Transcriptional responses in a mouse model of silicone wire embolization induced acute retinal artery ischemia and reperfusion.

Acute retinal ischemia and ischemia-reperfusion injury are the primary causes of retinal neural cell death and vision loss in retinal artery occlusion (RAO). The absence of an accurate mouse model for simulating the retinal ischemic process has hindered progress in developing neuroprotective agents for RAO. We developed a unilateral pterygopalatine ophthalmic artery occlusion (UPOAO) mouse model using silicone wire embolization combined with carotid artery ligation. The survival of retinal ganglion cells and visual function were evaluated to determine the duration of ischemia. Immunofluorescen

Safety and Effectiveness of Miltefosine in Post-Kala-Azar Dermal Leishmaniasis: An Observational Study.

BACKGROUND: Post-kala-azar dermal leishmaniasis (PKDL) is a dermal complication of visceral leishmaniasis. Oral miltefosine (MF) is the first-line treatment for PKDL patients in South Asia. This study assessed the safety and effectiveness of MF therapy after 12 months of follow-up to explore more precise data. METHODS: In this observational study, 300 confirmed PKDL patients were enrolled. MF with the usual dose was administered to all patients for 12 weeks and followed up for 1 year. Clinical evolution was recorded systematically by photographs at screening and at 12 weeks, 6 months, and 12

Ocular manifestations of obstructive sleep apnea: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: The association of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) with development of eye diseases is unclear. This current systematic review and meta-analysis attempts to summarize and analyze associations between OSA and ocular disorders in the literature. METHODS: PubMed, EMBASE, Google Scholar, Web Of Science, and Scopus databases were searched from 1901 to July 2022 in accordance with the Preferred Reporting in Systematic Review & Meta-Analysis (PRISMA). Our primary outcome assessed the association between OSA and the odds of developing floppy eyelid syndrome (FES), glaucoma, non-arteritic an

Value of optical coherence tomography measurement of macular thickness and optic disc parameters for glaucoma screening in patients with high myopia.

BACKGROUND: The basic method of glaucoma diagnosis is visual field examination, however, in patients with high myopia, the diagnosis of glaucoma is difficult. AIM: To explore the value of optical coherence tomography (OCT) for measuring optic disc parameters and macular thickness as a screening tool for glaucoma in patients with high myopia. METHODS: Visual values (contrast sensitivity, color vision, and best-corrected visual acuity) in three groups, patients with high myopia in Group A, patients with high myopia and glaucoma in Group B, and patients with high myopia suspicious for glaucoma

Clinical and genetic characterization of a large cohort of Chinese patients with Bietti crystalline retinopathy.

PURPOSE: To investigate the clinical and genetic characteristics for a large cohort of Chinese patients with Bietti crystalline retinopathy (BCR). METHODS: A total of 208 Chinese BCR patients from 175 families were recruited. Comprehensive clinical evaluations and genetic analysis were performed. Genotype-phenotype correlations were evaluated through statistical analysis. RESULTS: The patients' median age was 37 years (range, 20-76 years). The median best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) was 0.8 LogMAR unit (range, 2.8 to -0.12). A significant decline of BCVA was revealed in patients over 40 y

Objective: This article aims to describe a unique case of didanosine-induced retinal degeneration that was discovered 11 years after the drug withdrawal. Case report: The patient is a 42-year-old woman with a medical history of HIV and hepatitis C virus since 2004. She has been prescribed antiretroviral therapy since then. For the first seven years (2004-2011), the patient was prescribed a combination therapy consisting of didanosine, efavirenz, and lamivudine. The protocol was changed to atripla (efavirenz, emtricitabine, and tenofovir) from 2011 to 2021. Recently (October 2021-January 2021),

Prevalence, Associated Factors and Health-related Quality of Life of Dual Sensory Impairment in Residential Care Facilities in Singapore.

PURPOSE: To investigate the prevalence of dual sensory impairment (DSI), its associated factors and relationship with health-related quality of life (HR-QoL) in residential care facilities (RCF) in Singapore. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study of 123 residents aged ≥40 years from six RCFs, conducted between 2016 and 2018. DSI was defined as concomitant presenting visual acuity (better-eye) >0.3 logarithm of the minimum angle of resolution and a pure-tone air conduction threshold (better-ear) >40 dB HL in any of the four tested frequencies (500, 1000, 2000 and 4000 Hz). Visual rehabilitation of patients with corneal diseases.

BACKGROUND: Although most patients with visual impairment due to corneal diseases can be treated successfully with surgery, some require visual rehabilitation to restore reading ability. To evaluate the best LVAs especially in terms of reading speed and characterize this specific patient group we performed a prospective, randomized cross-over trial. METHODS: All 34 patients underwent a detailed examination (slit-lamp, funduscopy, SD-OCT, ETDRS) as screening. Only patients with corneal diseases without other ocular diseases were included. Reading-speed was assessed with International-Reading-S

Olfactory groove and tuberculum sellae meningioma resection by endoscopic endonasal approach versus transcranial approach: A systematic review and meta-analysis of comparative studies.

Intracranial meningiomas such as olfactory groove meningioma (OGM) and tuberculum sellae meningioma (TSM) arising at the anterior skull base are amenable to surgical resection. Traditionally, this has been achieved by transcranial approaches (TCAs), however, there has been an evolution in an endoscopic endonasal approach (EEA) within recent years. The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to determine if the EEA was superior to the TCA in managing these anterior skull base meningioma based on comparative studies only, and highlight the limitations of the current literature. Non-mydriatic ultrawide field scanning laser ophthalmoscopy compared with dilated fundal examination for assessment of diabetic retinopathy and diabetic macular oedema in Chinese individuals with diabetes mellitus.

AIMS: To evaluate the performance of ultrawide field scanning laser ophthalmoscopy (UWF-SLO) for assessing diabetic retinopathy (DR) and diabetic macular oedema (DME) in a Chinese population, compared with clinical examination. METHODS: This is a retrospective cohort study. A series of 322 eyes from 164 patients with DM were included. Each patient underwent both dilated fundal examination with DR and DME grading by retina specialist and non-mydriatic 200° UWF-SLO (Daytona, Optos, Dunfermline, UK). The severity of DR and DME from UWF-SLO images was further graded by ophthalmologists, according

PURPOSE: To evaluate the clinical validity of the Rabin cone contrast test (RCCT; Innova Systems, Inc.) in patients with normal phakic/pseudophakic eyes and severe dichromatic colour vision deficiency (CVD). METHODS: We evaluated age-related changes in the RCCT scores in 166 phakic eyes and 34 pseudophakic eyes and the RCCT sensitivity and specificity in 28 men with severe dichromatic CVD (10 with protanopia, 18 with deutanopia) and nine age-matched controls.
