and Semiaquatic Carnivorous Mammals in Uzbekistan.

BACKGROUND: Helminth parasites are critical components of biodiversity and influence the health of both wild and domestic carnivorous mammals. Despite their ecological and public health importance, comprehensive data on helminth diversity in Uzbekistan remain fragmented. This study delivers a thorough and updated synthesis of helminth parasites infecting 15 species of terrestrial and semi-aquatic carnivorous mammals in Uzbekistan. METHODS: This study was designed as an updated checklist and narrative review rather than a formal systematic review or meta-analysis. A total of 120 documents publ

Induction of hepatic fibrosis in mice with schistosomiasis by extracellular microRNA-30 derived from Schistosoma japonicum eggs.

BACKGROUND: Schistosomiasis is a zoonotic parasitic disorder induced by the infestation of schistosomes, a genus of trematodes. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) in egg-derived exosomes are crucial for modulating the host's immune responses and orchestrating the pathophysiological mechanisms. Although the exosomes secreted by S. japonicum contain abundant miRNAs, the specific roles of these miRNAs in the pathogenesis of schistosomiasis-induced hepatic fibrosis are yet to be comprehensively elucidated. The egg exosomes of S. japonicum secrete miRNA-30, a novel miRNA. METHODS: In vitro, the effect of miRNA-30

Liver fluke and schistosome cross-infection risk between livestock and wild mammals in Western Uganda, a One Health approach.

Trematodiases strongly reduce the welfare of humans and animals causing a great decline in health and productivity. Insufficient data on the extent of trematode infection in definitive hosts and associated risk factors remain a great threat to its control. A cross-sectional study was conducted to establish the; prevalence of liver flukes and schistosomes in livestock and wild mammals and the socio-ecological risk factors associated with their spread. Fresh dung samples were collected opportunistically (n = 865) and examined using formal ether sedimentation and microscopy for parasite eggs. Twe

Parasites and health status of free-ranging capybaras (Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris) in the Atlantic Forest and Caatinga biomes of Brazil.

Due to the degradation and loss of its natural habitat, the presence of capybaras in urban environments and crop areas has been frequently reported in various regions of Brazil. The objective of this study was to identify the parasitic fauna of free-living capybaras in two impacted biomes of the northeastern region (Atlantic Forest and Caatinga), as well as to evaluate the impact of parasitism on the health of these rodents. For this, ticks, fecal and blood samples (for hematology and serum biochemistry evaluation) were collected from 23 free-ranging capybaras from four areas of Atlantic Fores

Somatic antigens of tropical liver flukes ameliorate collagen-induced arthritis in wistar rats.

Parasitic helminths polarize immune response of their vertebrate hosts towards anti-inflammatory Th2 type and therefore it is hypothesized that they may suppress the inflammatory conditions in autoimmune disorders. The present study was undertaken to investigate in vivo immunomodulatory and therapeutic potential of somatic antigens (Ag) of liver infecting digenetic trematodes [Fasciola gigantica (Fg) and Gigantocotyle explanatum (Ge)] in collagen-induced arthritic (CIA) Wistar rats. The CIA rats were administered subcutaneously with different doses (50 μg, 100 μg and 150 μg) of somatic antigen

Nitric oxide debilitates the neuropathogenic schistosome Trichobilharzia regenti in mice, partly by inhibiting its vital peptidases.

BACKGROUND: Avian schistosomes, the causative agents of human cercarial dermatitis (or swimmer's itch), die in mammals but the mechanisms responsible for parasite elimination are unknown. Here we examined the role of reactive nitrogen species, nitric oxide (NO) and peroxynitrite, in the immune response of mice experimentally infected with Trichobilharzia regenti, a model species of avian schistosomes remarkable for its neuropathogenicity. METHODS: Inducible NO synthase (iNOS) was localized by immunohistochemistry in the skin and the spinal cord of mice infected by T. regenti. The impact of iN

Molecular and comparative morphological analysis of central European parasitic flatworms of the superfamily Brachylaimoidea Allison, 1943 (Trematoda: Plagiorchiida).

The Brachylaimoidea are digenean parasites of vertebrates, including humans, domestic animals, poultry and wild game. Numerous Brachylaimoidea, particularly adults of Brachylaima and Leucochloridium, are difficult to identify to species. We provide and analyse sequences of two nuclear (18S rDNA, ITS2) and two mitochondrial (CO1, ND1) DNA loci of central European species of the Brachylaimoidea, namely Leucochloridium holostomum, Leucochloridium paradoxum, Leucochloridium perturbatum, Leucochloridium subtilis, Leucochloridium vogtianum, Urotocus rossitensis, Urogonimus macrostomus, Michajlovia m

A Combined Morphometric and Molecular Approach to Identifying Metacercariae of Euclinostomum heterostomum (Digenea: Clinostomidae).

Metacercariae of species of Euclinostomum have been found encysted in kidney, liver, and muscles of several fish species, while adults occur in the mouth, pharynx, larynx, trachea, and upper esophagus of fish-eating birds. The aim of this work was to gather molecular and morphological data from the type species, Euclinostomum heterostomum, as a starting point for needed revisions of the genus. Metacercariae were collected from cichlids in Lake Kinneret, Israel, and all were identified as E. heterostomum based on morphology. This identification was further confirmed by principal components anal

SYBR, TaqMan, or both: highly sensitive, non-invasive detection of Cardicola blood fluke species in Southern Bluefin Tuna (Thunnus maccoyii).

Three species of blood fluke from the genus Cardicola are known to parasitize and cause disease in Bluefin Tunas--C. forsteri, C. orientalis, and C. opisthorchis. Although initially believed to be separated by geography and host specificity, recent identification of at least two Cardicola spp. concurrently present within all three Bluefin species has raised questions concerning pathogenicity, relative abundance, and distribution of these parasites within Bluefin populations. Here, we present sensitive and differential real-time qPCR nucleic acid detection of these Cardicola spp. by targeting t

A new cryptogonimid (Digenea) from the Mayan cichlid, Cichlasoma urophthalmus (Osteichthyes: Cichlidae), in several localities of the Yucatán Peninsula, Mexico.

Oligogonotylus mayae n.sp. is described from the intestine of the Mayan cichlid Cichlasoma urophthalmus (Günther) in Ría Lagartos, Ría Celestún, and Estero Progreso, Yucatán State. This is the second species described for Oligogonotylus Watson, 1976, the other being O.manteri Watson, 1976. The new species is readily distinguished from O. manteri by the anterior extension of the vitelline follicles. In O. Manteri, Vitelline follicles are found entirely in the hindbody, extending posteriorly to mid-testicular level. Vitelline follicles in the new species extend from teh anterior margin of poster

27 kDa Fasciola gigantica glycoprotein for the diagnosis of prepatent fasciolosis in cattle.

An indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) using 27 kDa glycoprotein of Fasciola gigantica has been evaluated for its potential use in the diagnosis of bovine fasciolosis. Following experimental infection of rabbits, F. gigantica infection-induced antibodies were isolated and later used as ligands in affinity chromatography for isolation of infection-induced antibody-specific proteins. Among the five infection-specific proteins isolated, a glycoprotein of 27 kDa was later isolated by second-step purification using concanavalin A matrix. In crossbred cattle receiving different doses

Inflammatory interactions in fish exposed to pollutants and parasites: a role for apoptosis and C reactive protein.

Although previous studies have highlighted the inflammatory responses of fish infected with parasites and exposed to pollutants, very little is known about how these two stressors interact within the fish. In this review, which also contains original data, the effect of these two parameters on the fish inflammatory response is assessed and, in particular, the role of apoptosis and the acute phase protein, C reactive protein, is evaluated. In Cyprinus carpio exposed to 0.5 mg NH4+ l(-1) or 0.1 mg Cd2+ l(-1) and experimentally infected with the blood fluke, Sanguinicola inermis, the pollutant ty

A western blot and ELISA assay for the diagnosis of Taenia solium infection in pigs.

An enzyme-linked immunoelectrotransfer blot (EITB) was developed using soluble Taenia solium metacestode antigen preparation for immunodiagnosis of porcine cysticercosis and compared with an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Sera from 20 pigs with parasitologically confirmed cysticercosis were tested by both EITB and ELISA assays. Specificity of the tests was examined by testing 25 serum samples from the UK, where cysticercosis is not endemic and sera from pigs with Echinococcus granulosus (15), Fasciolopsis buski (six), or Trichinella spiralis (five) infections. Multilocus, morphological, and ecological data reveal the presence of three new species of the genus Neodiplostomum Railliet 1919 (Digenea: Diplostomidae), endoparasites of birds from the Neotropical region of Mexico.

Neodiplostomum Railliet, 1919, is a cosmopolitan genus that parasitises mainly the intestines of birds of prey, and occasionally those of passerines, cuculiforms, and mammals. Adults of three undescribed species of Neodiplostomum were obtained from five bird species from three families (Accipitridae, Cuculidae, and Tyrannidae) in a single locality. Four molecular markers, namely, the small (SSU) and large (LSU) subunits and internal transcribed spacers (ITS1 and ITS2 plus 5.8S) from nuclear ribosomal DNA, and cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (cox 1) from mitochondrial DNA, were sequenced from sp

Complexity in the recognition of species of Hexangium Goto & Ozaki, 1929 (Trematoda: Microscaphidiidae) from Indo-Pacific Siganidae.

Species of Hexangium (Microscaphidiidae) were collected from 12 species of rabbitfishes (Siganidae) from multiple Indo-West Pacific locations: three on the Great Barrier Reef in Queensland, two in south-east Queensland, Ningaloo Reef in Western Australia, New Caledonia and Japan; no specimens were found from Palau or French Polynesia. Parallel molecular (cox1 mtDNA, ITS2 and 28S rDNA) and morphological analyses, together with consideration of host and geographical distribution, lead us to recognise six species. Specimens from Siganus fuscescens (Houttuyn) from Japan are identified as the type

Introduction of Azygia hwangtsiyui (Trematoda: Azygidae) to Japan with its life cycle information.

In Japan, three trematode species of the genus Azygia have been recorded: A. gotoi, A. perryii, and A. rhinogobii. Here, we report the first detection of A. hwangtsiyui in Japan, identified from the introduced snakehead Channa argus. This trematode was previously known only from the snakeheads in mainland China. Between 2015 and 2024, we sampled snakeheads and snails in Japan, collecting adult trematodes and rediae. Adult trematodes were identified morphologically as A. hwangtsiyui, a determination corroborated by molecular analyses of the COI and 28S rDNA regions. Rediae extracted from the sn
