[Postpartum psychiatry].

The four important syndromes that constitute postnatal psychiatry are chronologically: 1) Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), 2) Baby-blues, 3) Puerperal psychosis and 4) Postnatal depression. The PTSD (prevalence 1%) occurs from 24 to 48 hours after a difficult childbirth. Anxiety predominates in association with nightmares and recurrent images of the experience. Baby-blues (prevalence 80%) is a feeling of sadness that doesn't need to be treated. It occurs around the third day of post-partum. Its intensity is a predictive factor of postnatal depression. Puerperal psychosis (prevalence 0.2%

A longitudinal study of the subjective birth experience and the relationship to mental health.

BACKGROUND: A satisfying birth experience has positive effects on the well-being of mother and child. The birth experience depends on subjective expectations and objective birth parameters, and the view of birth can also change over time. However, it is still unclear how birth anxiety and mode of birth affect the different dimensions of the birth experience in the first months after childbirth. METHODS: In this prospective longitudinal study, 307 first-time mothers, planning to give birth vaginally, were assessed for fear of childbirth at approximately 34 weeks of gestation and for obstetric

Opioid Use Disorder Treatment Facilities With Programs for Special Populations.

INTRODUCTION: Special populations, including veterans, pregnant and postpartum women, and adolescents, benefit from opioid use disorder treatment tailored to their specific needs, but access to such services is poorly described. This study identifies the availability of opioid use disorder treatment facilities that use medications and have special programming and contextualizes facilities amid counties' opioid-related overdose mortality. METHODS: Data were compiled on 15,945 U.S. treatment facilities using medications for opioid use disorder listed in the Behavioral Health Services Treatment

Positive predictors of quality of life for postpartum mothers with a history of childhood maltreatment.

The postpartum period brings a host of biopsychosocial, familial, and economic changes, which may be challenging for new mothers, especially those with trauma histories. Trauma-exposed women are at heightened risk for psychiatric symptomatology and reduced quality of life. The current study sought to evaluate whether a set of hypothesized promotive factors assessed during the first 18 months postpartum (positive parenting, family cohesion, and maternal resilience) are associated with life satisfaction in this population, after controlling for income and postpartum psychiatric symptoms. Analyse

Postpartum anaemia. Are we vigilant enough?

Anaemia in the immediate postnatal period can manifest itself physically in a number of ways. Amongst these are pallor, tiredness, dizziness, loss of appetite and oedema (Bewley 2004), all of which could be mistaken for commonly observed benign symptoms of the immediate postnatal period. However, left untreated, anaemia can severely impact on both the physical and emotional wellbeing of a woman and dramatically slow down her recovery (Bewley 2004). This altered state of health can also have a detrimental effect on a woman's ability to bond with her new child (Abbott et al 1997) and has been id

Post-dural puncture headache diagnosis and management.

Epidural analgesia, commonly used to alleviate labor pain, is not without complication. The most common complication associated with labor epidural analgesia (LEA) is Unintentional Dural Puncture (UDP), where many professionals go on to develop a Post Dural Puncture Headache (PDPH). Spinal anesthesia can also result in PDPH. Other complications of dural puncture necessitating further treatment include hospital readmission, persistent headache, persistent backache, cerebral venous thrombosis, subdural hematoma, postpartum depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, and decreased maternal breast

An update comprehensive review on the effects of transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation for postnatal physical and psychological disorders.

Postnatal rehabilitation is crucial to women's physical and mental health, not only to the quality of life of the mother herself, but also to the well-being of the whole family. Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS) has been gradually attracting attention as an emerging means of postnatal rehabilitation. We summarized the current evidence related to this topic by a comprehensive review. Relevant studies demonstrated that TENS is effective for treating postnatal rehabilitation. TENS showed a good analgesia without any severe adverse effects with a frequency of 100 Hz with a pulse d

Development and psychometric validation of the Pandemic-Related Traumatic Stress Scale for children and adults.

To assess the public health impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on mental health, investigators from the National Institutes of Health Environmental influences on Child Health Outcomes (ECHO) research program developed the Pandemic-Related Traumatic Stress Scale (PTSS). Based on the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th Edition (DSM-5) acute stress disorder symptom criteria, the PTSS is designed for adolescent (13-21 years) and adult self-report and caregiver-report on 3-12-year-olds. To evaluate psychometric properties, we used PTSS data collected between April 2020 and Augus

Catatonia in the peripartum: A cohort study using electronic health records.

BACKGROUND: Due to limited existing literature available on the presentation and treatment of catatonia in the peripartum, this retrospective descriptive cohort study aimed to examine demographic data, catatonic features, diagnoses pre- and post-catatonic episodes, treatment and the presence of obstetric complications. METHODS: Individuals with catatonia were identified in a previous study using anonymised electronic healthcare records from a large mental health trust in South-East London. The presence of features from the Bush-Francis Catatonia Screening Instrument was coded by the investiga

Large retroperitoneal hematoma following vaginal delivery: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Retroperitoneal hematoma after vaginal delivery is rare but can lead to maternal morbidity and mortality. Diagnosis of this condition is challenging due to its complexity and its nonspecific signs and symptoms. To date, studies and case reports regarding retroperitoneal hematoma are few, particularly in low-income countries where risk factors for this condition may be more prevalent and the prognosis poorer. CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 37-year-old multiparous african (Congolese) woman who presented to the emergency department of a large referral hospital in Bukavu,

Bibliometric Analysis on of the Impact of Screening to Minimize Maternal Mental Health on Neonatal Outcomes: A Systematic Review.

(1) Background: Prenatal depression, maternal anxiety, puerperal psychosis, and suicidal thoughts affect child welfare and development and maternal health and mortality. Women in low-income countries suffer maternal mental health issues in 25% of cases during pregnancy and 20% of cases thereafter. However, MMH screening, diagnosis, and reporting are lacking. The primary goals of the present study are twofold, as follows: firstly, to evaluate the importance of screening maternal mental health to alleviate perinatal depression and maternal anxiety, and, secondly, to analyze research patterns and

Changes in psychopathological symptoms during pregnancy and after delivery: A prospective-longitudinal study in women with and without anxiety and depressive disorders prior to pregnancy.

BACKGROUND: The role of anxiety and depressive disorders prior to pregnancy for changes in peripartum psychopathological symptoms has not been resolved yet. METHODS: A regional-epidemiological sample of 306 women was prospectively followed in seven waves from early pregnancy until 16 months postpartum. Lifetime DSM-IV anxiety and depressive disorders were assessed at baseline with the CIDI-V. Psychopathological symptoms (somatization, obsession-compulsion, interpersonal sensitivity, depression, anxiety, hostility, phobic anxiety, paranoid ideation, and psychoticism) were measured with the BSI

Maternal mental health mediates the effect of prenatal stress on infant temperament: The Harvey Mom Study.

Prenatal maternal stress and mental health problems are known to increase risk for developmental psychopathology in offspring, yet pathways leading to risk or resiliency are poorly understood. In a quasi-experimental design, we prospectively examined associations between disaster-related prenatal stress, maternal mental health symptoms, and infant temperament outcomes. Mothers who were pregnant during Hurricane Harvey (N = 527) reported on objective hardships (e.g., loss of belongings or income, evacuation, home flooding) related to the storm and subsequent mental health symptoms (anxiety/depr

Antenatal and postnatal psychopathology among women with current and past eating disorders: longitudinal patterns.

This study aims to investigate longitudinal patterns of psychopathology during the antenatal and postnatal periods among women with current (C-ED) and past (P-ED) eating disorders. Women were recruited to a prospective longitudinal study: C-ED (n = 31), P-ED (n = 29) and healthy control (HC; n = 57). Anxiety, depression and ED symptoms were measured at four time points: first/second trimester, third trimester, 8 weeks and 6 months postpartum. Linear mixed effects models were used to test for group differences. Women with C-ED and P-ED, in all diagnostic categories, had significantly higher lev

Mood disorders: review of current diagnostic systems.

In their sections on mood disorders, both ICD-10 and DSM-IV represent considerable advances on ICD-9 in drawing affective disorders together in one section, distinguishing bipolar disorder from unipolar, including dysthymia and using clear definitions. Problems with ICD-10 include complexity, use of different clinical and research definitions, emphasis on single versus recurrent episodes and the lack of some clinically useful subtypes. DSM-IV is less complex but assigns separate unjustified categories of medical and substance-induced mood disorders, and fails to code its useful qualifiers. Bot
