Rice is one of the most important staple crops worldwide. However, the bacterial blight of rice caused by Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae (Xoo) poses a major threat to the production of rice. In this study, we isolated and identified the strain Pseudomonas aeruginosa SF416, which exhibited significant antagonistic activity against Xoo, from a soil sample collected in a winter wheat field in Shannanzhalang County, Tibet, China. The bacterial solution (BS) and cell-free supernatant (CFS) of SF416 had significant prevention effects for the bacterial blight of rice, with an efficacy of 45.1% and 34.

A variety of essential oils and edible compounds have been widely recognized for their antifungal activity in recent years. In this study, we explored the antifungal activity of estragole from Pimenta racemosa against Aspergillus flavus and investigated the underlying mechanism of action. The results showed that estragole had significant antifungal activity against A. flavus, with a minimum inhibitory concentration of 0.5 μL/mL against spore germination. Additionally, estragole inhibited the biosynthesis of aflatoxin in a dose-dependent manner, and aflatoxin biosynthesis was significantly inhi

Plant diseases caused by phytopathogens result in huge economic losses in agriculture. In addition, the use of chemical products to control such diseases causes many problems to the environment and to human health. However, some bacteria and fungi have a mutualistic relationship with plants in nature, mainly exchanging nutrients and protection. Thus, exploring those beneficial microorganisms has been an interesting and promising alternative for mitigating the use of agrochemicals and, consequently, achieving a more sustainable agriculture. Microorganisms are able to produce and excrete several

Food safety is a rising challenge worldwide due to the expanding population and the need to produce food to feed the growing population. At the same time, pesticide residues found in high concentrations in fresh agriculture pose a significant threat to food safety. Presently, crop output is being increased by applying herbicides, fungicides, insecticides, pesticides, fertilizers, nematicides, and soil amendments. A combination of factors, including bioaccumulation, widespread usage, selective toxicity, and stability, make pesticides among the most toxic compounds polluting the environment. The

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The use of woody crops for Quad-level (approx. 1 × 1018 J) energy production will require marginal agricultural lands that experience recurrent periods of water stress. Populus species have the capacity to increase dehydration tolerance by lowering osmotic potential via osmotic adjustment. The aim of this study was to investigate how the inherent genetic potential of a Populus clone to respond to drought interacts with the nature of the drought to determine the degree of biochemical response.
METHODS: A greenhouse drought stress study was conducted on Populus deltoides 'W

A study was conducted over 2 years to determine whether growth under elevated CO(2) (700 μmol mol(-1) ) and temperature (ambient + 4 °C) conditions modifies photochemical efficiency or only the use of electron transport products in spring wheat grown in field chambers. Elevated atmospheric CO(2) concentrations increased crop dry matter at maturity by 12-17%, while above-ambient temperatures did not significantly affect dry matter yield. In measurements with ambient CO(2) at ear emergence and after anthesis, growth at elevated CO(2) concentrations decreased flag leaf light-saturated carbon assi

Rice is one of the world's most critical crops, serving as a staple food for more than half of the global population and playing a vital role in global food security. However, rice production is frequently threatened by diseases such as brown spot and sheath blight, which can significantly reduce yields and impact food availability. Currently, these diseases are often managed using synthetic fertilizers and fungicides, which, while effective, pose serious environmental risks due to their indiscriminate use. The reliance on these chemicals not only harms ecosystems but also contributes to soil

Efficient nitrogen (N) management in calcareous soils remains challenging due to limited nutrient availability, poor synchronization between N supply and crop demand, and low fertilizer use efficiency. While black soldier fly frass (BSFF) represents an emerging organic amendment, its comparative effects relative to vermicompost (VC) and mineral N fertilizers under calcareous soil conditions remain insufficiently understood. In this study, we evaluated the effects of BSFF- and VC-based integrated organic-mineral fertilization strategies involving urea (U) and ammonium sulfate (AS) on maize prod

Soil degradation and nutrient depletion are major constraints in arid regions, particularly in fragile oasis ecosystems. Harnessing beneficial plant-bacteria interactions offers a sustainable approach to improving soil fertility and crop productivity. This study aimed to isolate and characterize plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) from root nodules of V. faba L. var. minor Saber 02 grown on 12 oasis soils, and to evaluate their potential for enhancing plant growth and soil fertility. Sixty bacteria were isolated from V. faba root-nodules. 16S rDNA sequencing revealed seven bacterial or

Although India leads global food legume production, productivity remains low largely due to viral diseases. Despite the known diversity of legume-infecting viruses, comprehensive studies integrating disease incidence, severity, virome composition, co-infection dynamics, and spatial genetic variability across major pulse-growing regions of northern and central India remain limited. To address these gaps, the present study employed an integrated approach involving field surveys across 117 pulse fields in six Indian states, high-throughput sequencing, RT-PCR validation, phylogeny and MAPI-based g

Many important plant diseases are caused by airborne spores. This review explains the aerobiology of plant pathogens, sampling methods for collection of airborne spores, merits of different post-capture diagnostic methods (microscopy, immunology and DNA-based diagnostics) and non-capture (optical or imaging) methods to classify airborne particles. Different sampling, downstream processing and diagnostic methods can affect the efficiency of detection of certain species due to differences in traits such as spore size, adhesive surfaces, electrostatic charge, hydrophobicity, physical toughness an

During the last two decades, a number of research outcomes have vetted possible plant responses to elevated CO2 (eCO2) and other climate stressors in temperate trees and agricultural crops. However, such climate change repercussions (elevated CO2, O3, temperature, and drought) on tropical trees, especially on dominant trees of the Indian subcontinent, remain largely unexplored. This study investigates the productivity of selected species (Pongamia pinnata, Ficus benghalensis, Azadirachta indica, and Syzygium cumini) under three experimental settings, 1) Combined Stress Condition (SC) - Carbon

Microbial biotechnology employs techniques that rely on the natural interactions that occur in ecosystems. Bacteria, including rhizobacteria, play an important role in plant growth, providing crops with an alternative that can mitigate the negative effects of abiotic stress, such as those caused by saline environments, and increase the excessive use of chemical fertilizers. The present study examined the promoting potential of bacterial isolates obtained from the rhizospheric soil and roots of the Asparagus officinalis cultivar UF-157 F2 in Viru, la Libertad, Peru. This region has high soil sa

Environmental stress triggers a dual response in medicinal plants by inhibiting growth while enhancing secondary metabolite production. However, the regulatory mechanism of this trade-off remains unclear. Here, we identified SbBZR1 as a brassinosteroid (BR)-responsive transcription factor that orchestrates drought resilience and baicalin biosynthesis in Scutellaria baicalensis through integrated multi-omics and metabolic flux analysis. In general, drought stress upregulated BR signaling and SbBZR1 expression. Transgenic Arabidopsis expressing SbBZR1 and its hyperactive mutant (Sbbzr1-1D) exhib

Acrylamide forms from free asparagine and reducing sugars during frying, baking, roasting, or high-temperature processing, and cereal products are major contributors to dietary acrylamide intake. Free asparagine concentration is the determining factor for acrylamide-forming potential in cereals, and this study investigated the effect of fungicide application on free asparagine accumulation in wheat grain. Free amino acid concentrations were measured in flour from 47 varieties of wheat grown in a field trial in 2011-2012. The wheat had been supplied with nitrogen and sulfur and treated with gro
