Otoneurological examination in panic disorder and agoraphobia with panic attacks: a pilot study.

A battery of vestibular and audiological tests was administered to eight patients with panic disorder and 13 patients with agoraphobia and panic attacks, all of whom experienced dizziness during their panic attacks. Positional or spontaneous nystagmus was present in 67% of the subjects. Abnormal responses were found in caloric testing (56%), rotational testing (35%), and posturography (32%). Pure tone audiograms were abnormal in 26% of the subjects and acoustic reflexes were abnormal in 44% of the subjects. Six of eight patients tested had an abnormal brainstem auditory evoked potential. The p

Distortion Product Otoacoustic Emissions and Their Suppression as Predictors of Peripheral Auditory Damage in Migraine: A Case-Control Study.

Although several cochleo-vestibular symptoms are commonly associated with migraine, only a limited number of studies have been done in this regard. Some reported abnormalities in audiometry, auditory brainstem response and vestibular tests, considering these manifestations mainly related to central etiology. However, increasing evidence also suggests a peripheral involvement of the inner ear in migraine. The aim of this study was to investigate the peripheral auditory pathway in migraineurs using otoacoustic emissions (OAEs), to detect alteration of cochlear functioning and possible relationsh

Hearing rehabilitation outcomes in cochlear implant recipients with vestibular schwannoma in observation or radiotherapy groups: A systematic review.

Objectives: Vestibular schwannomas (VS) are rare benign tumours of the vestibular nerve that cause hearing loss. Management strategies include watchful waiting, radiotherapy or surgical resection. Historically, the presence of retrocochlear disease has been considered to be a contra-indication to cochlear implantation (CI). The aim of this systematic review is to assess hearing rehabilitation outcomes for CI recipients with VS, either sporadic or associated with neurofibromatosis type 2, whose tumours have been managed with either observation or radiotherapy. Methods: PubMed, Embase, and Cochra

Slc26a4 expression prevents fluctuation of hearing in a mouse model of large vestibular aqueduct syndrome.

SLC26A4 mutations cause fluctuating and progressive hearing loss associated with enlargement of the vestibular aqueduct (EVA). SLC26A4 encodes a transmembrane anion exchanger called pendrin expressed in nonsensory epithelial cells of the lateral wall of cochlea, vestibular organs and endolymphatic sac. We previously described a transgenic mouse model of EVA with doxycycline (dox)-inducible expression of Slc26a4 in which administration of dox from conception to embryonic day 17.5 (DE17.5) resulted in hearing fluctuation between 1 and 3months of age. In the present study, we hypothesized that Sl

Electrophysiological brain stem investigations in idiopathic narcolepsy.

Narcolepsy is associated with various rapid eye movement (REM) sleep abnormalities. Distinct brain stem areas seem to play a prominent role in REM sleep regulation. Recent magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) studies have led to conflicting findings concerning the presence of structural brain stem lesions in patients with idiopathic narcoleptic syndrome. However, multimodal electrophysiological brain stem investigations may reveal functional brain stem abnormalities even in the absence of MRI abnormality. Therefore we investigated brain stem function in 12 idiopathic narcoleptic patients by system

[89Zr]bevacizumab PET/CT imaging of vestibular schwannomas for the prediction of bevacizumab treatment effect in patients with symptomatic NF2-related schwannomatosis: a study protocol for a phase II single centre, prospective, feasibility trial.

INTRODUCTION: Treatment with bevacizumab achieves both tumour stabilisation or regression and preservation or improvement of hearing. However, the efficacy of bevacizumab varies between patients and within patients. Side effects due to bevacizumab treatment are also common. It would be of value to predict therapeutic response prior to initiating therapy to prevent unnecessary exposure in patients unlikely to benefit. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: We aim to recruit 25 patients with NF2-related schwannomatosis (NF2) with bilateral vestibular schwannomas. Patients will receive an intravenous injection o
