Assessing the frequency of adverse reactions induced by melanin-containing formulations used for the management of solar dermatitis.

BACKGROUND: Melanin from different sources is widely used by many manufacturers to produce cosmetics and sunscreens. Research data show a wide spectrum of biological activities of melanin including the protection against UV radiation and oxidants. According to the research evidence, the topical use of melanin is more effective against inflammation than the hydrocortisone. The most common side effects of topical melanin ointment are local itching, burning, and moderate hyperemia. AIM OF THE STUDY: The purpose of this work is to describe the adverse outcomes of melanin-containing formulas in pa

Opioid use disorder in adult burn patients: Implications for future mental health, behavioral and substance use patterns.

BACKGROUND: Burn patients continue to have a high opioid requirement, despite current national trends to decrease opioid prescribing. While effective, long-term opioid use results in opioid dependence and possibly other mental health comorbidities. This retrospective cohort study seeks to evaluate implications of diagnosed opioid use disorder in the development of subsequent psychiatric, behavioral and substance abuse patterns. METHODS: The TriNetX database was queried for patients 18 years and older with a diagnosis of thermal or chemical burn who developed opioid use disorder after their bu

Estimating dermal contact soil exposure for amphibians.

Chemical exposure estimation through the dermal route is an underemphasized area of ecological risk assessment for terrestrial animals. Currently, there are efforts to create exposure models to estimate doses from this pathway for use in ecological risk assessment. One significant limitation has been insufficient published data to characterize exposure and to support the selection and parameterization of appropriate models, particularly for amphibians in terrestrial habitats. Recent publications measuring pesticide doses to terrestrial-phase amphibians have begun to rectify this situation. We

Associations of early childhood medication exposure and molar incisor hypomineralization (MIH): A routine data analysis.

OBJECTIVES: Molar incisor hypomineralization (MIH) has become a major oral health problem of widely unknown origin. Besides genetic predisposition, exposure to certain drugs in early childhood are suspected to be associated with MIH. Aim of this routine data analysis was to examine associations of MIH and exposure to medication as well as perinatal factors. METHODS: Individuals with MIH were identified in claims data using a validated predefined specific treatment pattern. The database was a comprehensive routine data set of a major national health insurance company (BARMER, Germany). Based o

A critical analysis of research methods and experimental models to study pulpitis.

Pulpitis is the inflammatory response of the dental pulp to a tooth insult, whether it is microbial, chemical, or physical in origin. It is traditionally referred to as reversible or irreversible, a classification for therapeutic purposes that determines the capability of the pulp to heal. Recently, new knowledge about dental pulp physiopathology led to orientate therapeutics towards more frequent preservation of pulp vitality. However, full adoption of these vital pulp therapies by dental practitioners will be achieved only following better understanding of cell and tissue mechanisms involved

Environmental exposures and breast cancer risk in the context of underlying susceptibility: A systematic review of the epidemiological literature.

BACKGROUND: The evidence evaluating environmental chemical exposures (ECE) and breast cancer (BC) risk is heterogeneous which may stem in part as few studies measure ECE during key BC windows of susceptibility (WOS). Another possibility may be that most BC studies are skewed towards individuals at average risk, which may limit the ability to detect signals from ECE. OBJECTIVES: We reviewed the literature on ECE and BC focusing on three types of studies or subgroup analyses based on higher absolute BC risk: BC family history (Type 1); early onset BC (Type 2); and/or genetic susceptibility (Typ

Detection of Dengue Virus-Specific IgM and IgG Antibodies through Peptide Sequences of Envelope and NS1 Proteins for Serological Identification.

Dengue is an acute febrile illness caused by positive-sense single-stranded RNA virus, belonging to the family Flaviviridae and genus Flavivirus. Transmission of virus among the individuals occurred by blood-feeding Aedes mosquitoes. This virus has four serotypes differentiated on the basis of antibody neutralization assay. At present, there is no particular treatment or vaccine candidate available for dengue infection. Approximately 3.9 billion human populations are at risk of dengue virus (DENV) infection. Thus, precise diagnosis of dengue at the early stage is very essential for disease con

Identification of novel growth phase- and media-dependent small non-coding RNAs in Streptococcus pyogenes M49 using intergenic tiling arrays.

BACKGROUND: Small non-coding RNAs (sRNAs) have attracted attention as a new class of gene regulators in both eukaryotes and bacteria. Genome-wide screening methods have been successfully applied in Gram-negative bacteria to identify sRNA regulators. Many sRNAs are well characterized, including their target mRNAs and mode of action. In comparison, little is known about sRNAs in Gram-positive pathogens. In this study, we identified novel sRNAs in the exclusively human pathogen Streptococcus pyogenes M49 (Group A Streptococcus, GAS M49), employing a whole genome intergenic tiling array approach.

Exposure to benzene and non-Hodgkin lymphoma, an epidemiologic overview and an ongoing case-control study in Shanghai.

The interest in the relationship between benzene exposure and non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) appears to have been generated from a 1979 publication, which reported an increased risk of NHL among persons potentially exposed to benzene and/or coal tar fractions. More recently (1997), an increased risk of NHL was reported among 74,828 workers exposed to benzene and other chemicals in a variety of industries in China. On the contrary, no increased risk of NHL was reported in a cohort of 1,165 workers at two rubber hydrochloride plants in Ohio (US), who were exposed to extremely high levels of benzene
