Cutaneous adverse drug reactions are frequent, affecting 2-3% of hospitalized patients and in one twentieth of them are potentially life-threatening. We report a neonate with angio-oedema following fetal hydrops caused by maternal parvovirus B19 infection. Levels of complement components, including total haemolytic complement activity and C1 inhibitor concentration, were within normal ranges in cord blood. Neonatal angio-oedema might be included in the clinical spectrum of parvovirus B19 infection in pregnancy.

Four attacks of mucosal angioneurotic oedema occurred in a 57-year-old woman, requiring tracheotomy for one episode. Decreased or non-measurable levels of complement components C1q, C-1-INH and C4 pointed to a complement consumption. The basic disease was a pleomorphic immunocytoma with the production of monoclonal IgM. Treatment with danazol, 600 mg daily, raised the serum level of C-1-INH, but not of C4.

Several gastrointestinal diseases and symptoms have been attributed to food intolerance, but in only a few cases has the participation of immune mechanisms been confirmed. Acute or chronic gastroenteritis is commonly due to allergic reactions to food proteins, inflammatory diseases and infections, or the presence of immunological defects may induce secondarily a food allergic disorder. This review will focus on the immunopathogenetical importance of the mucosal and systemic defenses, and the absorption of food proteins by the gut.
